Title: Razorback's Origin...and on-going saga!
Post by: ortigas on September 08, 2006, 03:12:23 PM
Razorback has been around for the past 16 years and to this day many of the fans and friends of the band still do not know how it came to be. Many think we really started when Kevin Roy became singer for the band in 1991, but in all actuality, the mayhem started way before then...

Here it is in black and white for all to read and learn from (I am keeping out the juiciest details for later):

I had met Tirso Ripoll around 1982 when I became classmates with his cousin Mike Ripoll in LSGH. Mike was my 7th Grade classmate and we started going to each others birthday parties during our pre teens. Mike is still my best friend. Kumpare ko yan. At one of these events at the Ripoll home in San Juan, Tirso walked in with his younger brother Roman (former owner of "Peligro" Bar) and he had the loudest, big mouth, I had heard! Dang! I thought to myself, "Who the F**k is this guy?" Eventually we all found out we shared the same passion for Rock music, so we hung out with each other a lot more, and into our college days we would frequent the Ripoll Beach house in Nasugbu, Batangas, as often as we could.

Even then, around 1985, we were already forming our fantasy band lineups, with Tirso and I on guitars, and various friends on the other instruments. Of course, it never came to be at the time but I had already taken guitar lessons cause I was adamant about it. I sucked on guitar, big time! My fingers were too big to fret. It never bothered me though cause I knew you did not need a lot of talent to be like "The Ramones" or "The Sex Pistols" and to me that would have been just fine. So I learned my basic chords and quit the Yamaha School of Music. Benjie Zialcita (head instructor at said school) kept trying to influence me in the right direction but somehow someway I just wanted to Rock! I did not care to learn "Romansa de Amor" but would rather shred out "Smoke on the Water". Tirso, Dave, and Louie all learned under Benj at different times. Benjie Zialcita was an awesome influence to us all as well. He played "The KKK Took My Baby Away" with Paul Horrigan and Inaki Martinez at our school gazebo for some program in my 3rd High School year and I ran out of my remedial test to see them when I heard the noise from my classroom. F**k the test! I had to see who was playing! The beat of the live drum drove me mad!

My brother David Aguirre was growing up at the time from childhood to his high school years and at first was influenced by his mothers' musical tastes which I felt were out of date. He was into Elvis and Hermans Hermits! One day, he had just gotten home from school when I popped in this "Twisted Sister" live concert video and he just flipped for Dee Snyder screaming out profanity in front of a mad, MAD California Arena audience. He said stuff like "We're filming here in Cali-f*kin'-fornia man, so don't touch the cameramen, don't hit the cameramen, and most especially, don't f**k the cameramen." Wow!!! What an impact that made on this kid’s life! From that day, Dave was attached to my record collection. He researched everything backwards, like most of you out there, and discovered the best of the best Rock n' Roll out there available to us.

Dave would ask his mom to show him some guitar chords on her acoustic guitar (played lefty but strung righty like Hendrix) and he was strumming away from that time on. That must have been at our 2nd Greenmeadows home around 1986. He was dying to get an electric guitar! Tirso on the other hand had already bought my first electric guitar, a Hondo Strat, Japan made, which I had given up on and sold him and he was learning from books and his older brother Junus. Tirso refused to start with an acoustic guitar.

At the Ripoll Beach house, Tirso came up with his first original compositions called "Hi Lo" and "May Patay sa Main Beach" which had true meaning since we once found a dead body floating up the main Tali beach and reported it to the authorities. These were mainly comedic or funny compositions but the writing was already there for Tirso. He always wrote of personal experiences...just listen to his songs and hear it for yourself.

It was at this time that I had met Pepe Smith, Sampaguita, Pepito Bosch (RIP), Billy Bonnevie, Edmund Fortuno (RIP) and many of the Pinoy Rock Legends and that really reinforced my dreams. I watched them pIay for the first time ever at Babes Romero's now defunct Electra Bar on Kalayaan Ave. in Makati with my broken leg in a cast in 1988. I wanted to be like them! It seemed at these events, everyone wanted to be with them, love them, or just say hello to these mighty Pinoy Rock Icons.

One day, when we got to talking about it, we decided we could do it, and so would have sleep-overs at my place while all the time playing our strings. Tirso and I still dreamt of the forth coming future for our fledgling band it seemed. We actually recorded our first instrumental in my room with Dave and Tirso  exchanging lead guitars played on verses of chords where I played the bass over an electronic drum track. No, no one will ever hear that. It came out alright for our first experiment so we again made new decisions as to who would play what. My friend at the time had an older bro who was selling his drum kit from the 70's (which looked like the perfect "combo" kit...gold and sparkly) so I went to their place and pretty much took it from their bodega for free....with "thank you's" to Robin himself who allowed me to steal the kit...

That was that!

I set the drums up at home that Sunday and Dave started playing "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC which I was able to keep up with. I was playing the drums! From conceptualization to fruition it seemed I could play a steady enough beat! It seemed like heaven with just Dave and I. Our parents came home from church that night and we showed ‘em what we could do......they freaked! Politely, they said, "It was nice". After their blessing from church, we gave them some hell.

The next weekend it goes without saying that we 3 got together for some jamming and we asked Junus Ripoll to come on as our first bass player even though he could play much better lead guitar than either of my boys. We kept it that way cause we knew that at least the 3 of us could work together though we actually had different musical directions with Junus. We then recruited our mutual friend Isabel Lozano (www.myspace.com/isabel) as lead singer after trying out numerous friends who thought they could sing and we finally had a garage band! We played our first official gig at the "Big Bang sa Alabang" and we were then known as "Outrider" along with some then unknowns who later made names for themselves as well. I remember the younger bro of a classmate of mine, Gino Evaristo, who was bitching that they had to go on later than their slot cause someone had cut his guitar strings. He went on to become "Color it Red's" guitar player on their first album. Sabotage is dirty business and some bands still do it today. Razorback always respected lineup scheds other than when we had "lagare" gigs which meant we had to be at another venue within a time frame. In those cases, we went on on time, or not at all.

We had our first big break when we submitted our audition tape consisting of "Stairway to Heaven" and some other classic rock songs to the Upsilon Sigma Phi- NU107 battle of the bands contest. We won over Aftermath (guitar player Sancho Sanchez of "Loquy") only because we had better song selection I think. Also, a prettier singer...hehe. Dude, they played "Can I Play With Madness" by Iron Maiden and I thought we had no chance. We got named winner and freaked! I'm sure the Upsilonians voted unanimously....

From that point, we thought that we were ready for the club scene, which at the time required three 1-hour sets. This was the show band scene we were attempting to break into so we had to be strong. We thought that with our draw of friends that we could fill up clubs but again it was the late 80's to early 90's and only "The Dawn" were filling up venues if they decided to play outside of San Miguel Beer arena events.

Isabel Lozano quit the band before we signed anything, which saved us a lawsuit, but we ended up playing at Kalye Bar on Palanca St. in Legazpi Village every Saturday with Jose Mari Cuervo for the first year and then, when we dropped him from the lineup, we continued on with Kevin Roy for the next three years. We also had many bass players from the time, Junus Ripoll was with us, to John Templo, Jody Valencia, and finally to the maestro, Louie Talan who stuck with the guys since he came into the band. It was hard but with the support of our friends we made a steady gig of it. From 1991-94 we played almost every Saturday there including Christmas holidays and Easter Breaks…. after the 1st year, we were playing about two long sets and, later, we whittled it down to 1 long-ass set at the end of the evening when the place was jam-packed. We invited our friends from other bands (The Youth, Gnash, etc…) to play warm up sets and get the jamming started in the early evening.

So, the line-up then till the recording of Hebigat Sounds Vol. 1, Razorback’s 1st album, was composed of Tirso Ripoll and David Aguirre on guitars, Louie Talan on bass, Kevin Roy on vocals and myself on drums. Those early days, the early ‘90’s, are irreplaceable and were the beginnings of the 2nd coming of the Pinoy Rock scene.

Hopefully the other guys in the band are lurkers here at Philmusic and they add on some stories to this post. That would be fun!  :D

Ayos 'to Migs. Konting "official story" pa and then we can get to "the dirt"   !

