Hint lang.... the secret is not in the guitar playing.... it's mostly in the drumming. Mabibilang mo sa isang kamay and mga drummer dito sa 'pinas na nakakapalo ng authentic blues shuffle, na siyang nagbibigay ng lagkit at libog ng blues. Most local guys who try to play the blues are rock drummers who hear the beat on 1 and 3.... tuluyan nagiging run-of-the-mill blues-rock ang pulso ng kanta, like any high school or garage band. Magaling ang gitarista, poste ang bahista, pero kung 1 and 3 ang drummer, hanggang blues-rock lang resulta -- galit pero walang libog. The guys who know what they are doing hear the beat on 2 and 4 -- like the old time R&B dudes and the Chicago school -- that's where the grease and lagkit resides.

Sir, pwede ko bang i-post to sa Phil Blues Soc. page/group? :)

Uy, ngayon ko lang nakita to ah!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, blue_buddha, Bitoy, Ferdie, and especially Bart (ni outline mo pa lahat ng genre ah... LOL).

Yeah, I do miss the Manila blues scene. Unfortunately, if you're not gigging actively there is less motivation to practice and learn new stuff. It's just lazy playing. And living in an apartment building makes playing guitar (and cranking an amp) a little limiting. In the meantime I tried to learn kundiman guitar (the original Pinoy blues!).  I've been recording and posting videos for Youtube since I got here, but even that I need to do more of. I'd still like to be able to influence people to listen and learn about these more archaic blues styles. I've also said more than once that I'm happy to conduct an online blues/slide guitar clinic if there's interest.

PS: This thread is like a cat. It has nine lives! LOL

Whos the best pinoy blues guitarist?

So, to respond to the question. I think it helps to categorize from when they became active in the scene:

pre 2005: Jun Lopito, Wally Gonzalez, Kakoy Legaspi
2005 onwards: Chester Manalang, Paul Leobrera

I might have missed someone but off the top of my head these guys are the ones who can really give you that real 'blues' feel and emotion. There are many great blues guitar players out there technically speaking  but to me these guys consistently hit the spot.

^ Hi deltaslim.

What places in Manila would you recommend I find good blues music? You know, the usual hangouts for people who appreciate blues and where blues bands usually or regularly play. Thanks.

we played the last PI jazzfest sa high street a few months ago then a few times sa opening week ng purgatory. nino still sits in with pepe and gary (perez). i think he and gary played 121 last thursday.
