Title: Vintage/Semi-Vintage Guitar Gallery
Post by: wrathster on February 28, 2007, 12:54:32 PM
Mga ka-kosa,
post naman kayo ng pics at specs ng mga vintage at semi-vintage guitars niyo!

For serious collectors, the term "vintage" usually refers only to instruments crafted in the '60s and earlier. Pero sama na rin natin mga born in the '70s and '80s para masaya.

here's my beat-up 1987 Gibson Les Paul Custom.

all stock except the bridge pickup, which was defective when i got it. had to replace it with a SD '59. neck pickup is stock Gibson "Pat. No. 2,737,842" humbucker. replaced plastic nut with bone, and had it refretted too.

The first two on the left are sort of "vintage".

The blue green one is a MIA 1980 "The Strat". Only three years in production. The second tone knob is actually a switch to enable 9 positions for the pickups. Today, Fender offers a similar S1 switching system.

The cream one is a MIJ 1987 Squier that I have modded with a Floyd and a HS-3 (don't like it) as bridge pickup.

well. may "vintage" tsaka may "old". hehehe. sama na natin yung "old" para marami makasali.  :-)

sa pananaliksik ko, yung defintion ng "vintage" depende sa brand and model eh. like for Les Pauls, strictly those in the first runs of production. before they temporarily pulled the model from the line. i.e. bago gawing uso ni clapton et al. for serious wood fanatics, it's the some 1,800 1958-60 sunbursts, and only that. sa fender naman pre-CBS. sa Ibanez, vintage na ang late 70s-80s. on the other hand, may ngsasabi na basta 20 years old vintage na.

 :-)

my oldest guitar was a Greco SA 500 hollowbody now owned by a Jazz player from laguna.

Breathtaking Collection, Blue......  you could publish a whole Vintage Guitar Magazine with all of those gems...........  How about it?  With specs and all....  that would be quite a read......  We all could chip in and help with the photography, publishing and stuff......  :-D :-D

Whew, after Blue's posts, i'm almost ashamed to post this.... anyway, here's something i got really really cheap back in 2004......

A Bruno Conqueror semi......  thinline, bolt-on neck......

Here's a body shot.....  There's multiple body binding, very nicely done....

The logo...

The pickups have this gold foil on them.....  weird, but there you have it.....  i don't know if its for shielding....  Very bluesy sounding, especially with a tube amp....

The trem is a bigsby copy.....  doesn't travel that far, but it does the job....

Its a 5-bolt neck!!!  :-D :-D  The neck is composed of multiple laminated wood.......

Here's a shot of the back.....  I like the fact that even if its a bolt on, the body binding still continues all around the guitar.....  then there's that deep red sunburst.......

Well, that's my Bruno..... absolutely zilch data on the internet........

Thanks for looking!!!

Hi abysinnianson....

I agree, it has the Mosrite look to it.....  actually, the only info i have been able to get was from an article on the net entitled "Guitar Collecting On A Budget" (the link is: http://www.bigredtoybox.com/cgi-bin/toynfo.pl?guitarsindex or try to google Bruno Conqueror).  Here, I'm quoting the pertinent portions of the article:

"Gutar Collecting On A Budget"

The 1960's - Japanese instruments

Arai/Aria
In my opinion Arai produced some of the highest quality instruments coming out of Japan in the late 60's to early 70's. Their guitars were sold under the brand names of Arai, Arai Diamond, Aria, and Diamond. Arai also supplied guitars and components for guitars branded Arita, Bruno, Conrad, Domino, Lyle, Maxi-Tone, Orpheous, Pan, Univox and others.

xxx     xxx     xxx     xxx     xxx     xxx     xxx

Bruno Conqueror
This Gibson ES335 copy is a very high quality instrument for a budget guitar. It is fully bound with both front and back made from a single panel of wood. Note that even the f holes have binding on this one. The single coil pickups are hot and tend to feedback at stage volume but it is a great instrument for recording. I love the deep red marbling in the pickguards. I've seen similar guitars branded Conrad, Lyle, Orpheous, and Univox.

