question: how did you arrive at the rate you gave yourself? ratings are based on standards of measurement. i guess skill is very hard to measure so when i practice i always give myself a rating of 0. i try to "grade" myself based on the lick/groove im trying to learn. it may take me a day, a week, a month or even a year to be able to rate myself a 10 and i would only give me 10 if i can comfortably incorporate the lick in my playing

then i start back at one...(does brian knight impersonation)

Personally, I don't really mind the numbers and the ratings.

I can say that I'm pretty good or advanced with one concept, but still a novice on another.  And I'm a firm believer that there's always room for improvement and development, even at an advanced level.  There's no finish line.

But okay, if you really insist...  sige, 8 na lang.  It's my favorite number.

@Bamm..ok yan bro ah..I like the way you placed it..hehe!

Its hard to rate..but the way I see its spacio-temporal..that's why the votes are changeable.. If you feel na 10 k good for you..If that's what you really feel you don't have to prove it to anyone but yourself..kung 1 naman eh di still good for yourself..you know where you are and are accepting it thus providing the opportunity for improvement..

VOTE lang..hindi naman to Senatorial Elections eh  :-D plus its reverse able..

Ang sa akin, nag set ako ng specific goals to consider yung level ng pagda drums na gusto kong maabot.  Nakatulong ito para sa akin on what to practice. Syempre kailangan ikaw ang mag set ng sarili mong standard/ criteria for each level.  Iba iba din naman tayo ng style. Pero here's my example:

1-2 Can play basic drum grooves and fills + knows the Rudiments

3-4 Can play different grooves and fills. Someone who is good enough to play w/ a band

5-6 Can read notations and drum charts, na kaya magbasa ng kahit anong drum books

7-8 Can teach drums/ create own drum parts.

9-10 Level of a session drummer, yung kayang mag record in any style of music w/ any  musicians they need to work with.

I agree sa sinasabi ng mga senior members, hindi naman natatapos ang pag improve ng skills ng isang drummer. Also your welcome to disagree, paalala lang na itong level chart ay ginawa ko  para sa akin, sometimes I use this for my students.

But I guess ikaw ang mag set ng challenges sa sarili mo para may way ka to measure if you still would consider yourself as a beginner, comparing it to when you just started playing.

Can you elaborate on this?

So that would mean, lahat tayo pantay sa mga katulad nila Vinnie Colaiuta or Steve Gadd or Neil Peart??

Just playing devil's advocate here... Peace.

I'm somewhere around 1.3 I guess.

It seems I'll be stuck in this level for quite some time considering based on rex's scale, one must know rudiments to qualify to the next level, right? dang dude there are 40 rudiments right not to mention the hybrid ones, im hopeless. hehehe.

i know a couple of rudiments but i forgot what they're called, i never really paid attention to terms, technicalities etc--i just copy what i hear from songs, either respectfully impersonate or improvise. Nonetheless if i see and hear how its done, I could probably nail it [with a bit of practice]. hell i've been doing double strokes almost all my life and only found out what its called some time last year, i break chops with rlrr-lrll and never thought that it's called paradidles until JP told me. thats how crude and behind i am.

So what about those folks like me who pretty much couldnt care less or are not knowledgeable of rudiments but have played in bands? which part of the scale does this fall on?

 :-D

Bangbus,
:-D You don't have to take my scale seriously. Lol! I watched you on you tube and man that was tight. You are definitely not a 1.3. Rudiment terms don't matter, if you know how to execute them and apply it to your playing is what really counts. What's the use of knowing the names if you can't play it or use them to your advantage.
Just a reminder that my scale is for me to challenge myself on what to practice. It doesn't mean I'm greater than anyone. Or no intent to give that impression to make others feel less.He he he Peace man.

Plus learning is a process that sometimes you've skipped some of the levels, then just go back and work on the other stuff.

Other drummers would learn to play the basic, play in a band then teach drum set. But in the  process of teaching they learn to read notes more based on the drum set instructional books they use.  I recently bought some new books to help me work on my rudiments more. So it really never ends on learning new things.

I would rate you, higher than where I'm at, Cheers!