This thread should eventually be strung with the Blue Rats thread on Jazz & Blues Cafe forum -- if the other "associated" bands start theirs too, it could be a book -- "A History of Pinoy Rock and Blues"!

Continue, continue......

Everyone knows that Kev is the younger brother of Karl Roy. Karl was my classmate in grade school at OB Montessori in Greenhills. We lost touch after I left the school and moved on to La Salle GH but caught up with each other later during my college years. Karl was then singing with Advent Call. When Razorback was playing every Saturday at Kalye bar in Makati our singer then Josemari would sometimes flake out on some gigs for reasons we will not delve into here. When he would skip out like that, we'd send out the message to all our singer friends to come jam nalang with us and Karl would always come over and we'd have the best jams with fights breaking out in the middle of the crowd cause of how rowdy the kids would get. When we got rid of Josemari, we auditioned quite a bunch of guys, notably Naldy Padilla who went on to sing for Orient Pearl, and Kevin. Kevin walked in with a big squirt gun and his posse. He had the most confidence plus the willingness to rock with us and not be a diva so we decided on him to front the band and that was that!

Wolfgang started after us. Wolf and Manuel are both friends of mine. Basti was my cousins singer in their garage band, Sin City. Originally, Manuel was actually jamming with Naldy Padilla and Jay Alviar who used to drum for Advent Call and is now with the Brass Munkeys. When Manny and Wolf got together, that was it. They got Mon and Basti and they never changed a thing till the day they broke up.

Brian used to live in my cousin Jay's house and they would regularly come to our gigs and hang with us. Brian and I share the same birthday (aside from Zach Lucero) so we'd always be at each others' celebrations. Bri then was teaching drums at RJ's music school so when I left the band, he was the obvious choice to replace me.

I only recorded the first album with the guys so I really can't talk much about the other 3 albums. Yes, there are lots of hidden meanings and stories how these songs got put together.

About the 1st album cover...we used to have this guy, Uro Inocencio,  come over and he'd make drawings of us while we played. We'd tell him to make us look like cartoon wild boars playing instruments and after a few experiments, he got it right so we commissioned him to do the Hebigat cover. He was nasty screwed on shabs and so later on he was trying to get us guys to pay crazy amounts of money to buy his other cartoon work. I begged off but a few of the guys bought some. Later, we heard nalang that his girl broke his heart and he had hung himself. Dumb-ass thing to do, killing himself. He was very talented at marami namang babae dyan. RIP, Uro.

That's what doing stupid things like shabs can do... Screws up your head.  You and I've had our share, eh, kumpare?  Dang, the stupid things we did back then...

It was care of Miguel that the Breed sorta got our break to do Kalye as well.  Migs sessioned with us once at the now-long-defunct Fire & Rain on Pasay road, and he asked us if we'd like to audition to play there as well.  I remember Eddie Rocha (F&R's owner) was a jealous boss... He really wanted us to stay as playing somewhere else would mean dividing our following to see us elsewhere aside from at his place.  But audition we did and got Wednesday nights.  We attended each other's gigs regularly and became good friends in the process, even going as far as Puerto Galera on a regular basis to keep the party going... Razorback and the Breed fronted for Bon Jovi when they played here and after we were done on the first evening we went straight to Kalye for a gig!  Rocked and Rolled all night and partied every day!  Those were the days, eh, Migs?  Pitchers of rum and coke (Tanduay 5 yrs. only, please), lots of weed and cigarettes.  Miguel has since sworn off alcohol and is now apparently an ex-smoker as well.  When my daughter was born, he was the first at the hospital helping me calm my nerves and is now Louie's godfather.  He has married the girl of his dreams (Tricie G., now Tricie O.) in a civil ceremony last week and will have the church wedding here in the good ol' Pinas sometime at the end of the year.  Good for you, old friend. :)

So, let’s talk about Kalye Bar for a bit since the place also became legendary like Club Dredd, Hobbit House, Mayrics , and so many other clubs in Manila.

When Tirso and I first started going to Kalye, it was because we needed a place to go to get loaded on cheap booze before meeting all our other friends at the more expensive venues around town. At Kalye, they used to serve rum cokes and vodka tonics for just P15 in plastic cups so with just P200 (?) in your pocket, you could go get wasted really quick. This was around 1989-90. Originally, the bar was located in Mile Long but they moved it to Palanca St. in Legaspi Village until it finally closed down in 1994.

Tirso, myself, and our posse would trudge into the place, have a seat among the heavy wooden furniture and trip out on the jazz band that would be playing there every weekend. I didn’t and still don’t know much jazz but I would always request “Take 5” since the drummer would do a long drum solo in the middle of the song and they would oblige us loud kids in the audience. The bands would also have cute singers so that was another thing that kept us coming back. The place at the time was full of soccer dad’s who would sit around, shoot the sh*t, and watch some games on the TV’s. It seemed like we were the only kids hanging out at the bar.

As it normally happens with good show bands in the Philippines, they hone their skills in the clubs and when they are ready, they end up playing abroad when the 6-month, 1 year contracts come their way and so the bar had no band for a short time. Ricky Cui who was the talent manager of the place then started his own band of older guys playing Jimi Hendrix and the Doors stuff. Miyaki, Sampaguita’s guitar player at one time, was in the band too. All the more us guys would come around, get bombed, and make lots of noise.

Ricky called me up one afternoon and asked me to session with them since they had lost their drummer so there I was in Kalye, middle of the afternoon, learning songs for 4 sets I was to play that night! Bwiset! Aside from the stuff I already knew how to play, I learned about 20 songs that we just extended to fit the time span. Miyaki kept doing stuff to throw me off…like in the middle of “Smoke on the Water” he’d break into the “My Sharona” riff. He was such a character, God rest his soul.

Anyway, we pulled it off that night and since so many young folks came out to see what we were gonna do, Ricky then offered Razorback to guest with them the following week. We came in and played a set in between theirs and thanked Ricky profusely for having us on the mic which sort of pissed off Dodie King, one of the owners of the place. Dodie and Ricky had a falling out and Dodie called us to see if we were open to playing there every Saturday. Tirso and I went to the joint to have a sit down with Mr. King and as we were about to agree with the terms of the contract I got a phone call from Isabel our singer at the time. She was crying on the phone telling me that she could not do it. Damn! Bummer! We told Dodie that we then had no singer but if he would hang on a bit, we’d be back, raunchier then ever. He did.

We contacted Josemari and he was game from the get go. After a few weeks of practice we were ready and we then played the venue for the next 4 years with some lineup changes in the early days. After our debut at the club, everything snowballed. Dodie asked if we knew anyone to take the Friday night slot and I knew that Coco Jam wanted to move from Mayrics which was their home base so I went and told Rolly, Jun Lopito, Bosyo and the guys about it and they took it without batting an eyelash. Next was the week nights so I hooked up Johnny Besa and the rest of the Breed with Wednesday nights and Advent Call who did Thursday nights for about 2-3 months. They were then replaced by Prettier Than Pink and that was that! Ok, guys….your turn to spill the beans on what went on there during those years.

Thanks for sharing the story, Miguel.

It was a great read especially since I've followed the bands career during Kalye days. I remember I was 13-14 yrs old back then when I'd rush off every saturday to watch you guys. I believe we were always the youngest in the crowd everytime. One of my proudest memories was being there when Kevin announced that you guys have signed on for your first ever album. Been really proud to be there witnessing the development of the one and only band, who really shaped my music.

To this day, I have Razorback to thank for my development as a rock artist... and it's an honor when some people say that the sound of my band reminds them of Razoback. I simply say to myself, "hell yeah!" Coz you guys are my heroes.

