Title: Which DSLR/gear to buy?
Post by: kurtcobainer on December 14, 2009, 07:56:23 PM
***I changed the title para mas malawak yung topic.
I am now considering buying a brandnew DSLR, pero naguguluhan ako kung ano bibilhin ko.. :?
Help!
My choices are: - Nikon D3000 - Canon 1000D
Which is more user-friendly? Kanino mas mura ang parts? Share your experiences.
Thanks!

try pipho.
you should check for the following: -shutter actuations -history of repair -history of damages (drops and [gooey brown stuff]) -dumi sa sensor -dumi sa lens (if included)

How can I check the actuations, history of repair & damages?

Title: Help! Nikon D3000 or Canon 1000D?
Post by: kurtcobainer on December 15, 2009, 07:01:10 PM
Sad to say, phased-out na pala ang D40 and D60 :-(
Ok, so I've now decided to get a bnew DSLR. But I'm torn between the Nikon D3000 & Canon 1000D. Which do you think is much better & user friendly?
I went to Henry's kanina & halos same lang price nila eh. I just want to now which is better in terms of reliability, user friendly functions, availability of accessories. I've heard that Canon is more expensive than Nikon.

Ahhh talaga? I'm currently reading this: http://photo.net/equipment/choosing-a-dslr-camera/
Baka it can help me in choosing to buy a decent DSLR. :-D

Canon 1000D nalang ang kunin mo atleast gitna yun ng old Canon 400D and Canon 450D and atleast versatile pa ang 1000D with its live view and less-noise ISO.
I think and D3000 kasi is nirelease ng Nikon para sa mga batang estudyante at newbies talaga.. meron pang live tutorial feature yun.. as in ginagawa kang engot :-D

I'm not familiar with Canon DSLR's din kasi mashado.
Dayum GAS!

the 500d is a good cam. problem is, the nikon d5000 is much better :-D the 500d was one of my choices against the d5000, i went with the d5000 because of "research" and experience, (tried both) the image quality and iso performance of the d5000 is equal to that of the d90's. but that doesn't really matter
@kurtcobainer: 1000d is a GREAT cam. sobrang worth the price na yan. no match ang d3000 against the 1000d :-D

yung 500D na nasa mid-range bracket eh ang baby brother ng Canon 7D (which is the hot high end-range canon DSLR right now) and in fairness naman eh di ko sya maicocompare sa Nikon D5000 which is like apples and oranges.. tama si dudeofdude na the D5000 share a lot with its "Kuya" Nikon D90 such as the HD Video capture (almost the same pixels) except na hindi "swivel LCD" ang D90 but ofcourse much advance ang features and controls ng D90.. not to mention the ISO.. pero sa video capture eh wala silang pinagkaiba..
so kung feel mo ang 500D eh go for it since mas prefer ko sya kesa sa D5000 na maganda nga with the swivel LCD pero mas nagiging "fragile" naman sya..
and Paulo mas maganda nga na brand new Canon 1000D nalang ang kunin mo at sure ako di ka magsisisi! heheheh pustahan tayo after 6 months eh mag uupgrade ka! hehehe ibang klaseng GAS ang photography!
:-D

@rockophoria: 500d is entry-level, 7d's baby bro is the 50d. the d5000 and d90 share the exact same sensor, they have the same ISO performance. i really wish i could have saved up a little more and got the d90 though, anglaking ginhawa ng lcd screen pati dedicated buttons sa taas ng d90. :-D
@turi: i pm'd you back at the other site :-D

ay oo nga I forgot.. may 50D pa
in the case of the D5000 and D90 ISO range I kinda find the D90's ISO sensitivity more fluid specially with a prime lens in low light.. or baka hindi ko lang gaano nalaro ng husto ang D5000 since isang beses lang ako nakahawak nun..
and yes the controls of the D90 are the best feature nya and tama ka rin high-resolution ang LCD screen nya and syempre mas high end sya so meron syang in-body autofocus motor, both have live view though madalang ko gamitin yun.. most of the time sa video lang but sa snapshots kahit na overhead eh tinatantsa ko nalang since pag naka on ang live view ng D90 eh may split second delay bago pumalo ang shutter.. sinasara kasi muna nya ang live view bago mag expose ang sensor..

