Some things that i do when i play outside:

1.) Bring a waterproof amp cover and payong.

JOKE!

Ok, a few of my ideas in outside playing:

Play the line you just played a half step higher, then play it again again in tune.
Chromatic passing tones
chormatic runs na pataas or pababa then resolving to a chord tone or a note in the corresponding scale

this might sound like a stupid question. if the bassist plays a passing chord (e.g. Bb7 after Bmin7 before Amin7) and soloist does not play notes based on that chord (i choose notes based on the previous chord instead), is that considered outside playing? thanks.

hmm.. that is indeed a question. My hunch... since tension is relative to outside playing, it probably is! Considering, of course, how unrelated your solo notes are to the bassist's. And i guess if you outline the passing chords, that would be "inside" the changes.

As for more outside stuff, Mike Stern has a good approach, too. Since he is well aware of how strong the triad flavor is (it's very expresso) he can warp major and minor triads where they don't seem to fit. Listening to what he does, he pulls it off with solid phrasing through a nice rhythmic motif, usually the triad is quite distant intervallicaly from the chord.

question.

was it a Bb note that the bassist went through or a Bb7 arpeggio?

You might want to find out the relativity of the key to the Bb7 chord. err, i assume you are in the Key of G. IMO, playing the Bb7 notes except for the D note, would be considered playing outside.

wer's sir aya... sya lng mksagot ng buo wid theory p.. :-D

Who, me?

Been too busy playing to talk about it.

Sorry, ha... kakatamad nang pag-usapan yung theory, eh. It would fill the whole thread.

Perhaps Miles' words are apropos...

"Don't be afraid of wrong notes. There are none."

To quote another master, Tots Tolentino, "Kaya nga music theory ang tawag, eh. Hindi siya music fact."

All music theory is just that --- a bunch of theories. Kuro-kuro lang. Tsismax lang 'yan.

It's all a human attempt to impose order upon sounds in the air.

That's all music is. Sounds in the air.

Listen to the sound of the city. A jeepney siren here. A motorcycle's roar over there. The whisper of wheels on wet pavement. A bus's nasal honk. An occasional bird chirp here and there. A traffic enforcer's whistle.

Listen to all that together. Hear the chord it all makes.

Transcribe it.

Name it.

Analyze it.

Play it.

Practise it 'til you can play it faster than Satan.

Put a plastic bag over your head.

After 20 seconds, ask yourself if you still care about "how to play outside".

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

you can use chromatic tones as long as you land on a consonant tone at the end of the phrase :-D or a blue note cool din  :-D