The first time I saw Razorback was on channel7 RSVP I was 13 years old then and was begining to learn my chops on the guitar but when I saw David who was the same age as I was like, WTF! ang galing. I was blown away with all the bands playing that time on the show, I could remember, Tame the Tikbalang, and that other band who played Red Hot Chili Peppers songs with the guy who just skinned his head for the show! Ceasar Montano was also on that show and I never thought the guy could play that well too. Anyway my bandmates, all my barkada and I has always been big fans of Razorback eversince we first heard you guys, you guys are a big influence on our music even sa guitar playing ko Dave and Tirso wala pang banda dito sa pinas na nakita kong napaka tight ang chemistry. Everytime Razorback came here to Cebu palagi kaming nanonood, never missed a gig that you guys had here in Cebu. Mabuhay kayong lahat!!!!! 8)

He was such a character, God rest his soul.

ahahaha!   thats classic Miyakee! good times meng..  :D

OK. 1st (?) RSVP TV Appearance. It was our first year playing in Kalye bar and we started getting noticed by the press. “Who are these white kids playing rock n’ roll in a club on weekends?” We didn’t give a crap about our public image and we didn’t care about what other “coño” kids thought. For most of them it was really weird that we would delve into this kind of lifestyle. They always knew we were rockers but to actually start a band that was not happy to stay in the garage or college campuses was too hard for some to swallow and so we then learned whom our “real” fiends were.

I got a call from a good friend of mine, Billy Bonnevie who is one of the head honcho’s of Pinikpikan today, and he told me that Channel 7 was interested in getting the day’s new young bands to come on a variety show hosted by Dawn Z. and Ariel Ureta. We were game from the beginning. The line-up of Razorback then consisted of all us guys minus Kevin. We had the brilliant idea of stuffing our pants with socks so when we came out on screen we would have the biggest crotches! It was all a big joke to us but when we arrived at the studio Josemari was already there sitting spread legged with the most enormous crotch and all the gay beauticians and PA’s kept walking by and checking him out with shocked expressions on their faces! Mwahaha!    He thought we all meant to do it so it became an inside joke and he decided to tough it up and stick it out rather than remove it and get discovered as a fake.

Most of the bands that night played cover songs since no one had recordings or singles for that matter. Bazurak, fronted by Ritchie Recto, played a Red Hot Chili Peppers song and he was having a hard time with the lyrics so after rehearsal he wrote them on his arm. While hanging around and getting ready I had gone into the bathroom and there was Bazurak hovering around their bass player, trying to shave his head into a Mohawk. They were having a bitch of a time doing it as he had so much hair. I suggested we buzz it first then start shaving with a razor. His head had numerous poknats after the process from them running a razor straight through and being really rough at it. Tito Fritz Infante, the director of the show, was so pissed at them for doing that. “Que feo!” How ugly! He kept saying. They went on and performed their Chili Peppers song with Ritchie staring at his forearm for the lyrics the entire time! That bass player is none other than Nathan “Satan”    Azarcon who went on to become one of the best and most notorious bass players around with Rivermaya, Kapatid and today with Bamboo.

Razorback played a song called “Burning Tree” by a band of the same name which no one knew. They had one album under Epic Records which to my knowledge was never followed up. Their drummer, Doni Gray, is actually Doni Castello, a Filipino by birth. His brother Titong did a stint in the local movie scene back in the Pinas. We played a lot of Burning Tree cause it was hard rockin' and most folks had never heard that stuff so they just thought they were our songs.  8-[

So there we are kickin’ it on stage in front of all those lights and cameras. Dave was a chubby little kid…Louie had very short hair and did not look like “Cousin It” yet…Tirso was already in glamour mode complete with cowboy boots…I was about 260 pounds heavy (TABA) with my hair tied in a pony tail…and Josemari had his stuffed crotch! Whattaband! Needless to say, we got invited to perform on the show twice more before it got cancelled in the mid-90’s.

Whoops...there goes my memory. That was the 2nd time we played on the show. I still have that on VHS. The first time I think we played "Smoke on the Water".

Let's not forget that Bazurak's drummer was a kid named Mark Escueta. He's with some big band now, hmm starts with "R' or something :)

Migs, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was an early 90's American Standard strung with 10's. I think he eventually had it stripped of the paint, had it refinished with tung oil, stuck a tortoise shell pickguard on it, and strung it with 11's. That's the way it was by the time Miguel and he joined the Blue rats.

Pinakalikot niya sa akin 'yung gitarra na 'yan one day dahil umaangal siya na ang hirap i-bend 'yung 11's. When he handed it to me na-shock ako -- ang taas ng action sa nut/1st fret -- sort of what you'd expect to see at the 5th fret!!!   Sabi niya he liked the action pretty high 'cuz he'd do a lot of bends at the first and second frets, so iniwan ni Arie yung action that high. Binaba ko yung nut slots niya about halfway and he was fine. Did the same thing on his blue PRS Custom and that's about the way those guitars stayed after he left the Rats -- still pretty high off the 1st fret, but in tune for open chords and bendable.

The dude had fingers of steel.  8)

It could turn into a Kalye thread, but then again, the headline would be misleading. How about we start one bro? You do the honors…

Here’s some of the kalokohan that went on at Kalye though…

Dyanni…remember the time I was sitting outside the front of the San Miguel Building beside Kalye where all the mysterio used to happen in between sets? Well there I was with a bunch of the Razorboys just smokin’ and drinkin’ when all of a sudden we hear a crunching sound across the street and I look up and see the someone backed into my car! Dang! I jumped up, shouted “P*tang ina! Kotse ko yan!” and I launched my beer bottle a hundred feet in the air only for it to crash right beside the car that hit mine. I start running across with the boys in tow, all ready for a big mess, when out of the car comes who else but DyanniBee saying “P*tang ina! Who threw that?!”    Mwahaha!!!    “Oh, Sh*t!” I said. “Sorry man…I didn’t know it was you. Go ahead and bump my car as much as you want!”

Or when Mad-dog Manny first got his wireless system for his guitar and in the middle of The Breed’s set he goes running out of the club during a song and no one knows where the hell he went but the lead guitars still played on…

Or another of The Breed’s nights, when me and my boys were pissed out of our heads, and we spotted Charlie Y’s blue VolksWagen Beetle quietly parked outside so we decided to carry the front end of it and put it up on the sidewalk! Man, Charlie was pissed! We kept saying we were just kidding and would put it back down for him but he was just grumbling mad…

Or the best one…

We all had long hair down to our butts and Charlie grew his hair out but he had the curliest hair so it was so big and bushy that we used to call it “Santo Niño” hair-do. He also had a beard. So one day, I’m hanging outside Kalye with some friends, the guard and the vendor who used to come every weekend and get bombed out (I forget his name), and here comes Charlie with the hair and all wearing white/silver spandex pants!!! So I shout “Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts!”  :P  Mwahahahaha! He never wore those pants again…

So there was Razorback playing away at Kalye bar and Wolfgang's first bar gig was at this place on the corner of Makati Ave. and Buendia, which is now a 7-11, that was called "San Tropez". It was a small place but we would go there on Friday nights to hang out with them. After a couple of months Manuel's friend's dad wanted to know more about this place so he ventured out there one week night and apparently this man strikes up a conversation with him. In the process, the guys asks him what brought him there and Manny's friend's dad says "Well, this is where Manuel and his rock band plays on the weekends." The guy then says, "But, this is a gay bar!"

Some time later, "Pasta on the Piazza" aka "Weekends Live" opened up in the Atrium building on Makati Ave. and Wolfgang became regulars there. Razorback played there numerous times too. The early days there were horrendous! I would come in and see the equipment and would want to cry! They had the smallest practice amps for the guitars, the most terrible PA, and a rag-tag, multi-colored piece of junk drum kit.   I would ask the talent coordinator what the heck was that and he would just say something like "Ayaw mo nyan? Marami'ng drums?" Leche!  :x They were all pieced together from numerous other drum kits. They brought the surviving pieces of crap.

Sure enough, on the first few songs, nabutas yung kick drum! Haaaay buhay. So we run to Kalye, get mang Tony to bring us to his amo's studio off of Rizal Ave and we pick up their kick drum, run back, set up, and continue on with the show anyway. Man, that sucked.

But we came back anyway and played there many more times nonetheless and we met a whole slew of new bands that were also coming out of the woodwork such as Manang Damo, who later had a minor hit with the song Pautang Ina, Pedro's Cannabis, and so many more.

Later, we branched out and played Mayrics and Club Dredd in QC. It was the Dredd in Timog and it was hard to get in there. For one thing, they branded us as "Makati boys" and they did not like seeing us come in there and rocking their house. But with diligence and perseverance, we finally became accepted in that circle as well. We played at that 2nd floor venue a few times then it moved to EDSA where it lived out it's life span.