hehe yung benta kong D90 dati brand new din yun.. with 28-200mm lens 53k nabili yung body lang (45k) so naiwan sakin yung Sigma 28-200mm lens.. im still thinking if ill ship another D90 for myself or get the semi-DSLRs like the Panasonic Lumix LX-3 or the new popular Panasonic Lumix GF-1..
kaso yung price ng GF-1 eh sing-price na ng brand new D90 kit (with 18-105mm kit lens).. so napapaisip nanaman ako.. ang convenience lang ng semi-DSLRs eh handy sya and not to mention the vintage/old-skul camera looks nya.. hehehe
this type of cameras are gaining ground this days kasi mechanical shutter din sya para syang maliit ng DSLR minus the weight and bulk.. easily fits like a condom in your pocket :-D
haay anghirap magdecide! sabi ko balik point and shoot na ako but nung makita ko itong GF1 eh parang the magic is back..
the form of a Point and Shoot with the capability and power of a DSLR.. :|

Oh my goodness!!! :-o Please, no. I have too much GAS. This DSLR cam is my last GAS for 2009.
Thanks a lot for the help guys! I'l try both the D3000 & 1000D para mai-compare ko both.
Checking it as well.
Alala ko lang, a nurse friend of mine bought a D90 kit + a different kind of lens umabot sya ng 95k. Wow! Talk about GAS!
Joseph yung kaibigan ko (philmusic member: ihopethisnamecounts) may Panasonic Lumix FZ50 check mo yung mga shots nya dito: http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,161932.0.html
I think Nikon D90 na gamit nya ngayon eh.

I'll also ask Kimstore if meron syang makukunan na brand new D40x or D60, hehehe.

(pero di ko sinubukan) yun yung maima-mount mo ng baligtad yung lens mo to make it "macro" :-D

Update lang:
I finally decided to get the Canon 1000D, I was really torn between the 2 (D3000 & 1000D). But benta sakin yung live view eh. Hmmmmm..
Yeah. i even saw some over 100k. I never thought they existed. I guess people really spend for things like the way others would spend for guitars and pedulz. :-P

Hehehe, the Darkside is strong on this one  Tama ka nga, my next target are: Macro lenses & that cute Crumpler bag I saw sa Megamall or that NatGeo bag dun sa Island Photo.
The lenses & the accessories are all lovely! Dayum! I'm now contemplating on selling some of my stuff to buy macro lenses :| I may end up using Multi-effects nalang.
By the way, aside fromm photoworldmanila, saan pa ba may workshops on basic & advanced photography?

for me must have yung mga basic accessories like bag, tripod etc. para safe din yung camera at lenses mo.

isang lumang Zoom 707-II  heheheheh
Hahaha, malamang ganyan din kababagsakan ko multi-effects. :-D

Eto kaya pwedeng macro lens? http://madmax168.multiply.com/photos/album/100/Auto_Extension_Tube_Set_DG_for_Nikon_and_Canon

I finally decided to get the Canon 1000D, I was really torn between the 2 (D3000 & 1000D). But benta sakin yung live view eh. Hmmmmm..
wow...you are super adik to the photography you sold your gears...in my case...I can't do photography without music. I listen to my ipod while I shoot and then when I get home those image and sounds help me with playing my gears too.
I didn't sell my music gear naman bro I just minimized spending too much sa guitar gear. Happy naman ako sa current setup eh. So ung mga savings, it goes to photography stuff kasi kailangan eh.

(syempre without the advanced controls/settings top LCD tsaka in a small package)
:-D :-D

un nga eh, mas beginner friendly din daw kasi ung nikon but still, ung mga ibang features kasi ng canon nakakahili sakin ng konti, though feel ko d ko rin nmn magagamit for now cguro un (like ung 1080p 20fps video) mas mahal pa ng konti ung canon, kaya leaning towards nikon ako.. still need some opinions na magpupush sakin over the fence

dude, ano choices mo? 500d vs d5000? choices ko rin yan, went for the d5000. nikon kills canon, canon just has better marketing. nagsisisi lang ako na dapat d90 binili ko imbis na d5000. malaking tulong kasi yung mga dedicated buttons pati top lcd screen ng d90, plus nagaautofocus siya sa non-afs lenses. pero its not a big deal, d5000 is essentially a d90 in a more compact, affordable body. nikon talaga :)) if you decide to go for the canon, its still an excellent camera, seriously, so win-win situation ka kahit anong mangyari :-D

kanya kanyang preferences lang yan..
ako I started with Canon EOS 1000f Film SLR nung college days ko.. and I loved that camera na pag aari na ng tropa ko ngayon.
nakagamit na rin ako ng old nikon SLRs (yung bakal pa yung body at yung aperture eh kino-control mo via the "aperture ring" sa base ng lens at hindi sa body), parehas lang naman ang feel.. yung tunog pa ng shutter nun eh parang gatilyo ng baril (without the BANG ofcourse).
then a year and half ago eh I returned to photography starting with the D40 and eventhough nakagamit ako ng Canon 400D tsaka Canon 450D eh I chose to keep the D40 hanggang I decided to sell it a month ago to return to point and shoot.. (haay panasonic lumix gf1).. pero isip pa.. konti pa :|