I have tried looking through posts at the Aria/Matsumoku sites, but i've had no luck finding info.....

Well, thanks for looking......  I'm on the lookout for one or TEN more of these  :-D :-D  Despite the goofy bolt on neck, this guitar actually plays well and sounds quite bluesy......  Sounds quite similar to a P90 equipped semi (to my ears, anyway)

blue buddha -- beautiful guitars.  how'd you get hold of those?  picked 'em up over the years through gigs, friends, relatives, etc.?

I guess the bug just bit me a little earlier than most folks my age, so I started getting into these things as a kid in the late 70's or so. That really was a time when many of these were just looked upon as little more than used utility instruments, so they were plentiful, cheap (in light of today, almost criminally so), and nobody wanted them very much.  :-P  Everybody just wanted the latest models. Didn't get many from friends or relatives really..... mostly from shops and individuals who were just getting rid of them in order to replenish stock space or itching to get "new and improved" models.  :-D

The pattern was fairly simple: knowing the music, knowing the sound in the music, figuring out what made the sound, looking for what made the sound, being curious enough to understand the ingredients in it, saving up for it, and not selling (didn't have to 'cuz many of these things were so reasonable then).

Whew, after Blue's posts, i'm almost ashamed to post this.... anyway, here's something i got really really cheap back in 2004......

Chum -- never be ashamed of anything you like, or anything you like that you may think is just cheap or worthless. If you see or hear merit in it, that's all that matters. The upside of such an attitude is that regardless of whether it appreciates in value or desireability, you will always be a happy camper playing, hearing, or looking at it. To you, it'll always be a pretty cool guitar and you'll be glad to play and own it.

Will try to take pics of a few more and post them.

Sorry bout that -- moved that story over to the "brief history/timeline" thread where it belonged.

But re: pointy guitars: I have one pointy guitar, an Ibanez RGA121, but that's it. I did get into Ibanez in a big way, but not the pointy/gumby kind. Have a modest group of 70's ibbys that are superb axes in every way. Will see if I can post pics of those. I've tried many of the pointy axes (some supremely pointy) but never really got into the aesthetics of it. I guess I'm much more of a "grabber" than a "flyer" as a guitar player, and kind of a fuddy duddy with regards guitar design and musical preferences (a "digger" rather than a "shredder".... a "hippie" rather than a "punk", "alien", "metalhead" or "goth"). I somehow associate the pointy stuff with the advent of MTV and the heavy emphasis on visuals, and somehow, I've always landed on the side of stuff associated with a time when the music just stood on its own two feet. That's really not meant as a criticism, just a personal preference -- hope that doesn't offend anyone. But it does explain what I ended up with.  :|

Can't really show anything here because I kinda started getting guitars late.  My oldest would be a 1972 Yamaha Acoustic Dreadnought which I bought new on November, 1972.  The next one is a 79 Precision Bass, again bought new, modified with BadAss Bridge and D'Marzio pups which I used to use in doing jingles way back.  In terms of guitars, my Gibson LP Standard 78 bought new in 1980, would be my sort of vintage.  Again, I used this guitar extensively in doing commercial jingles (which was ork for me then).  I have, however, a US Vintage re-issue Fender Strat 57 made in 1988, bought in 1989.  Aside from those, my guitars are mostly 90's and 2000 models, all bought brand new - no vintage ones.  During the 80s and 90s, I was concentrating more in recording equipment and outboard gear.

This would be my Gibson Double Cut Special with P90s, the "wannabe" (and no match) to BBs original Gibson LP Specials.

Very nice Les Paul double cutaways  :-D :-D

Here's a recent purchase and current project of mine..... a Yamaha Pulser Bass 400.... Obviously a copy of the venerable Fender Precision Bass........

I guess this would qualify as semi-vintage.....  From what i have read in Vintage Guitar Magazine, they first came out in 1977.....

