Going 64-bit!
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:24:28 PM »
in the office, we've recently turned Windows 7, 64-bit. and i'm planning on adapting the same thing for my personal pc at home.

i've been a 32-bit user my whole life so i'm going to be new at this.

any insights on the can-do's and can't-do's with 64-bit?

i know a few people are having a hard time locating compatible drivers for software that can run in 64-bit. but since all the software i plan to use are now also promoting 64-bit versions, i think this will turn out to be an advantage.

what do you think?

i made the switch! :) my system is now running on 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. you'll need 4GB of RAM to really enjoy this OS. so far i'm not having any problems with my web browser.

ah, i read Adobe Flash has problems with browsers on 64-bit. try running the 32-bit versions of your browser.

or try Google Chrome, i installed Adobe Flash yesterday and it worked. here's a photo i uploaded just now, which means that it's supposed to work. :)

Only the OS and hardware are 64-bit, files can be 32- or 64-bit depending on format. There is .w64 for 64-bit .wavs, for example. Image files are still 32-bit. The bugs you mentioned earlier are usually with early or beta drivers, or maybe even beta OS; the -RC version of Win7 has been working quite well, but MS started to have it shut down after 2 hours of use. This after they said it was good to use until May 2010... damn them.

you can use up to 128 Gb of ram, among other things. most mobos today are already 64-bit capable, it's the OS that hinders them.

Next logical step would probably be 128-bit, not 84. The actual memory limit of 64-bit is 17.2 billion gigabytes or 16 exabytes of ram. 128 Gb is only a drop in the ocean. If you want to compute for 128-bit, do the math, but to give you a heads up, 64-bit memory limit is computed as 2 raised to 64 hence, 16 exabytes.

wow 84 bit! :-D

32-bit OS has a maximum of 4GB of memory (even less, since the OS recognizes only about 3.2GB or something)

...but MS started to have it shut down after 2 hours of use. This after they said it was good to use until May 2010... damn them.

can you elaborate on that please?

Downloaded the beta, then RC version of Win7 last year in order to evaluate it for 64-bit use, specifically with Gerard Salonga's pc which needed to access LOTS of ram (12 Gb at present) for sample playback. Needless to say, Gerard was not only satisfied, but also enthusiastic with the performance of his Core i7 machine that I spec'ed for the job. We're planning on a dual proc machine (a la Mac Pro) but the mobo can be hard to come by.

Anyway, the start of Feb. saw a notice on a lot of sites that MS had timed the RC release to begin shutting down computers after 2 hrs. of use. This only affect users of the RC versions and not the OEM or full release of Win7. I'm peeved that MS said the software was good up to June 2010, and I expected that the shutdown would have occurred April or maybe May. Oh well...

The least you can use is Home Premium but if you need XP Compatibility, then get the Professional version. Unfortunately, getting the 64-bit versions here is difficult for some strange reason. Apparently someone has the impression that we don't need 64-bit versions. Foolish, misinformed people those. tsk, tsk...  :|

it says on the windows website that versions as low as home premium has the 64-bit install disks.  hmmm... i better confirm with the store whether the boxed set is complete. thanks!
