i guess also for me it also depends on the whole song, if a song should be told by good storytellers, the solos reflects the song as a whole. sometimes, i like when they have very minimalist solos becoz it compliments the song and then there are really simple songs with really orgasmic solos that explode.

Ppppphrasing... :-D
I dont know how to call this but when someone easily manages to continue the solo through chord changes and not sounding off...
Tone plays a good part too... :-D

ako din po, and ang swing feel..

--i listen for over-all musicianship. i look at the level of their
musicality, the quality of their chops, the tightness or interaction
between the players and the dynamics the soloist or group is willing to
allow within the music.

--i listen for development of ideas, how this ideas are expounded and
expressed. i like the musicians use drama and build it to express a
story where they take us to different levels of enjoyment and sadness.

--and lastly, i listen for something that moves me...i listen for
greatness, for the unexpected, the element of surprise and the ability
to discover things that have never been rehashed.

I guess that no matter what genre or form of music a particular solo is for, what's important is that it enhances the overall song--it carries the song to a climax and (on its own) tells either a part or a totally different story.

Sa mga rock guitarists, para sa akin si Carlos Santana ata yung pinakamataas ang "song to goosebump moments"-ratio. :-)

just please someone tell him to stop soloing over the whole godamn song

--ex santana fan
yun yung reason why he's got the high "song to goosebump moments" ratio. he solos over the entire song e. most guitarists, if they're lucky, get only 30 seconds.

it sort of works like the the thousand monkeys with a typewriter and infinite amount of time.

i love santana. :-D

sakin, soaring notes. an example is yung solo ng I remember you ng skid row.  I can feel the notes bleeding. pati solo ng young guns ni bon jovi. si jeff beck ata gumawa ng part na yun, not sure.

and....clean, crisp and clear. may it be fast or slow basta may brilyo...pagdating sa sound.

sa fast music, yung lead ng ship of fools by viciou rumors. hanep!

Two or more octaves without increasing volume, endurance (i.e., can perform in an opera and not a series of 3-4 min pop songs), etc.

A good solo has to tell a story. It should be linear, not just a bunch of licks thrown together in helter skelter fashion.

the solo should be an extension of the musician's soul. it has to be honest & unpretentious.
although chops, good phrasing, & tone are a definite prerequisite, it should go beyond those things.

"Ed is having sex with his girlfriend". - Alan Holdsworth.

i think i heard scott henderson said this on his melodic phrasing lesson..hahaha, it's like you have to over emphasize on something-you have to repeat it with same motifs but in diff exagerrated manners..