At EDSA's Dredd, we became friends with so many musicians and fans and had many wonderful years of playing there too. Man, they had the smelliest bathroom!!! Di'ba, Patrick? That's where the Razorboys also discovered the Adios Motherf*cker...one of the most mean-ass versions of that drink I have ever had in my life. If I had 3 of those I was down for the count.  #-o

Mayrics on the other hand had the smallest stage with a post right in the middle which blocked some line of sight. We used to wonder how Coco Jam would fit up there with Rolly on vox, Jun on guitar, Rico on bass, Ike on keyboards, Bosyo on drums, and Girlie and Em on backing vox! Sometimes they even had Heli on 2nd guitar...Hanep! Razorback didn't number as many so we had it better but it was tight anyway. During those early years of ours, bata pa si Eric yung anak ng may-ari, so he wouldn't be around and I only really got to know him when I was already playing with the Breed in '97-'98 and later, Battery's first incarnation which was composed of myself, Michael Turner, and Johnny Besa.

More to come soon...

Charlie Y. is now the lead singer of the Spirit of '67, but he moonlights on occasion with his House Rockers band.  I heard that they don't gig much anymore because Spirit's manager is a jealous one.

Gosh, Migs... How can I forget backing up into your car?  Marlette and I had just started going out then (we've now been together 13 years and have two kids, the first of whom is Migs' godchild), and I was driving her old Isuzu Gemini with some of the blackest tint you ever saw.  Backed right into Migs' car, and slowly!  You can imagine the crunch.  Next thing I know there's a bottle that lands close to the front of the car.  Nice shot, Migs... Stopped me dead in my tracks.

And Manny's wireless.    How many times did I threaten to lock him outside every time he ran out to see how loud it actually was outside?  Come to think of it, I think we DID lock him out once, but did he learn his lesson?  Nooooooooooooooooo...     There's once we played at the food court of Robinson's Cubao and he ran up the escalator pa just to check out the range...  He got far enough away that there was a delay in his playing as the sound got to him late.  How much did you spend in batteries for the years you had that , dude?  One per performance, I believe.  :?

Pasta on the Piazza, a.k.a. Weekends Live, the first incarnation.  Great and not-so-great memories there... Best one was when right in the middle of a set the lights go out!  But Charlie, ever the showman, quieted the crowd down and we sang American Pie, a capella.  The crowd sang along as if nothing went wrong.  After that, we continued into You've Lost That Lovin Feelin.  Quite a show.  Not-so-great memory number one?  We had just come from another gig and were tired, plus I was already ill-tempered from all the aural abuse and having to help lug Manny's Marshall half-stack through three other gigs (tama ba, boys?).  Someone introduces the Breed and next thing I know there's this female voice at the table next to me that screams, "THE BREED SUCKS!!!" Of course she was drunk and her friend nice enough to apologize for her, but I was inconsolable.  I turned to Manny and hissed, "Dude, tonight you can play as loud as you want."  Manny was like a kid in a candy store when I said that!  Sure enough, everyone went home that night with ears ringing for at least a couple of days.

But enough of us!  This is supposed to be a Razorback thread!  For me, the definitive recording will always be Hebigat Sounds Vol. 1.  Play it loud enough on headphones and it sounds just like the band did playing in Kalye with the listener sitting front row center.

One memory stands out about Razorback at Kalye... Second or third set and EVERYONE is wasted, including the band.  David staggering about like he's going to puke, and all of a sudden he does just that... Over his shoulder and in the middle of a solo, which he continues til he's done! Now THAT'S showmanship!    :D

Here's a pic of Louie Talan and I from the time when The Breed and Razorback opened for Bon Jovi in 1993 at the Rizal Baseball Stadium taken by Dolly Dy-Liaco, wife of then Breed's drummer, Larry. Thanks a ton for the pic, Dolly...

Tico Torres, their drummer, came out in the afternoon of the first day to check out what was going on and so I approached him and asked him if he would sign my shirt (the same one I'm wearing in the pic) and he said "Sure, man. My pleasure." As he was getting done signing it, Louie Talan comes up and says "Hey, Tico, you're really BADUY man!" and Tico turns to Louie, shaking his hand and says, "Hey, thanks a lot!"     We were all holding our laughter in as hard as we could!  :P

This was a few months after we had also opened for Metallica along with Advent Call at the Ultra Football field...

I loved how Rene would tune the drums on Fri then we'd play on Sat and they'd sound awesome! I also remember when we started playing at Kalye Dave was still drinking Mango juice. When we left, he was at a pitcher of Rum Coke a night! Then again, so were the rest of us. If you notice the cover of the Hebigats album, that is exactly what the Kalye set up looked like. You can see the pitchers.....crazy man... but, there's so much more........

You saw that, huh? That was only a few weeks ago. Playing straight into a 100-watt Marshall combo amp. We've got a blues thing going in Cebu with Blues Bonanza. That's a real jam band. We hardly ever rehearse!

And on other topics...

Didn't Charlie wear his spandex threads at one of The Breed's gigs at Dredd (EDSA)? I remember that one.

John, I'll be in Manila on Thursday night. My brother's father-in-law just passed away so I'll be visiting at Loyola Memorial Chapels on EDSA. I'll call you when I get to Makati. I'll leave for Cebu on Saturday. But I'll be back again on Sept 18-21 and Sept 25-30. Wierd schedule. Work-related! We should have a jam and a bike ride! Too bad I don't have a bike over there though. Unless someone is selling one real cheap... hmmm...

I might bring over the Carvin for repairs too.

God bless!

When Razorback got the news that we were to open for Metallica in 1993 we were thrilled sh*tless! Patrick Pulumbarit had something to do with that and he went on to become the manager of Wolfgang at one point and many other big bands including Greyhoundz. That was like a dream come true us, opening for a major international act, and also being Metallica fans. Aside from fronting for an awesome band, we were going to play in front of more than 20,000 of our kababayans so we prepared some pinoy rock classics to kick out the jams. No, we had no originals that we’d play regularly yet at that time.

We arrive at the venue, the Ultra football field, with some friends in tow and were given our patches to stick onto ourselves. We were hanging around the bleachers, having beers in the afternoon, and listening to the roadies sound check the equipment. T*ng Ina! It was loud and clear from where we were perched.

After a bit we decide to go down to the stage and see what’s up and when we got there, this humungous biker looking guy with a big beard, glasses and a parrot tattoo on his calf comes up to our friend with the cameras and says, “Where are you going with that, little lady?” and Katz says, “Uh…I’m with the band.” The guy goes, “The band huh? And who might you be?” So we try to cheerfully say “We’re Razorback. We’re the opening act.” He then says, “So where are your patches???” and I pull mine out and say “Here!” So he gets loud and says, “Well put ‘em on!” And put ‘em on we did…right away. Hehe.

We later learned his name was Bob and he was the coolest roadie out there. He was head roadie at that. Apparently he had been around the world with some of the biggest acts in rock and roll.  Months later, when we got the opening slot for Bon Jovi at the Rizal baseball stadium, we were sitting in the bleachers having a few and checking out the scene while they were setting up the stage and we spot this huge guy on the stage and I noticed he had a tattoo on his calf so I say “Isn’t that Bob? It is!!!” and we start running to the stage screaming “Bob! Bob! Hey man!” and he looks at us with that face that says, “Oh no…not you again.” He greeted us warmly and we did promise to be good boys and not be in anybody’s way. He ended up on the cover of the tabloids, in the middle of the stage with a huge 2*4 threatening anyone who came near, which featured the riot that went on since Bon Jovi cut their set short cause of the heavy rains. I think Tirso brought him a copy the next night which made him chuckle at the notoriety.

So back to Ultra…

I think we were all so nervous of what was to go down that night that we all had our baon of toma and whatnot but we saw that they had a couple of huge coolers of beer for Metallica too and we would grab some from there every so often.

