rhythm.

have a strong rhythmic foundation and vocabulary. you can't play the part if there's no rhythm, you ain't got a thing if you don't have the swing.

then you can focus on harmony and melody. nearly all guitarists spend the majority of their guitar life with just scales, noodles and spaghetti. but if you have a strong innate sense of rhythm, you can play anything over any chord.

and while you are at it, listen, listen, listen... study the styles of the "malalim" players. eat, sleep and [gooey brown stuff] jazz. soon, it'll be part of your system. you may get in an hour, it may take you half your lifetime. but its DAMN worth it ;)

find a good sensei that can lead you to the path. its just a path. the destination is elusive.

there are 3 approach to jazz improvisation to check your progress or improve on which area you lack:
1. scale/s
2. chord/s (improvising using chord tones)
3. rhythmic
"Or a combination of all three"
i suggest you also jam with all sorts of musicians... from the best to the worst... ang pinag aralan ko ng 4 years sa conservatory of music ay natutunan ko lang ng 1 month ng constant jamming outside with different musicians kasi hands-on.. you get to see first hand on what works & what doesn't.. :D

Before anything else, I think you'll have to qualify what you mean by 'malalim' ..

'Malalim' can be anything from Scofield to Scott Henderson to Allan Holdsworth .. or even John McLaughlin

But even that being said, a lot of the guys who we normally assume to be treading on 'not-so-heavy' ground, such as Carlton, Ritenour and their kind, can actually play 'heavy' when they want to ..

Even Benson can sound killer when he wants to ..

Does 'lalim' necessarily connote 'playing outside' or hinting at atonality?

It would definitely help a lot if you could cite some players of that genre so we can provide an appropriate peg ...

Btw, jinno, are you Allan of Candid Records? ..

gud posts...

well i think playing deep depends on how you perceive the word 'deep'...
example, playing a sustained or spacy motif- others may say two notes are easy to play but think again how coltrane emphasizes long notes, as well as david torn...pat metheny for instance others may consider him as smooth jazz player example song; 'james', but listen to 'song x'... you'll see differnt kinds of aproaches when dealing with what we call'deep'...

tnx
