HAHA i was also wondering why a musician would hate chick

you'll be surprised lahed... a guitar teacher in the school where i used to work hates chick corea....he's a guitar player who used to study under joe pass and joe diorio at MIT.

he says chick corea's was too complicated...d daw nya masakyan...

well, that's his problem
guitarist telling the drummer what the intro to laklak was. caught on video.at binilangan pa ang drummer 1-2...1-2-3..lol

Best Chick Corea rhythm sections....

1. Eddie Gomez on bass, Steve Gadd on drums. My peyborayt - from the Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart, Friends, Three Quartets.

2. Stanley Clarke on bass. Airto Moreira on drums and percs. D' Original Return to Poreber with the Brazillian vibe.

3. John Pattitucci on bass, Dave Weckl on drums. The elektric/akoustic band.

I prefer Chick in a piano trio setting, or with a sax. For some reason, I never warmed up to the guitar ensembles (w/ Al Dimeola, Frank Gambale, etc.)

bakit naman sir jim? kung sa bagay, medio overkill nga yung mga chops nila Al at Frankie d' Aussie... but I find Scott Henderson & Carlos Rios chops more tasty especially Carlos solo on "Cool Weasel Boogie", sarap nun! hindi puro shread... maganda yung build up ng solo, may storia.

also, yung nag guest si Chick sa "Electric Guitarist" album ni John McLaughlin, ganda ng sagutan nila sa "Do You Hear The Voices That You Left Behind?" ( w/c was dedicated to John Coltrane ). that's freakin' awesome! Chick played the mini-moog... hanggang ngayon pinapakingan ko pa rin yun!

I was at the Acoustic Band's press conference at the Mla. Hotel, had the chance to talked w/ Chick himself for more than an hour...I was corresponding w/ him when I was in college, nangu-ngulit kng paano adliban yng Humpty Dumpty, 500 Miles high & of course yung Spain... ( wala pang e-mail nuon! ), pro nagre reply naman siya explaining theory & jazz impov, He was one of the nicest musicians I've met... (unlike Miles who will scream at you). I gave Chick an Egyptian papyrus painting of King Tut as a gift, while he autographed my Yamaha SHS-10 portable keyboard. He's such a great person, even asked me to convoy w/ his entourage goin to PICC. We were at the band's sound check, we had photo ops, I was even horsing around w/ Weckl & Patitucci at the backstage, food was catered, there was booze... Chick was a chain smoker while Dave & John are health buffs.

during the concert, I was at the first row & all of the "senyor" guys of jazz we're behind me...hahahaaa!!! I even went on stage after the encore piece & gave high fives w/ the band while the lights went up in full view of the audience, hahahaaaa... lagay-lagay ang mga senyor ika nga...  some of the local guys asked me to invite the band for a jam at calesa bar...hot na hot c mar dizon maka jam sina chick, pero mas gusto nila mag ikot sa "tourist belt" sa Mabini w/ their sponsors... some more "Kodakan" w/ the band... I had my old RTF albums signed by Chick... a-apply sana kong roadie sa entourage nila eh...ganun ako ka fanatic kay Chick, may illusion pakong sumunod kina Carlos Rios, Scott Henderson,Al di Meola, Frank Gambale, etc... as session guitarist ni Chick, pero suntok na yun sa buwan...
bakit? sino nasigawan ni miles davis? hahhahaaha adik kasi eh no? hehehe

Mild Seven Jazz Fest; Aug 10,1988. Miles Davis "Live". One of the highlights in my life... needless to say, the concert was f__kin' awesome! nai tape ko pa yun sa walkman recorder  ( na nai "james bond" ko papasok sa Queen Elizabeth Stadium )kaya may bootleg ako, hehehe...pinoy talaga...

after his set, baba ako para mag ninja move para maka pasok sa backstage. hinabol ko siya para tanungin kung totoong naka jam niya si Hendrix ( may mga articles kasing naglabasan noon na nagka jam sila nila Mc Laughlin kasama si Miles ), at kung sinong favorite niya sa lahat ng mga naging gitarista niya... Ayun, nasigawan ako! "I dont give interviews, I don't give blood either"!

In spite of his attitude, I still dig the man. Not his personality but his music. siya na mismo nagsabi na: " it's an insult to call someone a fan "... I just love his music... from his collaboration w/ Charlie Parker, Coltrane & Gillespie, to his funk oriented ensembles  w/ Mike Stern, Scofield, Robben Ford, Bob Berg... lahat ng dumaan sa kanya mga naging senyor din, Chick w/ his RTF, Zawinul w/ Weather Report & Joe Zawinul Syndicate ( w/ Scott Henderson ), Tony Williams w/ Lifetime & my favorite: John Mc McLaughlin's MAHAVISHNU Orchestra.  kahit nabulyawan niya ko, bow pa rin ako sa genius nya sa music. Diba nga I even named my eldest son after him? coz he was born the day after Miles passed away... his music lives on... teka nga, nasan naba yung CD ng Aura? mapakingan nga habang naka tambay d2 sa Philmusic...

Saw the RTF reunion last saturday night @ cobb energy performing center, they were just great musicians, lenny, chick, di meola, stanley clark, played their you know what off, and they showed happiness on stage, the show was full of energy.
i was just glad to see them together, i thought it would never happen in my lifetime.

i really like the way frank gambale play
para sakin he's an all around guitarist
the way he do his music

if you wanna hear chick's guitarist na may puso, listen to scott henderson.

Yeah I have that album - the changes are the same as Coltrane's "Giant Steps" I think. Jack de Johnette was on drums.

My problem with the electric guitar ensembles of Chick is that his writing for them tends to be on the spanish / latino/ flamenco style - (I'm specifically thinking of those unison passages in RTF with DiMeola) rather than rock / funk / bluesy. Didn't quite jell with me. Chick's straightahead jazz writing is very infuenced by bluesy musicians like Monk and Bud Powell, but these are usually sax quartets or piano trios, not guitar based for some reason.

There are some good RTF compositions I like with guitar solos - funny but my favorite is "Sorceress" from the Romantic Warrior album and this was written by Lenny White, the drummer!

I have to say, he's getting too old for his technique, his rhythmic feel, harmonies, tone...everything is bad, in fairness medyo nakainom yata siya nun eh. Of course he's an amazing shredder back then!
