Sige I'll also ask on the pinoyjazz list. Mabuhay ang pogi jazz fans!   lol!I have the last Benson/Jarreau album and it gets heavy play on my iPod. I'm surprised they even had a version of Miles Davis' "Tutu".

Somebody from Evosound.com saw this thread and will send me a review copy of a Benson Live DVD. Life is goooode!

but the moment he sings "in your eyes"  I'm off to the bat cave & take a leek... lol.

I noticed that too. Think he's gay, just look at his poses in his albums...

gay or no gay, I'm gonna watch him do his chops...

A great musician is a great musician! walang discrimination pag dating sa musika! I heard Bill Stewart is gay, that doesn't make him less great.

Nagpa-nose job at botox si GB pero what we dig is his music not his looks.

Last time nandito siya, kinanta niya ang In Your Eyes. At saka di pogi jazz ang "In Your Eyes".  Pop yun.  It was never considered as a jazz ditty just like some of Benson's materials like "Give Me The Night".

Lalo na't nasa jazz and blues forum tayo.

Kita tayo sa September 8. Mag-iipon pa ako ng perang pambili ng ticket.  Peace!

Teka lang - if GB is gay, does it mean that it makes his music gay?
YMCA?

Hehe, just kidding.  :-D I'm getting the closest seats I can to see him live; nothing beats a live concert. Grabe, sobrang excited na ako, I hope he does his monster licks. Yung mamaw talaga. Tingin ko, tutunganga lang ako the entire time.  :-D

Hehe, I thought walang magrereact. :)

In fact, there are a lot of them that I totally respect, like GB and Earl Klugh, Al Jarreau rin. Mga idol. If ever some of you have heard them do traditional jazz, grabe rin talaga.

Maganda rin yung Living Inside Your Love pati This Masquerade, LSS ko ngayon after listening to my dad's pop/pop-jazz CD's (Benson's Collection). :)

8-) he he.. I got into trouble in pinoyjazz e-group because of this. dami kasi nanlalait dun sa smooth o "pogi" jazz. Sabi ko "the people who play this kind of music may even be better players than most of you" and I got flamed. I was not trying to put them down, just trying to tell them to refrain from criticizing people who are doing something about their music. Si Johnny Alegre, post lang ng post ng kanyang mga gigs dun sa e-group, oblivious to the fact that meron syang  detractors. Yun ang ok, parang Nike - "just do it".

BTW, there's this Benson album I like -yung In Flight which includes Gonna Love you More..  will definitely show up in the concert, di ko pa lang alam kung anong tickets afford ko, even though I'm not a guitarist.

Definitely George Benson has chops - I have a copy of Breezin' (the quintessential pogi jazz classic circa 1976) ripped off from vinyl burned on an mp3 that just stays in my car. I love the chops, and even the pretty syrupy strings mixed in by producer Tommy Lipuma. This is an album where you can sing the solos and get off on it. My favorite track is "Affirmation".

I also still enjoy the live album "Weekend in L.A." with "On Broadway" (popularized in the film All That Jazz) and the tribute to Wes Montomery "I Remember Wes".

Pogi Jazz is definitely of a certain time andplace, the "poginess" is apparent, but still quite enjoyable when appreciated for what it is.

Even Parker recorded with strings.

Kahit pa gusto niya ako ch___in, ok lang, papayag ako. Idol talaga si idol, eh.

Ok lang kung closet badaf si Benson, that's his business. One of the greatest jazz vibes players of all time, Gary Burton is openly gay.

I'm just curious, what's wrong with Kenny G? I know he's a little bit cheesy in his lines, at least that's what I think. But I don't really understand why the Jazz community don't like him. I've always wondered.

For me, I hate his floaty rhythmic feel, eeewww

By the way, lines are just lines. I don’t think there’s any cheesy lines, it all depends on how a player plays it. Take any lines that you think is cheesy and let Miles Davis play it, I’m sure it’ll still sound amazing.

... must be the way Kenny G. makes pop sound jazz? makes jazz sound pop? make pop-jazz sound jazz-pop? he he I don't know but it doesn't sound jazz. Let's ask Pat M, he says Kenny G is always out of tune.

Kenny is worth another thread, why don't you start one, let's keep this one fixated on Benson and Jarreau.

I posted a new thread. (By the way I think the site is not working on Mozilla properly, I can't see my previous posts.)

Anyway, GB is really famous for his pop-jazz no? My sister's friend joined our family for dinner and we discussed the GB concert - tapos she was shocked to know that GB was going here and wanted to watch. When I asked her what songs she knew - she only knew the ones like In your Eyes and Moody's mood. She doesn't even know that he's a great guitarist.

Al Jarreau on the other hand, sabi niya, "todong juma-jazz talaga yun di 'ba?" And then she hummed Spain.

I guess GB's jazz guitar side isn't really famous kahit na sikat siya sa "pop-world" (of course this is for non-musicians.)

Wait, is take five included in their album?

It's not Mozilla, there is some DB glitch going on that erased some recent posts. I don't know what caused it, will take a look when I get back from work.

Georgie is a legitimate pop artist (greatest love of all, etc) - you can't take that out of his career. But he was a jazz guitar monster for years, look out for his old CTI recordings.

No Take Five on the new album... funny both Jarreau and Benson have recorded their own "takes" on this 5/4 classic.

I am guessing that the concert will take the cue from their joint album, with a sprinkling of past "hits". It will be jazz and pop-jazz (i.e. they covered Seals and Croft's Summer Breeze for example), not too heavy, programmed for the Smooth jazz crowd. But you never know what happens in a live situation, eh.

I hope they do take five. I've watched some GB's take five videos in YouTube - grabe talaga, mamaw.

Sana, sana, magmonster sila ng live. :)

Private joke lang namin yun kc at that time puro bop, swing at mainstream lang pinapakingan namin... "Purist" kami noon (maaring hangang ngayon), but we do not discriminate pop jazz, pogi jazz or whatever you may wanna call it...

Last time nandito siya, kinanta niya ang In Your Eyes. [/color]   Talaga?

It's not about the dough dude. Even if we don't become Rock Stars or Jazz Greats, it's touching people's lives through our music. That's what really matters. My apologies. It wasn't MikeStern who was playing rhythm guitar for Benson at FAT.It was Pat Kelly. I'm sure kilalamo rin siya.

Was trying to make the correction earlier pero nagkaka glitch sa site.

I actually remember Mar mentioning that term many years ago during Side A's debut recording.  I also remember Mar jamming in the studio with JQ, Rudy Lozano, and Bobby Taylo - dishing out a real pogi version of Early AM Attitude.

Ako, I'm just an old man trying to play music with a band for fun. Nagkataonkasing panahon ni Brother Wayne ang kinalakihan namin, so it's the type of music  that we enjoy playing. :-)

I guess we're on the same page when you mentioned you respect every type of music and genre.  Siguro I can only suggest na you go a little easy on Kenny G.  I don't like his Silhoette typesongs but I did enjoy his playing with the Jeff Lorber Fusion Band.

ke pogi jazz, ke straight jazz, ke bebop, swing, Bigband, mainstream, cool, or electronic jazz... OK lahat yan!
