Radiodredd rips you off!!!
« on: August 17, 2006, 12:50:01 PM »
Everyone is raving about songs being ripped off by one band or another! What
is "the seven-note rule"? Exactly how many combinations of four-chord rock
can there possibly be? Aw, cmon, do songwriters have to check every song from
the history of music to avoid inadvertently ripping someone off?

Tune in on Friday where the Radiodredd faculty, your self-appointed,
self-serving guardians of intellectual property and music snobbery will rip
off musical rip-offs as our latest lesson.

No sacred cows here! Both foreign and local! Cueshe and OnL? Lumang kwento na
yan! You'll be amazed at the stuff we've uncovered! Rip-offs - on purpose and
by accident? [gooey brown stuff] or not? You be the judge!

Text in your comments, advice and unsolicited opinions. God knows we'll be
doing that ourselves! Text in your hatemail - as if we care! Type NUMSG_<your
message> and Send it all to 29107.

In the meantime, check this out:

Well sometimes these "rip-offs" may actually not be deliberate, so I believe you should listen to as much music as you can to avoid writing a song that's even remotely similar to something else.

Para namang ang ganda at ang gagaling ng taste sa music ng mga hosts ng radio show na yan.

Nung napakinggan ko, they were dissing Kala and hailing this another band(I forgot the name, too insignificant to remember), saying, "...this is the band that Kala wants to be...."  Well, that band sucked!

But hey, I'm no Kala fan either.

You take us too seriously. That Kala thing was a joke. Besides, you missed the point. The lesson was not supposed to be how good our 'taste in music' is or how lousy yours is, but on the thin lines between plagiarism, sampling, tributes and influence.

(Of course we have better taste, we have a radio show. You don't.)

i think ripping off is something anyone can probably pull off. if this band wants to sound like tht band, or steals certain parts. basically, for a listner who doesnt know the other band and likes the song, then good. although someone who rips off, can fool alot of people, but can't fool himself. and i think composition becomes more fulfilling for a person if it is legitimately original. bahala na sila kung gusto nila magripoff, though some people don't care. some people are satisfied in basing all their compositions trying to emulate a certain idol. or perhaps write 1000 diatonic songs using major and minor triads. if thats what they're looking for in their musicianship. well for me thats not what i want. but if my mind is so preoccupied criticizing other people's works. i'd go insane. good thing there are other people who can carry the burden of worry about that and in the process hopefully make a positive change
