it means hindi naka-screw yung lugs sa mismong drum shell.naka "float" sila around the shell.tingnan mo sa pic na ito:notice how the lugs "float"?solid shell yan, kasi nga no holes drilled to accomodate the lugs.
Adding to that... Since there are no drilled holes in the shell (perhaps except for the vent hole) and no screwed/mounted hardware, the free-floating shell can vibrate freely as a single, unobtruded unit (hence, its name). And what we get is a more resonant snare drum sound.
There is no vent hole in the main shell... It's located in the aluminum cradle behind the snare strainer... Shells are very expensive though...