Went to Pixel Pro and bought a Tripod, sayang walang silang Flash Diffuser:( Anyways, next target: Lens Hood, Battery Grip, Macro Extension Tubes
Question lang, yung extension tubes ba pwedeng substitute for Macro Lens? May nakita ako sa Multiply eh.
Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality.
The DG extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and film plane. By moving the lens father away from the film or CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus.
The KENKO DG AUTO EXTENSION TUBE SET contains three tubes of different length, a 12 mm, 20 mm, and 36 mm, which can be used individually or in any combination to obtain the desired magnification. Kenko also makes a DG UNITUBE 12 mm or 25 mm which can be purchased individually.
Sayang, meron pa sana mas mura kaya lang out of stock :-(

CDSC is the local distributor of Nikon products.

Yes, I know. But I'd rather get a mid-level DSLR than an enrty-level DSLR. Ok lang sakin kahit walang video capacity. The megapixels aren't an issue as well. Right now, ang options ko are the Canon 40D or the Nikon D90.

regarding actuations, any decent EXIF reader application should do.. i think some photoediting softwares also has EXIF readers.. i currently use an EXIF reader sa PC sa bahay pero di ko maalala kung anong exact name nung application.. will find out mamya pag uwi ko..

Yung pwedeng malayuan
Hmmm ganyan din ang hilig ko. Mejo mahirap yung ganyan.
Hope this helps. http://www.thephotoargus.com/tips/useful-tips-for-shooting-in-low-light-situations/

IMO kailangan talaga ng filters bro. Protection to ng lente mo against scratches, dusts, etc. Kahit UV filter lang.Or you can try skylight filters. It will not do anything to your shots. Significant that is. :-)
Personally, kapag nakalabas ang camera ko, lens cap ALWAYS stays in the bag. Filters, ALWAYS fitted. That's me though.
Hope this helps. :-D

Meron bang UV filters na may effect sa shots? Like what if I want to take shots during the daytime?

better let the lens stay on the body saves time and hassle when you want to take pictures. also prevents possible intrusion of dust when you attach your lens

@kurtcobainer,
Colored filters, from what I know are more useful when you're shooting black and white film. Pero meron din namang mga Polarizing filters... Makes pictures a bit clearer when shooting scenes with reflections..
For everyday shooting (color), I use skylight 1B. Parang light pink sya. Very very sutle pink. Neutralizes the blues... That's only as far as I know... Beginner lang din ako bro... :-D

i think lahat ng uv filters pare-pareho lang, dapat wala siya effect sa shots maliban sa as the name suggests, pag filter ng uv light. sabi ng iba pangit yung mumurahin na uv filter. i have tried sunpack and massa for my uv filters. so far ok naman.

@smoke4twenty The D3000 would be great para sa budget mo. May assistance sa menus, so you can quickly familiarize yourself with basic DLSR functions. Very 'basic' body siya, kaya at least malalaman mo later on kung anong features ang talagang kailangan mo when you decide to upgrade. (I use one) But by all means, kung kaya mo din naman mag-D90, yun na.
@doremi: Kung maka-Nikon ka naman to start with, stay with what you've already tried. (I know, medyo biased ako. Nikon user din ako. Haha.)

If you want to get the 1000D, bilhin mo na bro. Between the 1000D & D3000, 1000D na 'ko bro. I'm sure ganun din sasabihin ng iba dito. Pero, if you'll have the chance to try both cameras, subukan mo din. Para ma-evaluate mo mismo sa sarili mo. If I were you, save up and get a D90  Nagmu-mura na sya ngayon.

I'm thinking of getting one yung 15,500 kaya lang sabi nga sakin mahina daw yung 150w eh. What do you guys recommend? Also when it comes to flash units, ano ang magagandang brand? I remembed during my advanced workshop our professor mentioned and let us use some hi-end flash units pero SOOOBRANG mahal naman!

