Against Me! - New Wave
« on: July 30, 2007, 04:37:22 PM »
Preface:  I'm writing this review because I had an actual religious experience after attending my first Against Me! show last night as they opened for Spoon.  I never expected so much intensity from both a band and an audience.  In a modern music landscape where Avril, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, and their ilk, the word "punk" has been so casually thrown around like it was a limp rag doll as a marketing buzzword for "edgy".  Hold on to your horses kids because definitely, Punks not dead.

New Wave is the major label debut of agit-punks Against Me!

This group used to be part of the Fat Wreck Chords label.  They've been together since since 2000 and released their very first album entitled Reinventing Axl Rose a year later.  They've released two studio records and a live album since before jumping to a major label.

This brand of punk is the real deal.  If you enjoy your music with heavy doses of politics and social discourse the likes of The Jerks, The Clash, Sleater-Kinney, or Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, then this is definitely for you.

After so many years of pretty much producing Garbage records, Butch Vig helps Against Me! reach a new level of gathering fans worldwide with New Wave.  Yes, this album may actually be one of those groundbreaking sonic assaults that Vig has also helmed for Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins in the past.

Listening to tracks like Americans Abroad or White People for Peace will rekindle your faith in the movement.  These screeds against consumerist culture, voter apathy, the Bush/Cheney expansionist agenda, and many other heavy issues are definitely the music pieces I've been looking for.  I knew that in the age of the neo-conservative Republican era, there would be brilliant protest albums.  I just didn't expect to listen to one so blistering and handsomely produced at this point in time, it's quite the surprise.

At the same time that I got this album, I had to also pick up the band's live record Americans Abroad!!! Against Me!!! Live In London!!!.  I can't contain the goldmine of ear candy that I've been experiencing since.
