Ripped from the October issue of Guitar Player
large 400%
Investing in distortion boxes instead of a good amp.
Learning 100 intros and no songs.
Limiting yourself to one style of music-usually metal.
Not taking the time to learn music theory.
Playing "Smoke on the Water" on the high-E string.
Playing too loud, and with too much distortion.
Setting your amp's Gain on 10, and Mids on 0.
Relying on picks.
Not learning how to perform a basic setup.
Not maintaining your gear.
Not jamming enough with other players.
Over use of legato with a complete disregard for tempo.
Poor phrasing.
Weak vibrato.
Buying too many effects.
Listening to tone snobs.
Immediately launching into thirty-second-notes during a blues solo.
Thinking that playing the local bar circuit constitutes a "tour."
Believing that opening for a national act means you're on your way.
Not knowing the difference between tube watts and solid-state watts.
Relying too much on printed music and tabs.
Thinking a year of lessons and $5,000 worth of gear makes you ready to play in a band.
Wearing the guitar way too low.
Using too much hand/finger pressure when fretting.
Taking guitar lessons from a friend.
Giving up immediately because you sound like dog doo.
Not learning how all your gear works.
Tuning every guitar at Guitar Center to dropped D, and then not retuning them to standard pitch.
Bringing full stacks to tiny bar gigs.
Saying "All [insert hated style of music] sucks, dude!"
Learning with your eyes, instead of your ears.
Not learning to play in time with good groove and feel.
Not investing in good earplugs for playing loud gigs.
Obsessing about playing burning solos, and not caring about rhythm guitar.
Thinking that playing fast pentatonic-box patterns makes you a hot guitarist.
Not putting casters on viciously heavy amps.
Wearing bowling shirts emblazoned with flames and dragons.
Realizing guitar is too difficult and taking up bass instead.
Spending more time on Harmony Central than actually practicing.
Forgetting that playing music is meant to be fun.

o yan may guide na! :-D

-
(I really based on what I read and heard from my musician relatives)
tsaka yung wearing your guitar too low.. mababa talaga ang gitara ko.. though di naman ako nahihirapan.. siguro sa picking style or kahit kasi nagpapraktis akoi magisa eh nakatayo ako.. I dunno..
and yung not jamming enough with others.. masyado akong nagiging centralize sa mga compo ko.. (though I need to learn a lot from others..)
hmm ano pa ba?

lets see which am i guilty of when i took guitar seriously:

Hey, I am a piano player by foundation so what did I know? Things have worked out well though and I learned a lot by going to concerts, taking lessons and playing along with records.

Hhahaha!! Nangyari sa akin ito. Kaya umabot ako once almost 15 mins sa gig trying to find out which one of my pedals isn't working. Yun pala baliktad lang!!! Anak ng puch...
Which leads me to mistake #15:
Buying too many pedals....
-
Its kinda harsh, but its true. :-(
Yung masaklap talaga yung taking guitar lessons from a friend... Panu yan yung friend ko nag influence saken? Chempre basically sa kanya galing first few "lessons" ko. ^_^

Limiting yourself to one style of music (in my case blues... pero lahat naman ng blues-influenced styles inaaral ko)
Not taking the time to learn music theory.
Not maintaining your gear (tamad ako maglinis!).
Buying too many effects.
Listening to tone snobs.
Not learning how all your gear works.
Not investing in good earplugs for playing loud gigs. (pero meron na ngayon)
Obsessing about playing solos, and not caring about rhythm guitar. (guilty!)
Spending more time on Harmony Central (+ TGP, PhilMusic) than actually practicing.
Forgetting that playing music is meant to be fun.
-
bangis ng thread na ito! you think you know everything pero kulang padin...
Investing in distortion boxes instead of a good amp. <--- ito padin pinaka mali ko... wala pa akong tube amp hanggang ngayon ung bass amp ko padin ang gamit ko for my electric guitar... wahahaha!
-
Investing in distortion boxes instead of a good amp.
Bwahahahaha!