The logo in script.....

The body is ash, the heavy type.......  Pickup is stock.....  I'm still cleaning up this bass......  Needs a string change.....

Thanks for looking.....

BB,

did you ever acquire any pointy guitars?  Ibanez?  Kramer? any?...

toybitz, here's an interesting series of ibbys -- well before the time they started to get... well... er... pointy. In terms of ibbys, these would be considered vintage as these are some of the ones the real nuts go for since they represent the first real "quality" departures from the straight copies of the lawsuit era. Relative to the mainstream vintage market, however, most folks would put these in the odd category of semi-vintage (if there is such an animal) as they were mostly made in the 70's. In many cases, ibby quality during this period actually surpassed many of the big US makers -- a guy named Jeff Hasselberger was head of design/R&D at Ibanez and his team was cranking out some really fine stuff -- good enough for gearhead characters like The Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, John Scofield, and Joe Pass to use. Look closely -- the now familiar features in modern ibbys started here -- the AR body shape, Gibraltar quick change tailpieces, tree/vine of life inlays, castle headstocks, etc.

just wondering, ngayon po ba do you still get interested in the new models of guitars na lumalabas considering what you already got ?

Always interested -- some terrific things being made these days -- but have become rather crusty and selective in old age. GAS is a really bad disease....  :-D

There's no vault.  Thanks for your kind comments.

Best way to maintain these things is to keep 'em lying around within easy reach. That way, they get looked after -- played, adjusted, gigged sometimes, and wiped down occasionally.

The only similarity between this and a Les Paul is the general shape, generally heavy weight, and that it plays like butter. Otherwise, it's a totally different guitar:

• "German Carved" top designed by Roger Rossmeissl of Rickenbacker & later Fender fame
• Solid Zen Ash body, thinner overall than an LP
• Maple neck
• Heel-less neck to body joint
• Ebony board
• Coil-tap / phase switch
• Solid plated brass control cavities behind
• Scalloped headstock
• "Almost jumbo" frets

It's a very versatile, bright and spanky guitar that sustains forever. It was Ibby's top of the line of the Artist-Professional series, commonly referred to as the "Randy Scruggs" model after the famed bluegrass picker who endorsed it and used it almost exclusively during that period. Two sets with this baby and you'll walk off the stage about 2 inches shorter. Kind of like 70's Les Pauls in the 10 lb. range.

^ chambered kaya?

No chambers. Parang bato 'to. Made in the era when people believed that "mass is the gas", "heavy=sustain", and "brass is the monkey's ass".

There is indeed something undeniably attractive about these ibbys -- something akin to the height of the baroque aesthetic in guitar design. Abalone, pearl, binding, carving, and gold everywhere.

Funny how as I get older, I end up gravitating to the more basic stuff...  :|

Re: Heavy/Mass/Brass/Sustain - It does still hold true. But luthiers today have become much more aware of other factors that influence different kinds of good tone. If sustain was the be all and end all of all measures as some of those 70's marketing dudes would have believe, we'd be playing reinforced concrete guitars today.  :-D

Yep. "THE banjo player" is an understatement.... Earl is "THE BANJO PLAYER".  :-D

And Randy is his son, the guitar player. Played serious bluegrass and country with the Earl Scruggs Revue (the family band, of course), later played in rock bands, and eventually found his niche as a go-to nashville session dude with folks like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, etc. I remember he was up for "Musician of the Year" or something like that by the Country Music Awards a few years back. The guy has chops.

Hi to all!!!

I haven't seen any acoustics posted, so i thought i'd start the ball rolling...... Due to severe GAS attacks last year, i managed to snag these.....

First off, an Aria Folk Guitar.....  OM Body, multiple body binding.....

This appears to have been made before Aria switched to the Aria Pro Label....

My biggest surprise was the Bolt-on Neck on this guitar....  The headstock has no angle at all...

