Question re Modding an RJ Firebird
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:29:16 AM »
Hi guys!

Im jumping with joy here. Ill be getting an RJ(yep you read that right ) Firebird later today. Its white with chrome parts.

I like white as it is my favorite finish on a guitar other than the natural finish. (maybe because im dark, lol)

Anyway,  I plan to mod it. From the parts to the pups. Ill keep the color of course but the others, will have to be modded.

Do you have any suggestions? Comments?

I will appreciate if you can also design a sample color scheme. (if thats okay).Ayun, salamat ng advance and thanks for keeping me sane from this office boredom Philmusic! :-D

First question is, what music do you play?

and then what do you play, rhythm or lead guitar?

IMHO, first thing to replace will be the Tuners as I am unsure of the quality of the tuners provided with the stock RJ guitar. if you are confident with the tuners, then I advise you to replace the guitar's electronics (pickups and pots) to better ones.

Once you provide some information on your type of music, maybe we can be more specific with the possible upgrades :D

Nice! im assuming you would appreciate a bright sounding pickup then. or if kaya, pacoil split mo yung pickups para may option to go single coil brotherman. IMHO, single coils will be better for SKA because of the twang hahaha

replace mo na rin yung pots and switches to better ones (CTS or bournes) for reliability and consistency.

how much budget mo for the pickups bro? are you brand conscious sa pickups? :)

How about .... NOT modding it.
At least, not yet.

Give it 2-3 months of actual play, to get a practical fix on what you want to change,
and then you can go to town on its ass.

akala ko semi-hollow kukunin mo?

well, im planning for one. its just a great deal i cant pass up bro.
i dont wanna pass up on a great deal for a guitar whihc i would have fun bashing heads in a moshpit. haha.
but semihollw, if there is a great deal. im in. im down with rj ex3s and other moshpit worthy cheap ass guitars.haha.

@ralph, yeah id prolly mod the heck out it. pag sa semi and hollow maingat ako e. but with solid bodies, id like them as angry as they wanna be.

@horge, yeah i wont mod it heavily now. itll be a long process. i had a friend, a fellow philmusician who had one(got robbed) and i think he got those awesome metal and grunge sounds from the guitar sans modding. and i like the look of it. it just screams rock and roll.

@treblinka, will try that too. itll be a long process. it will be the one guitar that will try whore itself with different mods, pups and looks. itll be the maria ozawa
 of my guitars.haha.

Oy wag ka mag-split coil, wala sa manual yan.

Anyway, the one thing you can change right away are the tuners. they're not... even.

haha. the holy guamole of guitar tones.

i will, i plan to. mukhang exciting nga to. one of rj guitars(the ones that are good) main draw for me is that it lends itself to bastardization without guilt.

i cant help but have pornstars as reference but its like drilling the choco tunnel and not having to say sorry afterwards, its part of the deal. hahaha.

regarding gigging, yes it will have its share of it man. it will.

i guess basing on my friends rj firebird, id stick with the mini hums for now. if it needs a few more anger decibels, ill slap in whatever is available. heck i might have something made by mang max for me.

Im on the warpath lust for a firebird as well lately. Non reverse is the way to go, with the tuners behind the headstock, through neck construction, and possibly mini-hums, if I was on a lookout. Possibly pelham blue or if any other hotrod color is available.

Are the RJ's thru-neck, or faux thru neck (e.g.setneck) as with epi firebirds?

Yeah, I agree with not modding it first.  Modding for no reason at all other than "modding for the sake of modding" is a slippery slope.  Malay mo, what you have there right now fits in with the big picture (type of music played, etc.).  Play the axe till you get to know it's nuances.  List those nuances down and assess whether "like" (ie, keep), "don't like - plan to tweak", "don't like - modify NOW", "don't like - but will modify once may kwarta" or "don't like - can live with it".  From there you should be able to lay out a road map as to what you plan to do to end up with a killer axe.

"Do the right things then do things right" seems to sum everything up.  Give the axe a chance to show what it can do in its virgin state before you go hog wild and tear it to bits.

this hehe i was looking out for a "bulky" guitar and parang ok nga ito for just rocking around.

i go with previous suggestions to play with it for a bit, then mod as need be. but if budget is not a problem, or you have donor parts on hand, mod away!

I have an epi truss rod cover and tbird goth pickguard. Pm for the price if you're interested. You'd have to drill a hole for the toggle switch though.

haha. wala pa camera. mamaya hihiram ako. nasa opis e.

@jaco, i like it as is now. i might just change the pickguard as that seems to be the only thing i can do now.
Reason why I got the guitar is its dirt cheap, plus its white. So I Jumped. havent plugged it yet so I dont know but so far strumming it unplugged, I get kraaang krinnnng kraaannnggg which tells me Im not suited to be a guitarist. But thats not the point. Hahaha.

I got it cheap, and i plan to mod it cheap and rock out with it. Haha. No sense in getting it inexpensive and then putting all my hard earned dough in it. It is still an RJ.

@fizz budget is always the problem. people here can donate though. ahahaha.

@jeba, thanks man. Im okay with the truss cover, as for the PG I think I can build one myself. Im doing this DIY, PUnkass And cheapass way. Thank you very much.
