do you copy note for note?

I used to with my garage band (friggin' Matt Cameron gave me a hard time!!).

Nowadays, I study the groove more and if there's that signature fill.

pag classic songs or original nung band at session ako, i take the time to learn it note for note

Otherwise, makakalimutan mo lahat yung sinipra mo :-D :-D :-D

Seriously, when we do cover songs (w/ my band before) I try to copy the drum parts note for note.

So Be It.

hmm....

i try nowadays yung sinabi ni bro dio, feel the song first before playing it. Malaki ang naging difference nito kasi kapag na-feel mo na yung song, you will know beforehand kung kelan ang mga bagsakan, fills, and stuff. Yun nga lang, you really have to concentrate when feeling the song. I don't try to copy all the notes required in the song kasi medyo advanced novice pa lang ako. So what is important to me is to get the basic groove and feel, then play with it....

lately id just get the groove and do my own fills ... whichever sound good.  if the drum track is a little complicated, i find myself listening carefully to the fills and try to catch the rudiments at work.  sifra is a great learning opportunity.  also, id try different ways of executing a certain groove or feel to get maximum comfort, or stroke quality.

No, I don't copy note for note.  I try to put my own personality and style into the music that I'm covering or interpreting.  But still, I make it a point that what I'll be playing will still be in respect to the song's theme.  The spirit has to be there.

Example...  Whenever I play Toto songs, I am reminded of Jeff Porcaro and Simon Phillips.  So, I should somehow emphatize their drumming, musicianship, and their spirit.  But that doesn't mean that I should copy their parts note for note.  Most of what Jeff and Simon played in their recordings are perfect drum parts for me.  I may copy it at first.  But later on, I try to put my own thing into it.  Yet, I still need to respect the music and its drum parts.  I also look at it as my own little tribute to my musical heroes.

And yes, like what mike/daemonite said, whenever I'm learning a song, I feel the song first.  I don't just listen to the drum parts.  I listen to the whole song.  I search for the theme.  I observe what each individual instruments are doing, and how they complement the song to make everything work in harmony.  I try my best to internalize the song.  I put myself into a songwriter's mindset; meaning, I try to pretend that I'm the one who wrote the song.  And if I were the composer, how would I express my music?  I search for what works for the song; what makes the music beautiful.

So, I listen to the song over and over, up to the point when I can already feel it and somehow relate to it.  Once I get to that point, I grab my notebook, pen and metronome, then start making my kodigo.  Then, I listen to it again to make sure I got it right.  Then, I'll play along with it, whether on my practice pad or on an actual drumkit (when available).  Then, it's off to the rehearsal studio to actually apply it with my group.

Well, this is how I approach it, and it's what works for me.  Simply put, I don't copy note for note.  Besides, what's the point of being a true artist if you're just going to be a copycat?

gano kayo kabilis "sumifra"?

the song judith by apc took me about three weeks para makuha yung fills, hindi pa perfect yun. hehehehe. much longer yung schism by tool kasi di ako marunong magpeds. until eventually i gave up on it hehehe. theme from conversations with fire was a hard one for me too kasi manipis sya pag yung drumline lang ang sinepra ko. ang medyo madali sifrahin na groove ang focus are the r&b and techno songs kasi tsug-tsag (drum and snare) sya. kaso ang mahirap sa mga yun, kung gaano mo sisifrahin yung groove nya hehehe....

madalas ng mga showband ganyan. lalo na yung mga so called na combo (i differentiate show bands with combo kasi malaki ang difference nila in terms of sifrahan

me and my band make it a point na not to get toO much intact sa pagcocover,, we're still aiming to make whatever we cover our own sound..

as for drumming, ung grooves at bagsakan ang inaaral ko, pero pag dating sa fills, as long as nasa timing at pasok parin sa song,, feel free to drum at ur own style. :D

Hmmm....sa akin naman kasi marami pinapasifra sa akin kada magse-session ako sa showband, i memorize the song into parts like stanza, chorus, bridge and so on para mabilis kabisaduhin. para kasing may generic pattern ang mga kanta lalo na mga classic love songs, tsaka mga r&b. pero i make sure pa rin na medyo malapit sa katotohanan yung tunog nya and i won't sacrifice the groove of the song.

for me, get the general groove of the song, then don't forget the "signature fills" that will identify the song from your playing... tpos, pasok mo na yung mga sarili mong fills... basta don't overdo it...
