Thanks sa paglisten ulit! SD2 sounds great, hindi ako makapaniwalang raw samples to, more like semi processed samples, cant comment sa AD, sa youtube ko lang narinig yan e, maganda naman kaso hindi ganun karaming options magagawa mo compared sa SD2 from what I see, also a guy called Dimi Nalvantov has a great preset for AD, check him out, search mo narinig ko lang demo nya dati e hehe

Ipon2x bro!!! Saka mo na isipin yung monitors, microphones, room treatment/ soundproofing, cables, and furnitures.

This is very good. can you elaborate the recording process. thanks
Thank you for the kind words, sir :)
Actually all three have their own unique way of recording process (its sort of a portfolio to show i can work with both analog and digital equipment)
Anyway, let me elaborate on each of their recording process:
On the first link (Ophidia - Cato EP Teaser), I used my guitar, an audio interface, and amplitube 3. drums were done on ezdrummer and mixed in adobe audition 3. the guitar is plugged in straight into the audio interface. only a bit of post production EQ-ing and mixing was done after the recording.
here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7os9_laNg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk7os9_laNg)
On the 2nd link (AMT R1 Demo), I used my guitar, the AMT R1 pedal, and an audio interface. no digital effects on that one in particular. the pedal is plugged in straight into the audio interface from its cabinet simulation output. drums were programmed via ezdrummer, and bass was just my guitar plugged into a pitch shifter. only a bit of post production EQ-ing and mixing was done after recording.
here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Err65xfUlkM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Err65xfUlkM)
And on the 3rd link (Wampler Triple Wreck Demo), I used my guitar, the Wampler Triple Wreck pedal, the POD HD500, and an audio interface. the dirt tone comes from the Wampler and all modulation effects (delay and reverb) were from the HD500. it is plugged in straight into the audio interface via the direct unbalanced output. drums, bass, and vocals were part of the backing track downloaded from the internet.
absolutely no post production EQ-ing, processing, and mastering was done on this one. just a bit of panning and volume mix. everything comes from the rig before getting into the interface.
here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqZuQwwHNwE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqZuQwwHNwE)

More comments would be greatly appreciated

This song was recorded and mixed by me and my band Luna's in my 'home recording studio' almost 2 years ago. It got me into the First Elements Songwriting Camp :-D

As always doc, another lively and heartfelt classical guitar piece. Was that the ramirez in action? and also if i may ask the details about the micing system used in the video like how it was positioned and the distance from the guitar, that would be nice to hear. :-D

Salamat Jamming_papu. Ginamit kong guitar ay ang Ignazio Rozas 1a. It is a spruce top guitar (not like the Ramirez guitars I have which are all cedar tops). The song has a lot of artificial harmonics so I opted for a bright sounding spruce top guitar. The guitar was mic'ed using transparent mics ( flat with no coloration). I used Earthworks SR 30 mics for this. The first mic was aimed at the 12th fret about 2-3 feet away and the other mic was aimed at the bridge about the same distance away from the guitar. Preamps used were solid state (not tube preamps) as I needed a transparent sound with no coloration. I used a pair of Universal Audio Solo 110's for this. The recorded signal was mixed out of the box (out the DAW) and fed thru a transparent analog compressor (FMR RNC) set at a ratio of 1:2 with about 2-4 db signal attenuation. The signal was then fed thru the Avalon EQ. I only added a 32K boost to give the signal some air. The recording was then fed back to the DAW and rerecorded (reprinted). Reverb was then added using a UAD plug in. I think mixing out of the box into analogue hardware gives the recording better depth and dimension. I will be experimenting more with this recording technique once I get a summing amplifier. Thanks.

Title: Re: Home recording samples
Post by: jamming_papu on July 02, 2012, 08:57:29 PM
in my observation pinakamahirap mag-record ng drum tracks kasi
because of that i record drum parts by midi or software trigger. kung midi, i just choose a good kit/set from my DAW's built-in instrument and program ng notes properly. for trigger, i use a korg nanopad running Toontrack EZ drummer lite. mahirap din gawin yung 2 options na yan since it require some skills but it's a good alternative 'pag di talaga kaya yung micing a drum kit method.

Just wanted to share one on my original demo recorded at home. All played by me except sa drums (just used ezdrummer since di ako marunong mag-drum :-D). Wala rin ako bass yung guitar ko lang din ang ginamit ko then ginamot ko na lang using some bass tone plug-ins.
Now I'm really thinking of investing seriously on building up a small home recording studio. Sobrang nag-eenjoy ako so far.

Instead of getting those electronic sounding kit, try to use danys virtual drum. You can download it for free. And it sounds good too. That's the one I'm using. But again, the cymbals doesn't have that washed sound so its hitting it over and over again with the same volume. But atleast you can profile it with a couple of options. Its still good for me. Also used it in this, soundcloud.com/zulueta89/forsaken

this one is good. naalala ko nung college days namin gumawa din kami ng demo using only acoustic guitars, bongos, shaker, mic-ed with a cheapo desktop mic using cool edit inside a dorm room. too bad di ko na mahanap yung mga raw tracks so i can edit, add further tracks and remix it. remember that all the gears are tools to create music. yung skill at talent ng banda (at kasama ng galing ng recording guys :-P) ang pinakamalaking factors lagi.

You will hear the difference where your sound gets bigger.

