Both drummers have developed their own unique sound, and in my book, any musician who's able to do that earns my respect. And I'm not just talking about having a unique sound for it's own sake (I've encountered a few musicians who insist on doing something their way, because it's 'their sound', with very little regard (if at all) for the material in question), but being able to achieve that sound through diligence, and real musical situations (as opposed on insisting to play a song in 11/16 when it'll work very well in 4/4).
I'd be very honored to one day be able to play side by side any of them...
A few weeks ago I got to see Dave Weckl in action. It was a gig with Oz Noy, and he was only able to rehearse with the band the day before. He was reading charts for almost the entire duration of the gig, but his playing was so full of integrity that one couldn't really tell that he wasn't the drummer who played regularly for Oz. He played as brilliantly as if he was playing alongside people with whom he played for a long time.
Vinnie's got my vote too. His versatility, technique and musicianship is very admireable. I only got to see him play live when he played for Sting at the ULTRA. Definitely kick-ass!
