FILLS, you count em' or you feel em'?
« on: May 11, 2010, 06:28:04 PM »
Good day!

Regarding fills, short, medium, or long fills.
Do you most of the time count them like 4 single strokes, 2 kicks, 2 single, 4 kicks etc?
or
You just feel it and lay it on the drums?

For me i just feel it (like sing the beat in my head then convert it to my drums) because i believe I can create a more artistic rolls/ fill and I dont get the feeling of being constricted to a given pattern.
The downside is, sometimes i mess up and hit at the wrong note.....so I'm starting to study counting my fills already.

Thanks!

I count whenever I try to create a cool fill or whenever I practice spreading the singles/doubles/triplets strokes on the kit. And when all the  rehearsing-the-fill is done, i just let loose and feel the beats.

I subdivide and count according to the space in a measure left for me to do a fill.

I don't really count.
Pero, you feel how long the pattern is, so you know where to stop and start, for the most part. I stick to simple linear patterns.  :-D

First off, you must know "by-heart" yung song...

Now since memorize mo na yung song.. you then mix it with your emotions then... automatic nang papasok yung mga fills mo dude.. (works for me!)

yeah, tama nga sir. i pay around fills on some songs that' i've been playing for quite a while too.

what about sa gig sir? would it matter that the fills you used from one gig is different from the other? considering you play the same song. or ok lang na magkaiba yung fills.. depends on how you want to interpret the song?

There should be harmony between your heart and your mind when writing fills (or even for drumming in general). While your heart pours out the inner Hulk in you through your hands, your mind watches over so you keep time.

Take it from someone who always lets the heart take over while syncopating, and in effect loses time.  :-D

Both,sa feel minsan mahirap ulitin pag live hehe..

Nangyayari yan everytime! nung sabado lang i did something really amazing. ngayon di ko na maalala. alam ko na lang maganda ginawa ko.

I hate it pa when bandmates tell me na: Uy, maganada yung ginawa mo dun sa blahblah. Gawin mo uli yun.
ako naman si: Alin? Ganito?
sila: Hindi. Basta ginawa mo yun e.

I end up transcribing what I did.

Halos lahat kasi ng fills niya may accent sa bawat downbeat with a kick, so madali mabilang.

I guess foot-counting with hats si Bonzo. I realized that yung bass drums niya sobrang fused sa marami niyang fills, or maybe ito yung tinatawag na foot ostinatos; kumbaga running bass yung kick niya with a premeditated pattern (na tunog fill).

Metronome-based practice? Sana ako rin. Hehehe. Musta Gep?

I write the notes down, for accuracy purposes.

Then practice the counts, and eventually I learn to feel it. After being comfortable with the fills, I can innovate more, spread the fills throughout the kit, parang nag-o-automatic ka na (RLRR-LRLL) around the kit. Different sound, but same concept.

Nabasa ko matagal na sa Drumming magazine yata: Enjoy playing the drums and feel it. Don't think too much, to a point that everyone can hear you thinking.