Top 40 Newbie Mistakes--->learning so much to be arrogant than to be humble
I've seen so many newbies who tends to be so arrogant but they really sucks at strings,... bigtime kasi? could be ....cause they possess great gears but plays damn rotten, parang wala silang karapatan gamitin mga signature gears na yun... then sa labas ng gig...maka yosi at maka asta kala mo sikat na...oi oi oi...ang bolang alam nyo pingpong palang pero maka asta na kayo kala mo basketball na ang hawak nyo!

"Obsessing about playing burning solos, and not caring about rhythm guitar."
yari ako dito ah..
dami pa ako..hehehe..siguro 39 ako...wahahahahaha
apir* :-D
-
through the help of this thread, i was finally convinced that it is better to spend more time on practicing and studying music theory with less gear instead of wasting time tweaking a load of effects for days and not being able to learn to complete even a single song.
my next GAS would probably be just several packs of strings,a tremol-no, jazz3 picks and several cans of wd40 and pledge. :-D
-
Not taking the time to learn music theory.

sus 4= sustain 4 :-D
-
sus 4= sustain 4 :-D
Yeah, i know a lot of people who mistake the Sus as sustained when the sus actually reffers to the suspended 4th which causes the suspended sound of the chord.
This misconception has become so rampant a guitar teacher once corrected me saying "It's not suspended 4th, it's sustained 4th!" :-D
-
blaming the guitars' string/fret hi-action
well how in the heck YJM did it?

Good thing at naputol pala ang internet connection namin. :-D
-
Limiting yourself to one style of music-usually metal.
IMO, I don't see anything wrong limiting yourself to metal. A lot of metal guitarists are talented and incorporates a lot of styles in their playing from classical to jazz-fusion. Metal is basically a combination of many musical elements i.e. blues, classical, jazz etc. so you'll surely learn a lot even if you just limit yourself to metal. Maybe what the Guitar Player author really meant was NU metal?
-

-
i must say, I'm a NOOB..haha
-
I am still a n00b considering i been playing for almost 10 years and so far i know i am good but not as good as a lot of people like Richie Kotzen or Perf De Castro (cause they can create their own music means own original materials not cover etc.), i always look at it that way to improve my guitar playing.
Anyway i will not look up to people whom does not look in the mirror and not practising what they preach.
-
parang nabasa ko 'to sa mag. ko hehehe...sir bamf eto nga ba yung magazine na may interview kay steve vai? ehehehe...20 of them hindi ko pa nababago noob pa nga ako :-)

Maybe coz friends are more forgiving of your mistakes and will try to himas nicely for fear that they might lose your friendship.
Another reason is that if you take your lessons from friends, it will be free. And if you take it for free, you won't take it seriously. Masakit man but I learned more from teachers who I paid good money to teach me. Kasi, me time pressure ako. I had to do my exercises religiously coz it was my money I was spending (or wasting hehehe). In hindsight, they might feel let down if they heard me play today mwahahaha.

this one's definitely true. Although, I have been taking lessons from my friend and have been paying for it in cash. I told him that I will not accept the lessons for free and that he should be properly compensated for the time and effort he is giving and going to give. .... been practicing whenever possible as well... a couple of hours in the morning and several more hours in the evening when i get home from work... lol...

Okay lang yan. What's important is you accept your shortcomings and improve on it.
Tapos pag may pumansin or mag-point out ng mali, mamasamain pa :-D

solid sa puso eh!!! ouch!

sapul ako dun sa playing too loud and with too much distortion.....

guilty ako sa...music theory - coz i don't know how to squeeze it to my schedule
and most specially...not knowing the concepts of...
1) the 'amp' in line with 'distortion pedals'
and
2) pick-ups (single coil v.s. humbuckers)
maybe coz i'm not really exposed sa gigging scene.. that i learned it only after getting busy with 'life'..
still...
i think i'm still in-between a newbie & an intermediate guitar player.
br & God bless

