Consistency,Tempo and Timing
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:02:04 PM »
Fellow Drummer, i need your help, this is the situation.

since i started playing drums two years ago, no one personally teach'ed me,

and i think some of you didn't also.

i play drums only with my speakers and sounds, i just keep on following songs

so i just keep on practicing different kinds of beats and rollings, but then i realize when i take a video

i saw and hear that in random circumstances, i'm being out of timing
(that i thought that i was in timing, during that time)

how can i fix it??, please help

here are some ways:

1. try a metronome or a click ( i think meron sa ibang Zoom guitar effects nito, even sa keyboards) - for rhythm and timing consistency

2. Headphone/ear muffs - for you to muff some of the noise (like guitars and vocals)

3. Air Drumming - Try this very helpfull lalu n sakin...

get a decent metronome like korg ma-30 (because it has quarter, eighth, sixteenth and triplets that you can practice) and a practice pad...  when you practice especially with eighth, sixteenth and triplets, keep in mind that you have strike your practice pad or drums exactly in time with the click...  :-D

sir thats my BIG problem  since i had nothing but myself to teach, hindi po ako marunong ng intermediate nor basic reading identifying of notes, "when you practice especially with eighth, sixteenth and triplets"

may you please give me a thought or basic example for that? maybe nagagawa ko sya hindi ko lang po alam ang tawag or ang count

@sir digidikdik: i play with my sounds every afternoon 4:30-6pm, mai consider na po ba na practice yun??

+100 to that!

- regarding note reading, bumili ka lang ng drum mags or online madaming tutorials on how to read notes.. ako man walang nagturo sa akin, self study lang lahat ako all the way.. tsaka ung practice time mo 4:30 to 6pm everyday swerte ka na! ako nga once a week lang kada off nakaka-practice, 8PM to 10PM lang ako nakaka-jam sa set ko.. when not in my set, laging aral online ako (habang nag-philmusic sabay practice sa pad) madaming paraan, just open up your willingness to learn bro! cheers!

nood ka lang sa youtube bro. then apply mo yung techniques. yung metronome, isa yan sa pnakaimportanteng gamit ng musikero. madali lang naman yun gamitin. kung mejo out of budget ka, merong mga downloadable na metronome sa net. once you've heard it, for sure malalaman mo kung panu sya gagamitin.
watch your problem? ;p

my friend if you have metronome use it as guide but you dont have use your hihat as your time keeper how? everytime your practicing sticking or rudiments keep your hihat in quarter or moderate tempo and if your comfortable in always doing it then try it, make a beat while your hihat is playing consistently using your left foot. i hope it can help you keep it up my friend lets continue to learn Godbless,...

metronome  :-D i use Matrix MR500, mura lang 'to pero it does the job. start slow. pag wala kang ginagawa, salang ka ng metronome. kahit wala ka sa practice pads or drumset, basta naririnig mo yung click ng metronome didikit na yan sa utak mo hehe  :-D

as for note reading, sobrang daming resouces sa paligid natin lalo na sa internet. hanap hanap ka lang sa tabi tabi  :-)

eto example ng counting (try lang  :-D)

1    2    3    4 = Quarter note

1  n  2  n  3  n  4  n = Eighth note

1 - e - n - a - 2 - e - n - a - 3 - e - n - a - 4 - e - n - a = Sixteenth Note

1 - trip - let - 2 - trip - let - 3 - trip - let - 4 - trip - let = Triplets

try mo kantahin yung countings bro, mas madali hehe

sana nakatulong to bro

I think Zoom G2 may metronome/click - para sa consistency ng speed, pag nag recording ka, lalu na sa digital track recording meron kang maririnig na click.. na most of the time mawawala ka sa timing... I got that lesson learned the hard way..
2. Headphone/ear muffs - for you to muff some of the noise (like guitars and vocals)
siguro?? never tried those pa eh...
3. Air Drumming - Try this very helpfull lalu n sakin...

Aba, pareho tayo...

yes, but not always, you can put the bass in between, even two bass beats in between (called bass triplets)

my friend if you have metronome use it as guide but you dont have use your hihat as your time keeper how? everytime your practicing sticking or rudiments keep your hihat in quarter or moderate tempo and if your comfortable in always doing it then try it, make a beat while your hihat is playing consistently using your left foot. i hope it can help you keep it up my friend lets continue to learn Godbless,...
yeah, that could work but you can't train for consistency and tempo since you are just relying on your left foot for tempo not a metronome that will not slow down or go faster...  :-D

oh ok bro, i mean self taught din ako since nagstart ako nung 1996 then i learned basic counting and note reading through the internet and other resources. well tenga tenga lang din naman ako pag nag-aaral ng songs pero for some reason kinailangan ko din ang note reading and counting. every drummer may kanya kanyang preference naman e and for me, siguro dahil sa work ko na din ang pagtugtog, malaking bagay para sa akin na natutunan ko yung mga ganito :-D

to bro vhinming: sana nakatulong yung lahat ng tips na nasabi dito. practice lang and patience makukuha mo din yan. happy drumming bro  :-D

back to basic bro...

everything is important....

if your willing enough to learn makukuha mo tong mga toh...

ako nag self study din tapos nuod nuod sa mga banda at kilala kong drummer kapag may rehearsal cla...especially mag online para malaman mo yung gus2 mong matutunan then kapag may pagkakataon drum clinic attend agad...hehehe

lastly practice dun sa gus2 mong matutunan...start slow hanngang bumilis sa gus2 mong beat....kung meron metronome that's the best thing to have....

+1! Back to the basics...wag kang mahiya kung babalik ka doon.

Meron akong na free to dl na metronome on my Nokia5800, no need to buy one.

METRONOME/CLICK TRACK thread
http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php?topic=9883.0

akin IPOD ko lang ang gamit ko na metronome.. download it here FREE!
http://www.reztronics.com/prod01.htm

meron din cel-based metronome; read on! :-)

Ok! I found the email. The programmer is Randy Da Silva, he works for SMART. He's also a drummer. Here's his email, just contact him directly:

---

From: rfdasilva@smart.com.ph

Hi everyone!

I recently created a metronome program for Mobile Phones that support
Java MIDP 2.0.

To anyone who's interested, I'm selling the program for fifty
pesos(P50.00). This includes version 1.0 and all subsequent major
releases (1.1, 1.2, 1.3......). This, however, does not include new
versions(2.0, 3.0, 4.0......).

Currently, it's a very simple program with the following basic features:

-Adjustment of Beats per Minute (BPM)

-Adjustment of Tone

-Adjustment of Volume

Just contact me at 0918-3371758 or reply to me privately if interested.
I'll send you the program and have you try it out. If you're happy with
it, then you can pay me. If you're not happy, then just delete it, or
continue using it minus the clear conscience. =)

Thanks!

Randy

those ear muffs used either by shooters or pilots are really are helpful to nail those beats and accents to mere perfection. kahit earphones tapos takpan ng earmuff lang gamitin mo makakasabay ka na ng maigi sa music basta totally isolated yung drums bukod lalu pa gaganda tunog ng drums. kumbaga eh parang binaba mo ng 3 yung volume ng drums para marinig mo mabuti yung music at mas masasabayan mo ng maigi ganyan lang naman teknik ng mga studio drummers.

also find some minus one (without drums) songs for drummers kasi madali sumabay sa music na may drums na pero yung ala hehe medyo mahirap lalu na kung old school jazz.

don't forget to re3cord yourself .
