I think that goes more under parody rather than similar riff - or do we define similar riffs to also apply to parody/cover songs?

I think parody does not apply here bro.  Was just joking  :-D

ah! sorry, I tend to be too serious at times, my apologies. but it's interesting, the concept of similar riffs - what if it's a parody song that is only meant to sound like someone else, but is not a actually a a song given new lyrics or arrangements? LOL. what I can think of now that would be something like this is the Itchyworms song or song snippet that intentionally sounds like April Boy, or a lot of the new "manila sound" bands.

That one Radioactive Sago Project song (Huwag Kang Maingay...) sure sounds like they nicked The White Stripes's Seven Nation Army.

walang naglagay nung sa valley of chrome na "forever young"? same intro ng bad religion's "american jesus" pero parang iba naman yung chords sa buong kanta. pati yung kay kitchie nadal na "same ground" same riff nung kay alanis morisette na "you learn"

Cueshe's Stay and Sorry (?), Cueshe's Borrowed Time and their single before it, Radioactive Sago Project's Astro and Alcohol, most of Kamikazee's songs, Creed's songs and Alterbridge's first single (they changed the name but played the same riffs), and all the amazing D-A-Bm-G songs.

the breakdown drum and bass part of Wolfgang's "Halik ni Hudas" is almost a carbon copy of the opening riff of Megadeth's "Peace Sells But Who's Buying"

Speaking of which, yung drum fill na ginamit ni Matt Sorum sa Use Your Illusion, puro pareho.  Yun bang (in drum-speak) "3 + 4 e +".  Pakinggan nyo ang November Rain, Yesterdays, etc.  You'll get my drift if you listen carefully.

I remember someone taking out that familiar fill and editing each instance it was used into one mp3 file.  Hilarious.

Hmm, totoo kaya ito?

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?Mode=Archive&Date=11/13/2004

Georgia rockers COLLECTIVE SOUL appear to have "borrowed" a riff from METALLICA's "King Nothing" for their latest single, "Counting the Days".

"Counting the Days" is the first single off COLLECTIVE SOUL's sixth studio album, "Youth", due on November 16, 2004 through the group's own newly formed label El Music Group. The track has reportedly been a Top 10 single at radio and is featured in nationally televised NASCAR and NFL events.

Although the rest of the song sounds nothing like METALLICA, the main riff in "Counting the Days" is almost an identical copy of the opening/main riff in METALLICA's "King Nothing". Listen to both tracks and judge for yourself:

COLLECTIVE SOUL – "Counting the Days" (Windows Media)
METALLICA – "King Nothing" (Windows Media)

A thread on this subject has been started on the official COLLECTIVE SOUL message board at this location.