Finally we were told that it was time and so they told us to go set up. Once we set foot onstage, the throngs of people just roared and it made all my hair stand on end. I was sh*tting bricks but was giddy as well. When we nodded to say we were set, they shut the lights in the entire arena. Damn! Whew! “Here we go!” I thought. I did the opening drum lines of “Nadapa sa Arina” by the Juan Dela Cruz Band…blag-dug, blog-dug, blug blugudud, bang! All the lights went up and the thousands were going nuts! Wow, what can I say…it was magic! All of us in Razorback were just staring at each other in disbelief while playing the material on auto-pilot. We had such a blast! We kept saying afterwards that this was what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives.

Having finished our short set, I ran off to the car with my other kumpare Jay Ortega to calm my nerves. We were parked down in back of the stage. When we got back, we joined our bro’s and grabbed more beer from the coolers then just went into the throng of people, just walking back and forth in the middle sections of the audience. People kept shouting at us “Razorback! Galing!” and they’d give us some of their booze and pass us their joints. My wife tells me that this was the first time she had ever seen me in person. She was still very young and she was with her older sister in the crowd.

Later, when Jason Newstead was doing his bass solo, Jay and I went backstage again to partake of the band beer. We grabbed the last 2 cans of San Miguel Beer and were watching the show from the back. Lars came off the drum kit and went straight to the coolers and was digging in there then he stood straight up and screamed “Where the f*ck’s the beer?!?!”   Jay and I put the last 2 cans we were holding under our shirts and marched back to the car for more smokes while Lars fumed. Mwahaha!   We finished Metallica’s beer! Someone was sent to go get more.

Rioting broke out where the middle sections were throwing their monoblock chairs into the expensive ticket sections. Fights broke out. The bleachers were doing the “wave”. Metallica played for like 3 hours! Whatta night! What a blessing to be there. What a great honor it was to have shared the stage with the biggest heavy metal band in the world…

Sadly, no. Only Jason Newstead came out in the afternoon to check out the equipment and talk with the road manager and I think only Patrick Pulumbarit was lucky enough to meet him at that time as he was bullsh*tting with the road manager guy right then and there. Remeber, we had to be on our best rocker behaviour and not get in anybody's way...or maybe they'd kick our butts outta there.

The one and only! Not too sure about Craig Ross on the album but it sure was Marc Ford on guitars who I was priviledged to see with the Black Crowes last year at the Long Beach Blues Festival in California. Went with Dave, Wrissa, Wolf, Shelley and Chris and we jumped the baricade during the encore and got as close to the stage as we could. Pucha, parang mga bata pa rin!   I don't have the liner notes of the Burning Tree album (album is on my iPod and CD is with my stash in Manila) and I can't remember the bass players' name. May have been Craig Ross. Tirso has a copy so maybe he can shed some light. It was Marc Ford, the bass player, and Doni Gray (the Pinoy). Doni and Marc did the vocals...

Regarding the story of Jason Newstead rocking out in Club Dredd, I saw the pictures of that jam in Eddie Boy Escudero's files. He looked pretty intense as always (Jason, not Eddie Boy). I wonder if Eddie Boy still has those.

I don't have an interesting Kalye stories to tell, other than the tale that my pogijazz band used to play in that place when it was still called "Cafe Alvarado" (for the young 'uns, C. Palanca St in Makati used to be called Alvarado St.) . Our pogijazz bass player was Carlos Balcells and back then he still had real hair   !!

But I do remember seeing Razorback (and Wolfgang) back in 1995 as two of the bands that Dixie Mabanta booked for the "Mexicali Saturday Blues Night" every Sat at Mexicali Alabang. I was with the "Mexicali House Band" (that later became the Mexicali Blues Band) we had Joey Puyat and Walter Wirth of Petrified Anthem on guitars and it was a blast. Every week the house band did one set and then one of the bands Dixie booked would go on. This would be Jun Lopito, KO Jones, Blue Rats (I think! Y'know I cant recall but given the timeline they must've played), Advent Call (with Karl Roy on vocals) and Razorback did a couple of weeks. Everybody ended the night really drunk and the poor waiters would mop up afterwards, the pristine fastfood restaurant was in shambles every Saturday. That's the first time I saw Tirso with his Flying V, and I remember Dave was just a wide eyed little bugger who always ogled Joey Puyat's playing during his solos. At one point David was thoroughly inebriated and yelled out "Joey Puyat is God!!!" to no one in paticular. Well that's my Razorback flashback. 8)

The Metallica gig was intense...I was there with everyone's kid to babysit!!! Buddjie na anak ni Korics, Clapton anak ni Sammy da spy...and when we got there I think 99 percent of the people from Clubb Dredd and makati were there so the line was long as hell.  I grabbed the boys and walked down the line saying hello to the people I knew til near the gates found a bunch of the dreddies...Odel and GP Evaristo et al and made singit nalang there.  They were getting completely blasted and it was mid afternoon coz they knew they couldn't bring in booze so I smuggled in the rum coke in the colemans.
Anyway, by the time Razorback played (and I remember Nadapa sa arina!)  we all went wild with pride and envy. I saw clapton's eyes light up like a christmas tree watching Dave...I knew then we had another young kick ass musician in our stable.  Funny, his dad is one of the best around and it took seeing you guys fronting for Metallica to make it real, I guess.  We all sang at the top of our lungs...it was surreal watching you guys play Juan dela Cruz on the same stage as Metallica.  That was historical, pare.

raysorbex@hotmail.com.....yeah, I remember that one. That was me man. I don't think its still working.

Man, I remember the Metallica gig. That was amazing. They didnt hang out too much because one of their tour managers was left in hospital in Singapore or Hawaii the day before or something like that. They were all bad trip. They rocked out though. I remember that the stage was wet from the rain and I fell on my ass at one point. Labo! I told the stage manager to warn the band about the slippery stage and he sez [strawberry] 'em! Everybody shares the same stage.' . That was pretty cool. I got to talk to Jason Newstead when he was at Club Dredd. I had just come from dinner with Santana, they were in town at the same time! I didnt get to jam as I got electrocuted when I held the railing outside Dredd. I was pretty shaken up so I sat at the bar beside some guy and had a drink. It turned out to be Wally Chamsay, head of Sony Music. So I spent the next couple of hours recovering with him and at the end of the night wound up getting a record deal. Funny how things work, eh?

We're playing at Metrowalk in Pasig for a Jack Daniels show. Mga 10pm siguro. Hope you guys can make it. Cheers!

raysorbex@hotmail.com.....yeah, I remember that one.

Labo! I told the stage manager to warn the band about the slippery stage and he sez '**** 'em!

Nice to hear from you !!!

One and the same. No, he never pursued playing in a band. They were all best friends from their neck of the woods and would jam at the Mari house. The guys I actually jammed with that night were the Valencia brothers, Jody and Leo, and Basti. MigMari never really practiced. Hehehe... :)

70s bistro is the perfect venue for razorback. doon they morph into monsters eh! not sure about 300...exagg...150 siguro :) but you're right about the neighbor. i was in the gig where drt was playing before razorback when all of a sudden this angry neighbor jumps onstage and starts cursing the band. what a maniac! but in true rock fashion, the guys played on  :)

Title: Kalye!!!!!!!! Razorback!!!!!!
Post by: maxzboy on September 15, 2006, 05:05:38 PM
Hey Migs! Finally I get to share my great memories of kalye and Razorback! I was just in 3rd yr highschool when I started to go to Kalye so forgive me if I get some of the details wrong (and pls do correct me if Im wrong).

Well anyway there I was in veering towards the punk scene when all of a sudden I find myself in Kalye! My sister told me about the place and said, "May band dun pag sabado maingay, parang yung mga trip mo". At the time, I got my music fix only at those punk concerts held in different covered courts around the Metro, So finally a nearby place w/ a regular slot for a rock group. (Dredd was way too far for me at the time) Astig tlga 100 bucks gets you a "temporary tatoo" that says "CHECKED" on your wrist, and a piece paper that could eventually get you either 1 sisig and a beer, 2 beers and an order of fries, or a beer and a burger. Man I must've tried every combination that my Php100 consumable charge could get. I even had a burger once on pandesal coz apparently the kitchen ran out of buns! Php 150 lng ok na weekend ko, that already included around 5 sticks of smokes and my cab fare pauwi!

