you don't actually need to be a virtuoso to have the right to like prog. my brother doesn't even know how to play any musical instrument, but he loves spock's beard, and dream theater and of course EN eheheh syempre proud utol yun. :p
if you like a photograph... do you really need to understand the technicalities of the craft to appreciate a good photo? you just see it as something beautiful, or a photo that means something to you. you really don't need to know how that particular photo was taken... what lenses were used... what the settings were etc. to appreciate it.
so as far as appreciation is concerned... no amount of skill or technical know-how is needed. if you love prog... then you do.
ask ko lang kung ung mga prog eh is all about ung galing nila tumugtog....dun nila ineexpres ung filings nila?
playing prog... just like playing jazz or classical... does involve a certain amount of technical know-how and theory. but anyone who spends hours and hours of practice could achieve this... i don't even know the theory behind half the things i do, it's just a result of years and years of practicing and playing... and it sounds good and it seems to work... i can't read music... and my ear fails me now and then... but i play prog. and i play it because i love it. the theory and techniques are merely tools... to express our feelings as you say... some bands express their message through the words in their music... progressive musicians choose to accompany these words with moving textures that complement the words... be it through a sudden change in theme... or a change in time or tempo. I guess what i'm trying to say is... there are different types of expression. and in prog, we choose to explore every avenue. that way you get a clear picture of what we're trying to say.
so sino ang tunay na prog? why should it matter? i firmly believe that you don't owe anyone enough to let their opinions affect you... you make your own destiny... you walk your own path... so why should any of their opnions matter? just play music. if you play prog, alternative, pop, r&b, emo or what have you... just play with all your heart. that way you communicate with your listeners more effectively since they can see the sincerity of the music you guys do.