I am torn between buying these stuff: Apple iPad 16gig, UWA lens (Tokina 11-16 f2.8) or Nikon D300s.
1. Apple iPad - I'll use it for music, photography & business stuff. Portfolio, guitar tablatures, etc etc. 2. Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 - Because I like wide-angled photography. 3. Nikon D300s - I want to upgrade. 4. Tay Hua Studio Flash set includes: 3pcs. HD300 (300W) Compact Studio Flash 2pcs. LS-220 Light Stand 6ft 1pcs. LS-802 Light Stand 3ft 2pcs. Softbox 50x70cm 1pcs. Snoot 1pcs. Reflector Umbrella 36" (Black/Silver) 1pcs. 5in1 Round Reflector 80cm/32inch 1pcs. A004 Studio Bag
Which should I get? :?

here's my take :-D
Top 3 1.) tokina 11-16 2.) flash Studio set 3.) Apple ipad
you're using D90 diba? its not a significant upgrade going to d300s. same lahat ang pinag kaiba lang nya ay, fps, weather sealed. but you're still getting the same when it comes to IQ.
1.) reason for tokina, sa tingin ko mas magagamit at ma eenjoy mo sya. indoors, outdoors. and now you have a reason to travel. :-D
2.) ok din sya, im assuming you have a big studio. kung magagamit mo ito ng madalas (indoor or outdoor man) sige go.
3.) if you have a laptop , wag na. or iphone / itouch. but if you deal with clients regularly in a coffee meeting or presentations. may pogi points ang iPad.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
Talaga? My friend also told me to wait for the upcoming models of Nikon. Hindi nga daw ganun kasignificant yung upgrade from D90 to D300s. Thanks! i'm considering that.
I might need another camera body for that as well. Can you suggest other lenses na maganda for events? Ayaw ko nung mga telephoto na f3.5-5.6. If possible sana f2 or 2.8 for Nikon.
Flash Studio set. I don't have a big studio but as I've stated earlier, gagamitin namin ito for events (graduations, weddings, photoshoots, etc). Mahina daw kasi yung 150w eh kaya 300w yung kukunin ko.
The iPad. I have a laptop pero luma na sya (Dual Core lang sya) pero ok pa naman sa editing pics. I don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch (not really into these things, kuntento nako sa iPod video ko). Kaya lang nai-intriga ako sa iPad eh, kailangan ko pa mag-basa-basa ng mga reviews about this.
Title: Re: Which DSLR/gear to buy?

get the tokina 11-16mm if you can. then take a look at Tokina SD 50-135 F2.8 DX AT-X PRO.. maganda yan check reviews online. (im planning to get this too) gamit rin ni gainsucker yan. mid range telephoto. im assuming di mo naman kailangan ng 70-200. so enough na yan...
re flash set , if you need to setup shots(themes, etc..) then you need this for sure. but if its for documenting events then a fast lens and a couple flash will do.
re iPad, i suggest just upgrade your laptop wag kana mag iPad.. get a 2010 MBP 13in. entry level will cost around 60k, intel i3 (i think).

you cant go wrong with both.. matagal ng nalabas ang LX3 at G10. pero hanggang ngayon maganda parin ang reviews nyan. so the net reviews you read are pretty accurate. depende na lang sayo talaga at budget mo.

regarding your second question, no doubt you have to switch to Canon. ang entry level nila na DSLR with video capability na matino ay 550D. if you have money to burn mag 7D kana. around 60k used.
another suggestion, para gumanda yung kuha mo sa D5000, mag palit ka ng lens. ok ang nikon 50mm 1.8 na lens sa video. at mura lang. if you have money, get the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm 1.4.

parang mas ok nga video recording ng canon, bibili kase utol ko and video recording capability is high on her priority list, so no prob going the canon route. oks naman ako sa pics ng d5000 bitin lang talaga sa video, thanks sa suggestion sa lens, will try it soon.

Title: Re: Which DSLR/gear to buy?

Kasi kung picture quality lang din naman ang habol mo.. the Nikon D40 fares better than the Nikon D3000 specially sa ISO range and digital noise reduction (based on experience).
Kung video naman ang trips mo eh tama si Paulo (kurtcobainer) na mag Canon ka dahil expertise nila ang video since before they started to excel in making DSLRs (which Nikon already reigned supreme).. kunin mo either Canon 550D (Entry-Level) or the Canon 60D (Prosumer-Level) if video quality ang hanap mo..
Pero kung Photo quality naman with video as a bonus eh mag Nikon 5000 (Entry-Level) ka or Nikon D90 (Prosumer-Level)..
if you have enough money to burn naman and wanted the current iPhone of the DSLR world.. mag Nikon D7000 ka na heheheh (Almost-Semi Pro Level) L-D

Problema lang phase-out na ang D40. Good luck finding a D40 na mababa pa actuation. Betweeb the D3000 and 1000D, I'd go with the latter.