Here's a view of the compensated bone saddle...  This is an upgrade, the original was plastic.... I also carved a new nut from a bone blank, as seen from the pic.....  The compensated saddle was done by Arie Hipolito (the saddle i originally carved was compensated at the B string, but kuya Arie told me it was the G string that needed compensation.....)

Next off, a Yamaha FG-150 guitar......  This one originally had a red label, but when i got it, the label had already been removed.....

This only info i have been able to get from the web indicates that the guitar was originally made from 1968 to 1972.....

Here's a view of the original tuners......

As with my Aria, I upgraded the saddle to a bone one, and compensated it.....

Despite all the wear on this guitar, the neck has remained straight, and the fingerboard has no wear at all......
This one's a keeper.....

Aside from the Bone Nuts and Saddles, i also installed Ebony bridgepins on both instruments, which I think are a must on any steel string guitar.....  Not just for the look, but for the tone as well......

Thanks for looking!!!

Chum

Hehe -- no need for tissue.

Meron pa ditong lumang Gretsch sa 'pinas. Hanapin lang sa mga sulok sulok -- they're out there. Here's another one for the road -- 1960 naman ito -- compare with the '59. Small difference in the details, and like the '59, temporarily installed a tune-o-matic bridge for better intonation than the original bar bridge (next to it). Less faded ang kulay ng '60.... but the '59 sounds better.

How VERY VERY COOL! Have a real soft spot in my heart for that guitar. First electric I ever bought was the sunburst/white pickguard version of that Galaxie in 1974. Wrote about it in this thread:  http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,39505.15.html

Also found out that the other geetar picker in our band owned the "paisley wallpaper" version of the Galaxie in the 70's as well.

Aways wondered where that guitar is now.....  (overwhelmed with nostalgia). I went looking for old Hofners years later and these are a couple I found:

Man, those hofners are nice....... Bitchin', Blue.....

Here's a Bass I scored sometime back......  This one is a Gibson Les Paul Triumph Bass

This bass has low impedance pickups.......

Here's a shot of the controls.....  aside from pickup switching, it also has a phase reversal feature....

Here's a shot of the back.... It has a contour for more comfortable playing.....

Ganda ng Triumph mo chum. Those basses play like butter. They were the bass counterpart to the Les Paul Recording model guitar -- a super flexible model with low impedance pickups which could be plugged straight into a mixing console. One of those was Les' personal favorite axe for the longest time.  8-)

Haha -- thanks for your kind words RonnieA. I just posted some of these things not really to make people drool, but as sort of visual aids in the event forumites come across similar things around here. One at least has some pics to compare them with to help determine whether something someone sees is genuine or not.

In all seriousness, this "collection" (if you could call it that) is really quite modest. Nothing compared to the breadth, scope, and value of truly "serious" collectors' stuff. Pipitsugin lang 'to in relative terms, and gathered when many of these things were not much sought after. Basically much more of "player's stuff" or "geek's hoard" that's of some academic interest, rather than a real "Collection" with a capital C.

Cheers.

IIRC, the P90s are screwed directly to the body.

And, yeah, pang main course nga yan.  The most "bastos" and gnarly P90 sounding guitar I've ever heard.  Perfect for some Delta/early Chicago blues bottleneck.  Surely, the very old and dry wood's got a lot to do with it.

wow oh wow......  That Gretsch has such a Beatles vibe to it!!!!  Beautiful!!!!  Way to go, farseer!!!!!  8-) 8-) 8-)

Well, I have noticed that all guitars so far posted have round necks  :-D :-D :-D  Thought I'd post a Square neck......

I found this in, of all places, Kamuning about three Christmases ago, in one of the antique shops there.....

a Star Lapsteel.....  Unfortunately, absolutely NO info about it on the net, not even on the brand......

Here's a shot of the controls.....  one volume, one tone.....  I don't know what the metal piece above the pickup is for.....

