From a cheapskate producer's point of view:
There are two contrasting views here:
1. SERVE THE SONG TO THE FULLEST
2. EXPRESS YOURSELF TO THE FULLEST
One of my major problems as a young recordist and producer is how to strike a balance between both paradigms. Everyone wants to sound unique. That is why we have our own tonal and technical biases (and frankly, a lot tend to work around their technical and gear limitations more).
I guess, the biggest challenge to everyone is... make a solo that sticks in your head. And speed is not a necessity in this equation.
Ever wondered why Hotel California still reigns as the #1 guitar solo of all time?
Why can't Rusty Cooley get close to #561?
Again, it's all about tastefulness, and how you cut a solo in a song's context. It's not easy people. It's either people stay in their comfort zone too much, or are plainly limited because of studio time limitations. Let alone the tone.
To answer your question, I absolutely hate Dead Nails' solo on "O Nanay ko".
