Agreed. X-trek, Lazer (lowends) and other China-made generics are almost identical. Standard rock sizes. Old-style tom mounting. Double-braced but light hardware. Same with old Fernandos, LA Drums, etc. I suggest you take a look at DDrums (be wary of hardware issues though) or the newer Fernandos.

If not, you could score a good kit if you're patient enough at the Classifieds. Damn, like richie's Tama Superstar shell pack for 15k, SOLD just mere hours after he posted it.@_@

I went to JB yesterday, nalito lalo ako, I saw this Gretsch Catalina Ash 40k(original price 60k+ ata) with zbt na.. plus a free 8inch tom, Bundle daw talaga yung cymbals.. Meron pa isang option, Tama Superstar 4 piece 30k.. uggh nakakalito talaga, ano ba mas ok na deal dyan? O baka may maisusuggest kayo na ibang kit? 40k max budget

Thanks

TOL

1) Yung Catalina ba ay 10" 12" 14" 16" tom? or 8" 10" 12" 14" tom?
2) Yung Superstar ba ay 12" 13" 16" tom? (Standard set).
3) Same wood ba yung Catalina at Superstar?? (maple, birch)?

Now let me share my experience (may mapupulot kang araw dito!) hehehe.

Set ko ay Pearl Forum (Fusion Kit = 10" 12" 14" toms). So after some time, I realize the STYLE OF PLAY na gusto ko. Somewhat JEFF PORCARO (TOTO) na LARS ULRICH(METALLICA).

Jeff Porcaro set is (10"12"13"14" toms)
Lars Ulrich (Presently using 10" 12" 16" 16" toms.)

So, bumili ako ng 16" TOM na hindi kakulay nang set ko kasi wala talaga eh (Which is a really PAIN IN THE @$$ to find, Ganun din naman pag bibili ako ng 13" na TOM).

Anyways, now ang set ko at 10" 12" 14" 16" toms.

OR

CATALINA SET na! hehehe.. (dapat pala CATALINA SET NALANG BINILI KO FROM THE START!)  :-D

Moral of the story is...
1) Mahirap mag hanap nang additional TOM.
2)Your should know your style of play. (heavy metal ba? Jazz? pop? Rock?) Standard set ay medyo MALAKAS ang tunog. So "MAS" maganda ang Fusion set or smaller toms sa mga pop, jazz etc.

In ending, kung yung Catalina set sa JB ay 8" 10" 12" 14". I'd go for the standard set ng TAMA. Men by all means, ito na ang bilhin mo!

By the way, meron Ludwig na Birch wood na 40K din sa JB Music ah. Birch ito men at malayong mas maganda sa Maple. Check mo din ito men. Ayus ito.

Hope this helps..

1. Yung Catalina Ash, 8" 10" 12" 14", (which is ok para maluwag sa kwarto ko hehe) 40k with cymbals
2. Yung Superstar, 12" 16" 30k
3. Catalina Ash - Ash, Superstar - Birch+Basswood (not sure)

Pearl Forum Series Drums are made of  6 ply 7.5mm poplar shells. Even the discontinued and the most sold Pearl drum around the world, the Export series was made of poplar shells. The latest edition of the Pearl Forum Series, Forum FZ are still made of poplar shells. Recent upgrades with this kit are just the 'ISS' for both 12'' and 13'' toms which was acquired from the late export series, an additonal C70W cymbal stand for the additonal Pearl crash cymbal(previous forum series only has a boomstand B70W to hold a pearl crash/ride cymbal) and the drum pedal which was upgraded from P-120 to P-120P.

kung ang habol mo sa drums e yung tunog, entry level kits now are pretty much built the same way as high end drums. sa hardware na lang talaga nagkakatalo

If we had not told you about the wood composition would you still love your kit the same? :? If so forget that we even mentioned it. :-D

Do not under estimate Poplar wood as it produces great sound as well, I barely notice the difference between Maple and Poplar on some of my drums. I totally agree with what Peeves and Plep said, to invest in cymbals, good drum heads, and for me to add invest on lessons..

Anyways, yung last post ko is the same.

Pearl popsmear wood   + 16" WTF wood  /Pinstripe = Same sound.

Hmmm.... that's kind a strange. All of a sudden he's selling his drum kit at the classified section. Is it because that he found out that a Pearl Forum kit was made of poplar shells?  :?