Here's a shot of the back.... as you can see, very square.....  :-D :-D The plastic cover was fabricated by the good doctor Arie; the original was a piece of vinyl with cloth stuck on to it......

a funny thing about this.... when i first held it, the guy at the shop said it was virtually UNPLAYABLE, because there was no way the strings could reach the fingerboard.....   :-D :-D :-D (well, the strings are about half an inch high, so there....)  I had to pinch myself to keep from laughing out loud.....

Here's a shot of the headstock....  as you can see, very cheap tuners, and a decal for the brand name.....  The plastic tips of the tuners have aged very nicely....

Here's a closer look at the pickup.... this thing just GROWLS...... very very bluesy......  close to a P90 sound...... well, sort of.....  :-D

This actually has a model number.....  HG 4 C, or so.......

Here's a view of the "fingerboard".... well, not really, but it does have frets!!!! :? :? :?.....  Its plastic......  not sure what kind though.... bakelite?  hmmmmm....

Thanks for looking!!!!

Ganda ng Triumph mo chum. Those basses play like butter. They were the bass counterpart to the Les Paul Recording model guitar -- a super flexible model with low impedance pickups which could be plugged straight into a mixing console. One of those was Les' personal favorite axe for the longest time.  8-)

Thanks for your kind words, Blue.....  Thanks din chris005 re the lap steel....

Here's a current favorite of mine....  a Gibson Les Paul Standard.......  This was set up and restored by the good doctor Arie.......  As always, very good work from him, this guitar plays so smoothly......

its a '77, from the serial number....

What i like about this guitar is the sunburst on the back.... even the neck and headstock have it.....

just love the inlays on this guitar.....  they define it as a Standard.......  Interestingly, this guitar has not yet been refretted.....  you can see the plastic binding on the edge of the fret is still intact.....

When i got this guitar, it didn't have the original pickups anymore.....  So, I put in Seymour Duncan Antiquities.....  Now, those pickups are just so nice......  not very high output, but the sound is just so .... well, Creamy...  :-D :-D

I also didn't like the speed knobs that came with it, so i located and had the good doctor Arie install these amber knobs and pointers.....

A lovely Norlin LP chum! Very nice, with many of the basic Norlin details in evidence..

Out of curiosity: was there formerly a switch installed among the regular control knobs? You can see what appears to be a "plugged" hole in the middle of the control cluster. Also, do you have any idea how much it weighs? Is it one of the usual "boat anchors" or were you lucky enough to score a nice light one?
Title: Re: Vintage/Semi-Vintage Guitar Gallery
Post by: Chum on March 18, 2007, 12:05:03 PM
Hi Blue!!!

I'm not at all sure about the plug, because i bought this guitar from tolits (kuya Lito Bote) based on his description only; the guitar was with  kuya Arie at the time, and i only got to see it when kuya Arie finally completed it......  Although i think it was Arie who plugged the hole, because he has done a similar job with another guitar of mine (an ES 225TD).....

About the weight, it is quite heavy, unfortunately.....  If you study the pics, you will see i installed Schaller strap locks, because i was afraid the regular small strap buttons on it would not hold up well due to the weight.....  I had to plug in the existing holes, and re-drill for the locks.....  That's why i still prefer using my strats up to now, my Tokai in particular weighs about half of this les paul (well, at least it does feel/seem that way)....

Hi to all!!!

Here's a guitar i gave away..... well sort of, its my brother's main acoustic now....  a Morris F-13....

From the label, it was made in 1974....

Here's a shot of the compensated bridge; set up was done by Doc Arie.....

I didn't like the original machine heads, so i had Doc Arie install these Martin style machineheads.....  Much, much better, and with a strong Martin vibe......

