Hey tedi,
Thanks for bringing over the two Greg Bennetts last Saturday night.
What a treat! I must confess I was looking forward to hearing the Royale (RL-1) more than the Ultramatic since it was a semi-hollow.
I tried the RL-1 first, then the UM-1 much later. After playing the UM-1, I must say that I loved it more than the RL. There's something about the Ultramatic's neck/fingerboard that lends itself to effortless playing.
Playing the RL-1 was a bit more of a struggle, maybe because of the low fretwires.
But back to the UM-1 .. Most of the time, I just played using the neck pickup, and even on relatively low levels (3-4), you can get a very warm, jazz tone.
What I also noticed that these pickups seem to have a slightly hotter output compared to my guitar. I'm figuring the neck pickup output alone should have a DC resistance reading of more than 10k. But that's just a wild guess. I would've loved to toy around with the bridge pickup, but wasn't able to do so coz of time constraints.
I'm imagining how the UM-1 would sound like with the guitar volume at full bore, blasting through an overdrive pedal through a good tube amp ..
If I may add, I'm not that surprised to hear how good the Ultramatic sounded, as I already had previous experience with another friend's Ultramatic 3 - which I immediately fell in love with the first time I heard it.
It's good to know how Greg Bennetts seem to have that same tonal consistency and superb craftsmanship.
You know how it feels when you play a guitar the first time and everything just 'feels right?' ...
No amount of intensive scrutiny or analysis needed to justify it.
The Ultramatic is one such guitar - for me at least. And best of all, it comes at an incredibly great bargain ..
Can't wait to get one, and try the higher models in the near future.
So, with such amazing features, you can have your cake and eat it too. Best of all, you don't even have to 'bake' it ..
