great band, great songwriter but not as revolutionary as you think.

You guys ARE forgetting about one guy who really revolutionized the music scene but i am not saying to give him all the credit.

That guy is RICO BLANCO. Compared to Ely, Rico writes their songs (but not all) and this guy is a great innovator when performing onstage, imagine hearing a whole new version of their songs in their respective albums.

Another great innovator is Ricci Guranggo (tama ba?) Imagine, 2 na ang sumikat na kasama sya (not pinasikat nya): Barbie Almalbies and Kitchie Nadal, I won't wonder if Lou Gee will follow the same path as those two. Magaling kasi ang diskarte nila sa live performance.

Another is Barbie Almalbis. Imagine christian songs going into mainstream, that is freakin' hard man.

Also with all due respects to those who contributed to the philippine rock scene.

Juan dela Cruz - who i think started it all. Sensya na, di pa ako existing nung era nila eh.
The Dawn - Hands down, one of the greatest influences.
True Faith - Another great live performer
Side A - i think naging foundation ng mga showbands today
Wolfgang - bringing the R into ROCK
Razorback - hebigat sounds man
Slapshock - okay, okay let's give them a little credit for going mainstream to give light to their genre with Greyhoundz et all. Aminin man natin na mas magaling ibang hard core kesa sa kanila, it's their songs we sing to when we hear it on the radio.
Bamboo - for bringing back the patriotism of filipinos during the dark times (Noypi & Hallelujah)
Urbandub - Grabe, a whole new kind of music from Cebu.

Kung meron pa ako nakalimutan... pakidagdag na lang. I hope na di ako nagkamali sa pagsabi ng sarili nilang influences in the music industry, well these are my opinions anyway...

hmmm dito sa place namin Olongapo most of the bands here, hindi naging influence ng mga pinoy bands, kasi alam naman nating lahat na nag karuon na Military Base ng Amerika dito kaya ayun, karamihan ng band dito lalo na nuong 70's halos lahat sila into Van Halen, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc. sad but true.

di ko magets kung bakit may era/wave pa na sinasabi, i mean yep they all made their point by playing music we all loved pero sa totoo lang nagkataon lng tlga na madami nakarelate sa kanta nila nung time na tinugtog nila yun at narelease at nagka airplay. personally i think wala tayong karapatan para magsabi kung sino tlga nagsimula ng kung ano man, maybe jacaranda's just swept-off with ely buendia's talent pero i think he(jacaranda) should also recognize the other bands who shared their talents at the boom of the 90's band era. ely's a good songwriter, so is bamboo, dong abay, joey ayala, vic facultad, cynthia alexander, etc. iba-iba lng taste natin. kung ano man naririnig natin noon malaking factor yun sa mga gumagawa ng kanta ngayon, mejo overrated lng tlga dating ni ely dun sa sinulat ni jacaranda. one more thing, kung maganda kinalabasan ng kanta ng isang songwriter hindi yun ibig sabihin na sya lng dapat bigyan ng credit kasi di tutunog ng maganda yung song kung di pasok ang mga bandmates mo sa music na ginagawa mo.... just my two cents

chong umalis si bamboo sa pinas at pagbalik nya, kinuha nya si aira at nathan from kapatid at vic mercado. sasama ba sa kanya tong mga sagad sa talents na to kung olats sya? yung mga taong tulad mo di ko magets, anlakas mang-criticize, manlait at mag-isip ng negatibo sa kapwa pero asan ka? andun si bamboo at nageenjoy sa ginagawa nya and making money out of it. if you think selling out is such a bad thing then i think you should stop listening to music baka patayin mo silang lahat! hehehe! sa hirap ng buhay ngayon kelangan mo tlgang pagkakitaan ang kahit anong maisip mo, yung mga tulad ni bamboo sa totoo lng ang nakakainggit; imagine making profit out of something you love to do the most.

I have to disagree. First of all, there's nothing special or innovative about Rivermaya's music. Second, the guy's a trendrider. Why? When rap-metal was big a few years ago the guy changed his image to look like a slapshock member(fortunately, rico can't play metal even if his life depended on it). Right now they sound like coldplay. I'd pick Ely over him anytime in terms of songwriting prowess.

I think Ely is a good songwriter, an okay live performer, and was influential in OPM history as part of the Eraserheads. I give him props for that, but the extent to what one thinks his influence is in the music scene may vary. Their sound is not something that influences my band, for example, but it may be quite the opposite for others.