Bugoy, beautiful Yamaha mon, ganda talaga!!!!!

voodoo, so sorry you lost that Washburn.....  You know, i had a double cutaway Epiphone a while back; the cutaways weren't as sharp as the Washburn in your pic, but it also had 3 knobs like your guitar......  Sayang, i wasn't able to photograph it while it was still with me, but i remember it was a very heavy guitar, what with all the wood.......

it's an early seventies " pre-tokai" brand.  Gaban was their first name and they were good at making gibson copies. The logo even looks like a gibson from afar. Weird looking on a strat don't you think? Even the nut is shaped like a gibson. String spacing is also gibsonesque.
And when i had jun castro check the wood, he told me that the wood is probably Korina.

the neck feels like a bat! multi piece. birdseye fingerboard. multipiece neck ala ibanez wizard( although it looks like they were made the neck out of spare maple scrap. nevertheless the three pieces of wood at the back helped in keeping this old neck straight these past few decades).  very comfortable in the upper registers.

looks like a strat but as heavy as a les paul.

Hi to all!!!  Very nice guitars, bugoy and Taoistguitarist…….

I thought I’d post this here as well:
Here’s a guitar I gave away to my bro (Master Windu here)…..  a Fender Mustang……

As you can see from the pics, this guitar very well qualifies as a Relic……  Very heavy Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe…….

When I got this guitar, the pickups were stock, but very weak…..  My bro changed these to Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro strat pickups……..

Here’s a shot of the trem…..  It took a can of WD-40 and two hours worth of scrubbing with a steel brush to get most of the rust off…..  But I think it turned out quite well……

Here’s a shot of the neck……  very heavy wear on the upper registers, the wailing zones…..

Thanks, farseer and deltaslim.........  Really, I have Arie Hipolito and Lito Bote to thank for this........  They refined my taste in guitars, so to speak, and without their help, i wouldn't have had any access to most of the guitars I have today...........   :-D :-D

ayan na pala si gaban! hindi ko na-recognize ah, hehehe. ano pickups nyan bro? and what changes did you make? so far nakikita ko yung pickups, pickguard, knobs, bridge, refin, hehe.

pickups, routing, pickguard, knobs, refin, refret. the bridge is still the old stock bridge. di ko papalitan since steel na yung inertia block.

hehehe siguradong lugi na ko if sell this. kaya di ko na ito ibebenta. :-D

Seriously... pwede 'to.  8-)

Imagine a mounted museum exhibition for one month. Possible themes:

1. History of the Modern Guitar
2. Industrial Design Study: The Guitar
3. Dangerous Curves (after the famous exhibition at the Smithsonian)
4. Etc....

Exhibit Opening is a Concert.
Demos every afternoon at 3pm.
Exhibit closing is a jam on different instruments playing different genres by different known players.
Well photographed exhibition catalog for sale with accompanying CD.

Now that's what I'd say has the makings of a blockbuster museum show.

Doc, nakita ko na yata 'yung tele ne 'yan ah..... did it have an engraved metal allparts pickguard when you got it? I think that used to be in the now-defunct Shaw Blvd. branch of Audiophile in the early 90's. If it's the same one, it may be earlier than a '69 -- transition logo pa sa headstock... not yet the solid black logo of the '69 models. Stripped and refin'd as I recall, but a nice guitar nevertheless. Naaalaala kong kinalikot 'yan ni Mang Boy...  :-D

The guitar would look better if it was moved to the left or the right.

CBS na yun logo... and i think they started using fender bigsby mga 68' na... the neck plate is dated 66' though... pots are also 66'... but the neck stamp makes it 69' or maybe early 70'... sayang naman yun nasa audiophile, nasaan na kaya yun :-)

BTW, lake placid blue or something similar (turquoise metallic) yun orig finish... i have to change the pguard, hindi bagay :-D

71' gibson lespaul standard 58'... confusing, since its really a 54' not a 58'by specs... wrap around tpeice, p90s.... correct small headstock, and thin cut away binding, 1pc mahogany body and 1 pc neck, no volute (early 70s pancake, 3 pc neck, volute)... lighter than most if not all the 70s era lespauls ive tried...

Good score doc. It's in great shape -- nice dark fingerboard (compare to the ri -- 'yan ang sakit ng ibang ri's talaga).