Razorback got me started on rumcoke too, literally! As a fan I was curious on what they where drinkin, and had to try it out for myself (thinking maybe if I drink this [gooey brown stuff], I get to be as good as them!  :D) I still have those cardsuit drink stirrers at my house today! Hahahaha. But damn it when they hiked the consumable charge to 150, the rumcokes got even smaller  :(

The first time I entered Kalye was literally like a scene from a movie, they were playing "Born to be Wild" when I walked in, the very first song I heard them play live. Cool talaga! At the time the band was set up near the door, you wont see them if you peep in from the outside but once your in, poota magugulat ka, katabi mo pala yung banda sa right mo! (they changed the floor set-up sometime afterwards, the area got a bit bigger, transferred the band to the opposite side of the place).
I can still remember those Sheffield equipped Peavey amps on top of beer crates, The Tama drums that always had that distinctive crack/prack sound of the snare. To this day I still hold Kalye as the club which has the best sound ever. I think it was a guy named Mang Tony who was always at the control tweaking stuff to make sure they sound good. The gear, Louie's Ibanez Bass, Tirso's famous flying V, and sometimes he'd bring out a strat which I believe was made from parts of different guitars,  Dave's Les Paul, both axemen would always have a Wah pedal, one time I saw Tirso throw in a Boss Phaser in his set-up, but most of the time it was just a wah pedal then plugged straight to those Peaveys. Kevin . . .  well Kev had a notebook he would sometimes refer to for the lyrics. :D
Dave wore in brown LA Gear Shoes, Migs in Nikes, Kev I think wore Asics and Tirso and Louie always had boots on! And the shirts! Man I was always drooling when I saw their cool shirts! among others the notable ones were Tirso's apetite for destruction shirt and rolling stones shirts, mig's yellow "the who/tommy" shirt, louie had those metallica shirts (as depicted in the hebigat album cover) Man those were the days! Everybody would have either a beer or a rumcoke near them and Dave would have what I thought at the time was a screwdriver but turns out it was really just mango juice! I remember saying "[apple] pare foreigners pala tumutugtog tsaka tumatambay dito, buti naman 100 lang."  Then they would sing Laki sa Layaw, " Wow sikat din pala tong kantang to sa US, alam na alam nila ah." Then during set breaks I would hear them cursing in tagalog, "Aba ayos, ang galing pala magtagalog nitong mga to! Parang pinoy na talaga" Hahahaha!  :D

The songs! We always thought Pepe the Hepe was from JDLC till hebigat came out, these guys made pinoy rock sound so heavy and cool, and I think most of the people today learned to appreciate Pinoy classic rock solely because of Razorback, I know I did! Palengke, Beepbeep, Pagbabalik ng Kwago, Laki sa Layaw, Harina, Black Dog!! (actually it was Kagatan . .  Blak Dug Blak dug . . . . ) Hahahahaha!  :D
Other covers, Slowride, Flowerchild, Burning Tree, the real Black Dog, War Pigs, Sunshine of Your Love, Steppenwolf, Jumpin Jack Flash among others, and sometimes they would even do Sandman and Nirvana's Breed. The jams and guest bands: Gnash, The Breed, Bonehead, The Youth, Rizal Underground, Aftermath (Iron Maiden grabe plakadong plakado!!!!!) and of course Wolfback and Razorgang nights wherein they would have 2 kits for Migs and Wolf so they could pound simultaneously and Manuel would join in as a third guitarist as well. Migs was the only drummer I saw who could walk in the bar with his leg in a cast, walking aided by a pair of crutches but would still sound the same when sitting behind the drums. Akala mo tuloy he was faking his injuries eh!
Migs, was it really that hot behind the kit, or did you just put the fan their to get that cool "drumming against the wind" look? Hehehehe 8)

Set breaks you can find most of the people having a smoke outside (on the spot where Gweilos is right now) that was like the designated smoking area (although at the time you could still smoke indoors in makati) and every once in a while you'd see some guys in a row pissing on what used to be an empty lot in front of Kalye. It was so funny coz one time somebody shouted "Wow Hagibis!!!!!" while we were taking a leak. The bouncers were pretty cool too, forgot their names though but I think the one with the curly hair (Jolly I think is his name) is some sort of magician/illusionist now.

I think what made Kalye great as a venue was the fact that the band was enjoying themselves as much as the crowd did, it was an intimate set up but still had enough space when the kids would want to rock out and go wild. Another thing I remember about Kalye was that everybody I brought there to see Razorback came back at least twice to see them again, and all had great comments for the band.

I jope I didnt bore you guys with this post, but when I read this thread it really brought back a trunkfull of memories from the old days!
Thanks Migs! Im still looking for our old kalye pics!

Max

Hey Macs boy! Salamat sa mga kwento...you hit the spot with alot of your memories. The stage setup though started out on the far end, then by the door later on, then some time later it went back to the far end. Yes, it was Mang Tony who always kept us sounding great!  :) Jolly wasn't one of the bouncers. He just pretended to be one, the illusionist that he is. The goons up front were Bombi and Dino. Dino went on to become head goon of Wolfgang. They were friends of ours and when the management said they needed help controlling the rowdy folks we presented them and they were hired on the spot...scary looking folks that they were.  8)

...and I didn't have a cast on but was marching around nga with those crutches for a month or two and damned if my busted left leg was going to stop me from drumming. All I had to do was put it on the hi hat pedal and I was good to go! Hehehe... :D Of course the electric fan was for the Michael Jackson wind effect!

Oh man, I'm loving this thread!  Keep 'em coming!  Thanks a lot, Miguel, for sharing all these stories.  You guys can write one whole book about all of this!

This thread sure brought back lots of my high school memories.  David Aguirre and I were batchmates in LSGH (HS '96).  Back then, he was one of the coolest dudes in school.  At such a young age, he's already the kick-ass guitar player of a kick-ass rock band.  And he's one of the guitar gods in school.  I am privileged to have met him and hung out with him, and even jam with him on some occasions.

My musician friends and I often jam Razorback songs.  Even when I entered college, I still met new musician friends who like playing Razorback tunes.  I enjoy grooving along to your music, whether I'm behind the drumkit or when I'm just chilling out, listening to Hebigat Sounds Vol. 1.

Thanks to Razorback for all the memories, and for inspiring rockers like me.  8)

You said it man...that was one crazy chick! You know, her name wasn't even Eunice. That was what she used to call the doll she used to carry around in her purse. She would flash the doll in your face and say, "Say hello to Eunice." "Kiss Eunice." Whattafreak! Introduced to the band by the good old Dino B. What the f**k was he thingking?!?!

She once jumped into our group of friends standing in a nice pass d' duchie circle and threw her drink dead center on my chest shouting, "You f**king me!" I wanted to kill her pero babae sya, kaya 'di ko pinatay. So I yell at her, "Go to hell!", to which she responds, "Hell you also!" Ayuz!

Having said that, her comment reminds me of Apa interviewing a BB. Pilipinas finalist in the question and answer portion:

Apa: If you were to lose one of your five senses -- sight, smell, hearing, taste, or touch -- which one would it be and why?

Finalist: My eye.

Apa (visibly shocked): Oh really? Can you tell us why?

Finalist (looking particularly pa-cute): Ummm..... because I have a beautiful eye.

Wow labo. (One eye?????!!!!)

Speaking of Dino B., I met him again a couple of years back at the LTO on Shaw boulevard when I was getting my old motorcycle registered.  He was working as one of the stencil guys, sort of an official "fixer."  He remembered me as soon as he saw me and proceeded to bend my ear about the good ol' days.  He's still as friendly (and a bit scary looking) as anyone remembers.  And who could forget him, everyone's favorite roadie-slash-bouncer, who worked with Razorback, Wolfgang and a few other mentionables?  He does miss the old days and told me he'd love to work at that again.