Online collaboration with a friend. Bale dinownload ko yung ukulele and vox track, overdubbed bass, cajon, shaker tracks and finally mixed to (my) perfection. Bass track was done using Amplitube 3 and percussion instruments were recorded using a SM57 to a Samson C-Valve preamp.

Gear: i5 WinXP PC, M-Audio Firewire Solo (But only used it probably 2 sessions coz it got flaky and couldn't seem to work well with my PC so i contented with the on-board audio interface in 90% of the tracks recorded) Mic Tube Pre-Amp Large Diaghram condenser microphone

I revisited an old demo so here is my feeble attempt at re-recording a new scratch track in a different key. I tried to leave some room for the bass guitar so it may sound 'thin' and a wee bit too loud... :-D
vocals: none bass: none guitars: 2 tracks panned, 75% left and right. I used POD farm and LePou. drums: ezdrummer
Interface - I used a Mackie Onyx satellite (piece of crap really, wish I had something better) DAW - Tracktion (came with the Mackie) monitors - old gen KRK rokit5

^Thanks! Like I said I'm just learning. Pero I think yung major step na ginawa ko is nire-eq ko yung drum kit individually. Stock lang kasi yung una straight from EZD kaya I think I was trying to compensate the eq of the guitar to match the drum tone, which in turn made it sound nasal. Also, palipat-lipat ako between PC desk ko at kotse, haha :-D

sounds very neat and arranged very well.
some personal comments, the guitar is pan-center and sounds powerful. so when the vocals comes in, lumabas na background na lang yun at tunog dispersed in the whole stereo field. di na gaanong marinig yung vocal elements kasi di sya maka-break thru sa guitar sa gitna. i always look for balance in all mix when i listen to a song. pero kung ganun talaga yung gusto palabasin then ok lang.

several things. the objective would be i-balance yung guitar with the vocals so kapag nagsabay na sila, pantay yung output. kung ako yung mag-mmix, i'll trim the guitar level down, decrease the reverb on the vox, increase its signal level and pan it to the center reducing the stereo effect of the vocals. maganda na yung guitars so wala na ako gustong ibahin dun kundi ibalance sya with the vox. hope it helps. :)

Hi guys! This is our band's newest song. It's a true home recording :-D
Drums: 5 drums mics (the Shure package with PG81 overheads) connected to an M-audio Fast Track Ultra 8r, going to Logic Pro 9. We used the Glynn Johns method, with an extra mic under the snare.
Bass Guitar: Direct to Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Logic 9.
Guitar: Direct to Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Logic 9. Amplitube 3, as well as Logic's own amp designer plugin.
Some MIDI piano and synth sounds.
Vocals: Audix OM5 to Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Logic 9.

Hi! We recorded this for our vocalist's film thesis. This was crammed as we had a deadline. We composed and recorded this song in about 8 hours, and it's a testament to cramming's ability to bring out the best in you. :)
The instruments were recorded live, and vocals were overdubbed. Guitars were close-mic'ed using a Laney LV100 amp and a Goldea TNT-B running through a Kustom Eminence speaker with a homemade cab; the mics were Behringer XM8500s. Bass was recorded through DI via a Laney RB4 amp. For the drums, 8 mics were used. A Behringer C2 pair in X/Y to avoid phase issues, two Behringer XM8500 mics for the toms, a cheap Carol mic (of surprisingly good sound and quality) for the kick drum, and a Samson Q7 mic for the snare. Vocals were recorded using an Audio Technica AT2020 condenser mic. All of these went through a Tascam US-1800 16 input audio interface, recorded and mixed in REAPER.
The vocal mic here, however, was a Samson, and the drum mics were less, and were arranged somewhat halfway between Glyn Johns and Recorderman. This was recorded and mixed by Kenneth Castillo. I'm sure he's in PM too, but I don't know his username. :-D

Here's a little video demo of a metal tone ala Lamb of God. I was playing an Ibanez Iron Label 6-string with EMG 81 and 60 through a Line6 POD processor (can't remember the model name) and then into an Alesis IO. We used FL11 for the DAW, Guitar Rig 5, a midi bass plugin and Metal Machine for the drums.

Song Idea Number 18 version 2 (http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12731451)
First track I recorded using my Ibanez RGIR20FE equipped with EMG 81 (bridge) and 60 (neck) pickups.
Guitar plugged to M.V. Shredhead (Tone = 12 o'clock | Volume = 12 o'clock | Presence = 4 o'clock | Gain = a little before 9 o'clock) going straight into a Peavey VK112 mic'ed with an SM57 going to Xenyx 2-channel mixer. Signal goes to a Creative Audigy soundcard then to Reaper (DAW).
This also my first time to record using my Takamine D50 acoustic guitar mic'ed by an SM57.
That ambient effect was from TC Flashback delay with the mode set to reverse matched with guitar volume swells.
And that's about it. Thanks for listening!

ok ang mixing particularly yung laki ng tunog ng drums for a rock tune. ayus yung pag trigger ng drums. pwede pa lagyan ng more grind sa rhythm guitars. in short, galing mehn

I'd like to put up my home recordings for critique as well!

Only the two test tracks were actually recorded with an audio interface, everything else was direct to the Line In of my laptop, except for the USB condenser mic :) The first (bottom of the list) four tracks I only used a CDR King mic, and the very first one was recorded in my car's backseat and took two months to autotune (not me on vocals hehehe)

Guys, try Freemake Video Converter. its free, its solid, it supports a lot of files. very reliable. thats what I use for all of my recordings via REAPER.