Have you tried weighing it yet? Curious to know what it comes out to. Try to see if you can figure out if you've got a two or three-piece top. You should be able to make out the slightest hint of the join(s) reading through the paint job. In fact, you may even be able to read the directions of the woodgrain on that top if you hold it up to a light at an angle.

Yup. Patsambatsamba lang talaga. But your chances at getting the dark boards are best with the 59Ri's -- Gibson does try to get most everything right on those guitars as they are the flagship models.

They are out there -- just have to look for those light ones. Just last september or october, I also scored a pretty light '78 fretless precision in natural -- light ash body, black guard, and -- get this -- a pretty rare one-piece maple neck/board! Yep, no rosewood in sight. In immaculate condition, orig case, with ashtrays and everything. No time to take a pic lang.

Tsambahan lang talaga.

Hehe. We'll see how things go....

In the meantime, for your entertainment pleasure here are some interesting, not-so-well-known, unique, vintage, and not-so-vintage things that have been lying around for some years... for your academic interests...

'61 Epiphone Zephyr 312NT
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/chocolatebuddha/Epiphone1961Zephyr312NT.jpg)

70's Hagström Swede
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/chocolatebuddha/Hagstrm-mid70sswede.jpg)

'89 Pedulla MVP4
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/chocolatebuddha/Pedulla1989MVP4.jpg)

The last two ones here are interesting. Don't know if you guys are familiar with the old Ampeg Scroll Basses. There were several models from the 60's, the most well known of which is probably the one Rick Danko played in The Band's farewell concert dubbed "The Last Waltz", which was made into a terrific film by Martin Scorcese -- probably one of the best concert films ever. Here's a reference pic (not mine) of those rare scroll basses in their various production forms:

See that funky one in the middle with the nasty horns? That was called the ASB-1 Ampeg Devil Bass. It was designed by a guy named Mike Roman who worked with Ampeg through the mid-60's. Well, as it turned out, Ampeg ended production on the Devil Bass around '66-'67 or so, but Mike Roman never totally gave up on the idea of possible variations on the theme. Here are two one-of-a-kind experimental instruments made by the guy in 1968 that never saw the light of day but ended up here in Manila somehow -- hopeful designs that never went into production on account of quirkiness, lack of interest, and of course, general weirdness:

'68 Michael Roman "One-Off" Bass...

...and its matching Guitar counterpart also from '68
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/chocolatebuddha/MichaelRoman1968.jpg)

Truly only "one in the world" of both instruments.  8-)

... maybe with a golden headband, multi-colored silken robes, metallic boots, and a velvet cape. Smoky incense onstage of course.  :-D

The bass plays pretty well -- ultra lightweight, full/deep/narrow neck, low action... and had a resonant, woody tone similar to a Höfner violin bass and the other Ampeg scroll basses.

The guitar, while made of spectacular materials and carefully made, is much less successful as a player. Not surprising it never made production.

I don't know if this is just me, pero it seems as if Gibsons tend to "age" more gracefully than Strats/Teles.  Maybe because Gibsons are more fragile (specifically the headstock) than Fenders that they should be mojo-ed the long way without shortcuts.  Relic-ing?  Forget about it!  Kung baga sa pagkain, dapat lutuin sa crackpot and hindi i-microwave.  A similar analogy would be like comparing Jeff Beck and Keith Richards.  Beck played somewhat along a very safe, defined corridor whereas Keef's been all over the place (actually more on the edge) - including falling off a coconut tree in his senior years.  Is one better than the other?  I don't think so.  Either way, both guitars and axemen hold a special place in the hearts of string-instrument enthusiasts like us.  Iba lang ang pinagdaanan nila, pero pareho tayong "bow" sa kanila.

Me, I'm still hoping to run into a sweet old widow who has a son's/departed husband's old 335 or Broadkaster tucked away in a closet, and will gladly pay me to "get rid of the junk in her house".  Yeah, baby!