Anyway kahit isa sa mga nabanggit, may tinamaan.. we are not perfect.. :)
Hindi ko babaguhin yung RELYING ON PICKS.. :)

I feel old...
-
dagdagan to... hahahaha
-volume/tone all the way up on guitars
-never even bother move the pickup switch (if theres any)
-lagi max distortions in almost any genre
-pag gig payabangan sa set ng pedals dala lahat kahit d gagamitin (yung wlang board) :3

talaga. ito yung mga hindi nawala:

Tingin ko yung relying on picks is not necessarily a bad thing. If you like how it sounds pag me pick ka edi na sayo na yun. IMO ok yung walang picks is blues.
-
i dont get it brothers, how is "relying on picks" a noob mistake? depende siguro sa tugtugan?
-
relying on picks pag nag paplucking siguro
-
I cant do plucking while using a pick.. :-(

with all due respect to the moderator who posed reality to all of us,
i mean, we all were NEWBIE's..
nobody learned how to drive a car the first time
since we were then newbie's, therefore, we will never learn how to "play" guitar the first time.
i would like to see that list as a measurement of how much as i have progressed rather than see it as alist of newbie mistakes.
i was a student of mr. aaron dignos
and he once taught me to make mistakes
he wouldn't be a guitar instructor if he hadn't made the same mistakes on that list.
So go on people,
keep making mistakes
cause, we will never know what our true potentials if we will never learn from our mistakes..
AMEN!!! :-o

Tama. We all had our first times. Newbies are bound to make mistakes.

well, i dont really do much plucking so di ko sya naiisip na "noob mistake", anyway i think thats more on preference, i know a guy who freakin' shreds with his finger nails!
i once saw this music teacher back in my yupangco days, SUPER HALIMAW sa plucking!! he is a clasiscal guitar player, grabe, ang galing! yung walang pick un pero halimaw talaga, nag sweep using a nylon classical guitar!
siguro noob mistake is to take other peoples preference and make it your own, getting advice is okay and helpful, yes, you use it as reference, mas masarap yung pinag hirapan mo ung technique, develop your own preference and tone through experience. :)
-
Learn from our mistakes and practice makes perfect.
-
hehe i think what the relying on picks meant putting your trust in a Pick of Destiny that instantly makes you better.
i also disagree to keep making mistakes, respectfully ofcourse.
someone had made that 40 mistakes sometime in their life, we don't have to keep making the same mistakes to prove a point.
what i do agree is learning on our mistakes, and to not be let down in case we make one
-
Mistakes can only be wrong if you haven't learned anything from it... ^-^
-

That's what I think...

1. Neglecting the use of a Metronome
2. Too fixated on a style without even studying the theory behind it thinking that it is a ''shortcut'' to playing fast (eg Yngwie style)
3. Cramming as much as cover songs, licks and exercises as you can without even incorporating them into your own playing

Learning 100 intros and no songs.
Not learning how to perform a basic setup.
Natatakot ako galawin yung neck baka masira
Over use of legato with a complete disregard for tempo.
I'm currently working on this. Pero dati ang philosophy ko ay basta nasa timing ang unang note and the last few notes sa legato run Ok na yun hehe.
Learning with your eyes, instead of your ears.

Wrong use and motion of vibrato, I really hate it.
Guilty ako sa learning 100 intos and no song.
Stopped playing wit band many years ago.. Nawalan ako ng dahilan.
Since then naging mabagal ang progress ko.

kaya minsan good thing yung may recording interface ka e. You record your own, seek for more improvement on the song you have made while listening to it. haha. kahit wala ka banda, there's still a chance to improve yourself. kaya yan ang GAS ko ngayon. di palang mapermit ng budget.

GAS is really bad for us. Last year, I have a big ass pedal board, sold a couple pedals and settled to a smaller setup to fund my GAS for a jazzmaster. Until now, I cannot find a decent jazzmaster na pasok sa budget

I don't think there's something wrong with this. I mean, Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson play pentatonics fast. I guess, you just have to play "Clean" fast pentatonics.
But that's just my opinion though. :-P