If any of y'all are ever at the LTO on Shaw Boulevard near Hopia (Jose Rizal College... I mean that in the most affectionate way possible as I spent a summer there and made really good [if a bit strange] friends), give a hello to ol' Dino for me.  Can't miss him... Heavyset, dark skinned, curly hair and a warm smile.   :)

hey guys, huge Razorback fan here! grabe di na ako nakatrabaho sa kakabasa ng buong thread hehe, you've all had a lot of experiences and i'm pretty sure that you've had a blast going through all of them. ang unang-unang pangtest ko lagi ng overdrive pedal sa music stores eh "Payaso" or "Giyang" hehe major influence ang music ng Razorback sa playing style ko :)

i got to watch Razorback in '99 at Gotham and Jekyll and Hyde in Manila. i used to drink a lot back then, but i've enjoyed every single second of watching you guys play :) naalala ko pa dati, first time ko nakakita ng guitar slide na ginamit with dirty/distorted tone.. si Tirso yun! pero the best pa rin yung "YOUTHSTOCK" gig ninyo sa Ayala Alabang, nagwala lahat ng tao when Razorback started to play and ang gulo nung moshpit sa harap hehe sumama ata ako dun, di ko na maalala. ang nangyari lang nga was after Razorback's set, the people were all tired kaya wala nang masyadong nagrock-out when the final band, Wolfgang, was up and ready to play :? :?

Grabe ang haba na ng thread. This is nice, the good old Kalye dayze memories! I remember the 1st time I met you guys through my brother and Dino. They would sneak me into Kalye cause they needed a ride going there and after the gig everybody else would ride inside the car and would stop over at Migs' place in Greenhills to drink some more. Paano kaya nagkakasiya ang 10 tao sa station wagon? Basta lasing walang pakialam makarating lang sa paroroonan  Dami nating pinuntahan niyon. I also remembered going to Pasay at the Bosch compound, playing the bongos, everybody was soooo stoned.

Memories talaga...EVERYONE ended up in Pasay.  Which was a good thing coz i always made it home.  Though there was this one time everyone just disappeared and left me in Kalye with no one else but Boy Moro...on the same night that Jay (drummer) crashed Moroski's bike.  I was ready to cab it but he wouldn't let me and we ended up crashing in pasay road just outside that disco, of all places.  I still am grateful that Tirso drove by and forced Boy to just get in the car and he drove us home.  Haaay.  Sober ako ulit nun

Kwento naman tunkol sa Bon Jovi!

I'll start....

We got the call again from Renen de Guia of Top 40 t-shirts to open for Bon Jovi naman. 2 nights! Yahoo! We were once again so excited to hit the arena scene and didn't really care if it was Bon Jovi.   Hehe. We got the slot and were paired to do it with The Breed who were just as excited to do it too.

I already mentioned that little story about when Tico came out to check out the scene. That was absolutely precious! Louie Talan is [grape]!!! ...and I mean that with love. Hahaha!

During Bon Jovi's set on the 2nd night, Jolly V, the magician, was taking the drinks from the coolers back stage and he would run out into the audience and offer them to the cute girls who were squished in among the crowd, tight as sardines. He would say "Coke for a kiss!", and the guy got tons of kisses from girls who he didn't know. Rock and Roll and loose morals....aahhhhh...

Back to the first night, we, Razorback, were playing our short set and it was so overwhelming to be there in front of more people than the Metallica gig. This was at the Rizal Baseball stadium and that place is huge! Most of those folks only got to see and hear about 7 songs from Bon Jovi since it was storming and there was fear of getting electrocuted on stage so they cut the set short with apologies but to no avail. The crowds started rioting!!! What a mess that turned into. Good thing Bob was there to take care of the stage and the equipment.

During our opening set we did about 4 songs. Confession time: during our rendition of "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, which by that time I had played hundreds of times, I stopped playing too early at the ending jam!!! F*ck! All the guys turned to face me, still strumming away, and I had just stopped playing thinking I was at the end of the song! Shet! Hehehehe. Not good. Buti nalang there was a second night pa which we flawlessly did.

Kwento pa dyan, Tirso!

P.S. on the Bon Jovi gig...hehehe.  :)

Even before it became dark, I already noticed that they placed two of the metal garbage drums one on each side of the catwalk leading to the stage, and I asked about them cause they had the round police lights rigged on top of them. Apparently they were for the big explosion which was to happen during "Living on a Prayer" yata.

Jolly the magician and most of the guys were watching the action from backstage and I was keeping an eye on those drums cause I did not want to be anywhere near them when they went off. Hehe. Later in the set of Bon Jovi during their hit song, the lights/siren above the garbage drums lit up and I knew it was going to blow up at any moment so off I went into the crowd, trying to get as far away as I could. Jolly did not even take notice that they were lit or if he did, he did not know they were going to blow up so he stood right by them.   Hahahaha! They hit the big bagsakan in the song and the last bagsak had an enormous explosion to go along with it! When I next saw Jolly, he looked like those cartoon characters look when they get too near an explosion (minus the powder burns).    Talagang hilo sya! The guys were asking him if he was ok and he just kept going, "Ha? HA???" while rubbing his ears! Totally shell-shocked! Beauty!!!

Labo! I told the stage manager to warn the band about the slippery stage and he sez '**** 'em!

Another memorable 70s show was when Brian got sick and Mike Dizon played drums for the hogs. Later on nag-jam na rin si Brian. Not as crowded as that other night but the beer was warm because people were guzzling them down before they could get cold.

I heard Patrick Pulumbarit called Mario of Gweilos to do their 16th anniversary show at Eastwood on Oct 21st. Looking forward to that! That should be fun.

around and getting ready I had gone into the bathroom and there was Bazurak hovering around their bass player, trying to shave his head into a Mohawk.

Let's not forget that Bazurak's drummer was a kid named Mark Escueta. He's with some big band now, hmm starts with "R' or something :) :)

Mark wasn't the only Bazurak alumnus to join Rivermaya. Jayjohn sessioned for them for short while after Bamboo left, then he joined Teeth. Don't know what he's up to now.

Junjie Lerma naman is now the lead guitar of the Radioactive Sago Project.

Later, we branched out and played Mayrics and Club Dredd in QC. It was the Dredd in Timog and it was hard to get in there. Oh, yeah! We got stuck in the traffic leaving the place. Manuel Legarda was in my car among other friends and he would open the window, sit outside the car and scream, "Thank you, Manila! We love you!" and folks walking the streets would be like "Oh! Si Bon Jobi!"

Tirso! Do you know of anyone who has that video that they (the producers) were filming at the Full Moon Fest in Puerto Galera where we played along with Spy, Coco Jam, Jun Lopito, and some others? I have home video of us doing "Giyang". Man! That crowd was awesome. Jumping around, climbing the stage, and slamming, that it looked like a huge sand-storm...

It's a shame that video was never televised.

One of the beauties of being in a band is that you get to travel around for free! Wally Gonzalez and Pyaps Smith were just here for a Juan Dela Cruz concert and they were soooooo good! http://talk.philmusic.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=26899 I've never seen Pepe perform that way before. He was at his best. He was so excited cause this was the first time he'd travelled out of the Philippines in 33 years!

The first time Razorback travelled out of Manila was to go perform a show in Cebu. Kevin, Louie and Dave were still very young and Kevin had never been on an airplane before. He was so nervous of flying that he was shakin' like a leaf on a tree! Of course, we had the usual drinks before boarding cause we were bored just waiting around to get going. Tirso got it into his head to scare Kev and tell him some not so good flying horror stories.

Once on board and seated in our area, Tirso turns to Kev and asks him, "Hey Kev...did you take that pill that the stewardesses were handing out earlier?" and Kev was like, "What pill??? What PILL?!?!?!" Hahahaha!   Tirso says something like "The one they give you before flying to make it ok." Kev was sh**ting bricks til we let him off the hook after a little while. Lotsa fun...

Hi guys,

I watched their anniversary concert at gweilos last Saturday or rather Sunday morning. I must say, they still rock. Manuel is a good addition to the band and complements well with Tirso's playing.

I had to leave early as a man of my stature gets calls from a commander. The guys started playing after midnight. It was close to 2am before I headed for the exit. I left as Tirso was about to replace a broken string in his son's American Tele.

I started to watch Razorback in Kayle in the mid 90's. They can still rock the house with their music and gift of gab.

Kudos to my new friends.

what do you mean his son's telecaster?

The telecaster he used he bought for his son who is still very young. Like me, all my guitars will go to my son if he continues to like playing guitar. I already bought him a Squier Mini Strat (CII).

