I used to spin for a mobile disco before (during the time of 89 DMZ, Magic 89.9 & 99.5RT) until now, i still do spinning ocassionally specially when our client requested for some good ol' 80"s, ballroom and oldschool 90's music, i still have my old  reliable Technics SL turntables (not mkII) and about more than a thousand 12" inch records in my collection. Iba pa rin ang mga tugtugan nuon. Vinyl Forever din ako.

i am based in the US though i was born and raised in the PI so i still speak the language quite well. i DJed a lot in Chicago, around the midwest, and on the east coast when warehouse parties and raves were an underground thing.

there are quite a few people on here that DJ..i know Jepoy does. *calling jepoy*

favoring CDs or vinyl is purely up to taste. since i came up on vinyl and spun them for most of the years when i was actively DJing, i still prefer the tactile sensation of vinyl. i remember when Rich Hawtin started gigging around with the prototype of FS in the early 90s, I talked to him briefly about it wanting to know more because the alternative of going CDs for me wasn't really an attractive choice. i thought,"holy cr@p! vinyl with the flexibility of playing rough mixes on mp3?!? forget expensive test presses and wasting CDs! this is the sh*t!" granted, at that point I wasn't sure if someone was going to license the technology and expand on it but thank God someone did because nothing scares DJs more than damaging their precious vinyl. i think i remember him saying the folks that helped him develop it were some dudes from Amsterdam who did the design and coding of the software and he field tested it. I know Rich doesn't even lug vinyl around anymore for safety reasons...but tons of people still buy em and transfer the songs to mp3 to play out.

Difference between a 33 & 45 rpm?, well halos wala naman kaso yung mga Vinyl na galing europe (UK & Germany) na 45 rpm ang speed parang mas masarap gamitin.

i started spinning in the late 80's/ early 90's. spinning was something i could do when i wasn't playing in bands. spinning is never too late...a party is a party and a good DJ is just that, one is never too old to party:) get yourself some good music, practice spinning and play out at parties whenever you can. when i started i gigged everywhere, gallery events, student events, loft parties, warehouse parties, clubs..whatever..just to get the exposure and practice. hell i even gigged for free a lot but eventually got paying gigs. the idea is to just have fun, read the crowd and direct the party...there are a lot of nuances to being a DJ and a lot has to do with reading the crowd to move a party.

songs are transferred to mps either by recording them manually into a computer (usually applies for records) or just ripping CDs into mps. you will need some kind of audio interface to hook up your tables to a mixer and the direct outs to go into a computer via USB or firewire. mixers usually have monitor outs and main outs, you would be taking the main L and r main output and connecting that to your computer audio interface.

@junkers: the difference is just the rpm pressing of the record. some lengthier tracks tend to use 45 to fit the song on a piece of vinyl which is quite often seen being offered by techno and house labels, not so much prog. these days I still get 45 promo pressings which have a song on both sides, usually remixes, acapellas or instrumentals.

depends on the type of crowd and the bill. if the rest of the guys on the bill for the night are techno guys, you will most likely not want to experiment too much and play prog tunes if the folks there are mainly tech or house heads. for house stuff, i like spinning a mix of old stuff and new so i always have a few classic tunes in my set for folks that know that stuff. the 80s was prime ground for house, especially Chicago house, so anything from that time and the 70s disco era is wonderful material. some newer tech house stuff is awesome too because they use lots of elements from those eras.  hope this answers your question.

you can basically scratch any record but it boils down to which songs go well with another track. only your imagination is the limit.

mismo!

even then very popular "FREEEESSHHHH" or "AAAAHHHH" sound was part of some old hiphop record before it was made as a scratch sample.

may i ask sir whats the difference of the 33 and 45rpm setting?

33 rpm or 331/3 revolutions per minute is normally the speed of long playing (LP) records, are slower in speed than what was the standard (78 rpm) thus you can put more "songs" or "information" in the LP.  45 rpm is reserved normally for the smaller 45 rpm singles, thus there is only one song or a single in one 45 rpm record.  The main difference is speed (revolutions per minute).  In terms of clarity, the LPs had better sound compared to the singles although the way it is is th faster the speed, the better sonically.  RCA however, was able to develop something they termed as "micro-groove" which put the LP sonically superior than the 78 or 45 rpm.

I was lucky enough to experience playing records as a disc jockey (60s, 70s and 80s) for stations like DZBM-AM, DZUW-AM and 99.5RT.  Although I also did disco dj'ing (I would say we were the first generation disco dj's during the early days, this was prior to Where Else, Stargazer and the other popular dance joints during that time), we had our share of really nice segues.  We use to do extended versions of "Long Train Running," Van McCoy's "Do the Hustle," and others. Did we prepare a playlist?  No, we basically just play it by ear, and feel how the people would react to certain songs.  We would try new, untested stuff, but sandwich them with two familiar ones.  That always worked.  We normally reserve the ones that are very familiar, popular and everybody dances to during the peak hours - about 10:30 to about 12 midnight.  Disco parties kinda taper down about 1 am during those times.

Just nice to reminisce.

thanks for sharing, mike. i always like hearing and learning from vets about how DJing was "back in the day" since I grew up with a lot of the songs you may have spun. I have my parents to thank for pumping out the tunes a lot at home.

it is nice to know that testing tunes on a crowd hasn't really changed much over the years. for a long time, new productions were always troublesome to test for artists and labels I worked with because you always had to do a test pressing. when CDs came out, the cost was bumped down some but you still had to spend for CDs. when FS came out, i was elated because I could test out fresh productions on the table the same day i would finish a track! very awesome.

@jepoy. busy din ako and i haven't spun as much as i would like to. i did a couple gallery shows this year and a one-off stint for a makeup and lingerie store opening for a friend but that was it. i am doing more acoustic/ jazz gigs these days.