I think ang brandnew na D90 kit is still @ 43-45k+. Ang brandnew ng D5000 kit is 29-30k+. But you can get a 2nd hand D90 body for 39-33k eh. depende sa mga kasama sa package.

Yup, bought my Canon 1000D from them back when they still had a stall @ St. Francis Sq. Plus very reliable nga sila. If the G2 is bigger than the GF-1, I think LX5 nalang ako since I already have a DSLR.

Parang ngayon they're comparing d7000 sa 7d parang hindi fair kase 7d was released more than a year bago yung d7000 at wala sila sa same league.

200mm f2 is not a zoom lens. It is a prime lens. The 200mm is an excellent portrait lens and sports lens since it is fast at f2. You get nice bokeh but if you need versatility, go for the 70-200mm f2.8.

I've been focusing on wedding and portraits recently. I want to ask you guys which is better for this type of photography?
I've been advised to stay away from 3rd party lenses but I've read & watched some good reviews of the Sigma.
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM APO DG MACRO II or the AF Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 ED???
I can't afford the 70-200 VR II and I don't mind if there's no OS or VR.

yan din pinagpipilian ako. as with the reviews, ok yung sigma hsm II, mabilis AF and mas mura. compared sa nikkor 80-200 na mas sharp, ganda ng colors and mas ok ang bokeh. kung simple weddings and portraits ok na ung nikkor, pero kung sports mas recommended ang sigma dahil mabilis ang AF. ang mahal kasi ng 70-200 VRII at hirap ng humanap ng VR1 kahit secondhand.

and etong push-pull: (http://cameralensesworld.us/wp-content/uploads/Nikon_AF_Nikkor_80_200mm_f_2_8D_ED_Lens_01_ep.jpg)
mas bago ung hindi push-pull.
Yup, kaya lang I've read some BAD reviews on this lens. And sabi ni Ken Rockwell, hindi sya advisable for DX bodies.
And sabi ni Jared Polin ok sya for DX lens. Saw a review he made on YT on this lens where he used this lens on a D3000 (which was pretty convincing). I think eto nalang kukunin ko.

I was also thinking of getting that, pero na-uwi ako sa Nikkor 24-70mm, hehehe.
The only reason why I'm leaning towards the Sigma is that it's more advisable to use on a DX body. Mashado nang cropped yung 80mm para sakin @ 120mm. Whereas sa 70mm nasa 105mm lang sya. Plus consistent sya sa 24-70 ko, hehehe. But shempre, ang gusto ko sana ALL NIKON ang lens ko, kaya lang SOOOOBRANG mahal naman nung 70-200 nila  Maybe, I still have to do more research on the 80-200, hehehehe.

i shoot more landscapes kasi kaya im leaning towards the 17-55 over the 24-70 lalo pat DX body palang gamit ko..pero lets see iba pa din ang my nano crystal coat hehe
un na nga sir, maganda talaga all nikon lens line up :) you can try the 80-200 naman, then kung di mo magustuhan you can always sell it then kuha ka ng sigma, or try the other way around, sigma muna then pag ayaw nikkor na. mahal kasi talaga nung 70-200 ng nikkor e, kahit VR 1 mahal pa din.. :-(

sigma 70-200 hsm II un sir, sakto merong last unit dun sa napuntahan ko dito. hindi ko gusto ung yellowish color contrast ng mga kuha ko and hindi siya ganun kasharp wide open kahit sakto yung focus mo. i dont know siguro pangit yung unit na natest ko, hindi good copy.

Ahh, sabi nung 1 friend ko sharpest daw nya is at f4. Yung kanya naman may tinge of magenta.

kurtcobainer, congrats on your 80-200. how is it?
how's the DOF dyan? i just got an 85mm and am wondering how to increase ung DOF- for low light concert photography (small gigs). kasi onting galaw lang ng subject may chance mablur. iroad-test ko ung saken sa sabado and baka may tips kayo.. :)

voltz, 1.8f ba or 1.4f ang apperture ng 85mm mo ? shoot at 1.8 or 1.4 to get DoF...
para hindi ma blur ang shots mo sa low light, boost the ISO and shoot at the smallest f stop number (around 2.8 pababa) tapos a faster shutter speed. Manual mode ako palagi. if hirap ka try mo sa Shutter priority settings. pag madilim, adjust mo yung exposure setting.
trial and error lang.