FYI guys.....this coming november LOKOMOTIV is coming to the philippines.

if you're a friend of LOCOMOTIV on friendster and/or myspace, alam na nyo by now.i got it straight from the guitarist's mouth last fri at a kitchie nadal gig in san diego.

about the san diego gig. the band STILL kicks ass! especially with the new singer, ryan hudson. w/all due respect to basti(wolfgang vox and loko's former frontman)...ryan has some serious sh&^t to show!

mga repapits sa pinas...just watch out for their gigs...might even have a back to back gig w/razorback..and the subsequent jam...you never know!

as you know, (wolf gemorra LOKOMOTIV's drummer) was manuel's former bandmate in WOLFGANG...and david aguirre is razorback alumnus guitar player...cgurado magkakaroon ng jammingan nyan!

YORDI!!! WSup man!?!?

Been away for a bit. Our 16th anniv show was brilliant! Thanks to everyone who showed up...and stayed! What a blast. Fyi, theres great video footage of that gig. saw it the other night. Might be released on the net soon.

Re Kev's first flight : MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Priceless! It was during our first trip to Cebu. We were so happy to be there we partied way, way, too much. Next day, everyone was majorly hungover. We had to do a motorcade and radio tour the next day (hard work man!).  Louie decides to take an alkaseltzer then realizes it has aspirin, which he is violently allergic to. We rushed him to hospital and they gave him several injections. His face swelled up like a basketball. We played the "extra-sexy-smooth-jamming set" that night.    Yordi was there I think....

Oi! Next big gig will be on Jan 06, 2007. Jennifer...er....Basti is coming home for xmas so we'll be doing a Razorback/Wolfgang show at UP theater. Should be fun.

Hey Tirso,

Been hiding in a call center finally sold out!!!! Its good you guys are still going strong!!! Reunion of wolfgang and Razorback thats cool bringing back the old golden days of 90's rock.

Hey Migs,

regarding the mettallica gig the suppliers during that time was soundcheck carrying the flag  along side senorous, burnscode, and exile. Balita ko they had 4 different FOH systems. Kudos to the Mettallica Sound Engineer forgot his name for being able to live thru that night and making it sound like it was rocking!!!!

damn I missed that show!!!! had a fever of 42 sayang really wished I saw Mettalica!!!

hey guys, huge Razorback fan here! grabe di na ako nakatrabaho sa kakabasa ng buong thread hehe ...

i got to watch Razorback in '99 at Gotham and Jekyll and Hyde in Manila ... pero the best pa rin yung "YOUTHSTOCK" gig ninyo sa Ayala Alabang, nagwala lahat ng tao when Razorback started to play and ang gulo nung moshpit sa harap hehe sumama ata ako dun, di ko na maalala. ang nangyari lang nga was after Razorback's set, the people were all tired kaya wala nang masyadong nagrock-out when the final band, Wolfgang, was up and ready to play :? :?

H*LY F*CK!! i remember that gig! was it the one where brian did this amaaaazaing solo and everyone went wild!!! he really got the crowd going nuts! tapos wolf tried to do the same thing, PFFFFT. it wasn't the same.

eto na...It's my first time to visit this thread (or should I say shrine to honor thy rock gods?) :-)

I was there nung Jan 6 at nung Hebigat Sounds (sometime Feb last year) at grabe hanep!
I won't be ashamed (in fact I'm very proud) to say that I am a hardcore RazorFan! I play for a band at nakakatawa I converted our singer from being a Basti fan (he sounds a bit like him) to a Kevin fan haha!
Anyway sana di pa tapos ang rakrakan!
I wish razorback would re-release all their albums. I ended up with the 2 in 1 (beggar's and star) pero siyempre mas ok yung tunay. yung razorback album ko nanakaw pa yung disc 1 (sana magkaroon ng eternal kulugo yung kumuha syet!)
Anyway more power guys and please don't stop inspiring young musicians like myself. :-)
Am planning to get myself a FlyingV para katulad ni idol hehe. Yung itim din.

Saguijo: Guijo St. San Antonio Village, it's near the Shrine of the Sacred Heart. It's an old wodden house that was fixed up. astig! there's a second hand shop on the second floor.

rami palang ganda stories about razorback and the great bars na nagclose here sa metro manila..i was in our province then kaya di ko na naabutan ang mga bars na yon at razorback na doing their gigs there..im into alternative eversince, but we cover "rock and roll" song by razorback yung "payaso" nung highschool ,yun lang ang only rock and roll song na cover namin cause, for us yun na pinakamagandang rock and roll song nung time na yon....

well, basti's singing can't hold up to kev's. but basti, who also likes to pose, is still popular.

tirso isn't kev or basti (and that's why he isn't lead) but he does amazing things with the wawa. in my opinion a well placed guitar, wawa, or voice effects is just as important as virtuosity.

well put! and i find tirso cute (sige, poser at ham nga siya), pero cute parin. no connection to his singing and i can't comment rin kasi i have never heard him sing, except back up kay kev. at least wala siyang illusion to becoming a lead singer. he he

galing rin yung guitar effects at talk box niya

Would you believe Yords sold his car? What?!!! Yords without a jalopy dropping pieces on the road? What's this world coming to?!

Sadly, I won't be playing much guitar for a while. I had a motorcycle crash that really messed up my collar bone. I can still play, but while sitting down. And no long runs up and down the fingerboard either. Boohoo!!!  :-P

Stay safe guys! Take it from me. Not being able to play the way you want sucks.

Title: Ongoing Saga: Razorback Album # 5
Post by: aleck_p on September 12, 2009, 09:11:09 PM
"Though members have come and gone, Razorback is still going strong. They are deep in the stretch of making their next album, which guitarist Tirso Ripoll describes as highly conceptual. If the music they've made so far is any indication, ...our ears are in for one hell of a ride." - Rock the Rabbit: Razorback (Playboy Phils., Sept 09)

Samplers:

The 1st Track- Daan-Daang Dahilan (which is, by the way, one of the nominees for song of the year at 2009 NU 107 ROCK AWARDS)

The 2nd Track - Ayon Sa Kanya

Album Release: < TBA! >

Hi Sir migs, I agree with you Burning Tree rocks hard, just wanna ask where can I find a copy of their debut album? and also some lyrics..
Thanks!

wow.  reading this thread brings back memories...   :-D

i was about 15 when i first heard razorback on LA 105.9..."tabi ng bulkan", demo version.  several months later i was a freshman at DLSU (aka "Showband U" during my time there in the mid-to-late '90s) and saw razorback for the first time, with the youth as co-headliner and a la salle band who called themselves "except wendy".  november '94 yan, to the best of my recollection.  sixteen years old, sitting by myself in the william hall ampitheater because none of my blockmates appreciated good rock music...

up for this thread!  sir migs, post ka pa ng mga "war stories" from the early days...   :-D

yup.  miguel, dave and tirso are from LSGH.  AFAIK si miguel at tirso nag-aral sa DLSU while dave was on home study when he reached college age...mga time yan ng hebigat sounds.  someone correct me if i'm wrong.  what i do know is that brian attended CSB, and he'd hang out with us every once in a while...my friends around that time were regularly opening for razorback at the old club dredd...

I've been a fan of Wolfgang and Razorback since highschool (2002). My first Razorback experience was during ALIVE 2007 with both Wolfgang and Razorback tore down the Music Museum with a powerful setlist.

it was indeed the best concert in my life and up to now it feels so surreal na di ako makapaniwala na napanood ko yang dalawang bandang yan, my ultimate idols!

hope to watch Razorback for the 3rd time!

After that night Ive searched and searched where to buy your album not until 2 or 3 years after you released hebigat sounds vol 1. I still have your albums on my Ipod now. Razorback shaped me to become the musician I am right now. I was 17 when I first played with them in Baguio w/ grin dept..Miguel I dont dont know if you still remember that night I was with our manager Mark Vitug of Creative Alternative productions..You were the guy whom I tasted HUSH for the first time..hahaha In a nutshell I idolized Razorback & wolfgang as a kid and told myself "thats what I wanna do someday! Rock out, Have groupies & party hard! Good to read this awesome thread! Indeed the 90's rocks!
