Let us start the new year with a new community/club: the BLUESMEN DELUXE. Hopefully this thread will help Blues newbies, Aficionados, listeners or even musicians to know more about each other and also the passion that we have. we can talk about anything Blues, from Chicago to Delta Blues..

so guys, the Blues ain't nothin, so lets keep on rollin'!

Love da bluessss though I must say I've got tons to learn compared to the hardcore bluesmen here.

recently purchased a BB King DVD w 2 CDs sulit na sulit!

He told the story that he ended up playing the blues coz that's when the people gave tips compared to when they asked him to play gospel tunes :-)

Eric 'slow hands' Clapton gave me another look on the Blues, his development and change made me believe that whatever guitar you have, as long as you have the blues, there's nothing you can lose.. (parang kanta noh?)

let's set an EB. parang continuation ng Blues Buddah Jams.. whattayasay?

i've been into this type of music ever since mid 80s....shows my age..ha??!?

my uncles and their kumpares would always listen to clapton albums during family reunions. "bellbottom blues" "laydown sally" "wonderful tonight"...mga pang adik hehe kasi mga adik at lasenggero mga tito ko noon...hehe

my dad was into santana. my mom was into elvis and the beatles. we had ray charles albums in the house.... pero di naman sila hippie lol. mahilig lang talaga sa ganung tugtugan.

then my older bro who had a friend from a jazz radio station took me to see ray charles and bb king play at the philip morris jazz event in folk arts.

but i was a pianist...so i wanted to be like ray charles. hehe. learned the blues scale (key of C) from the movie "great balls of fire" ....so i was hooked.

learned guitar 1st year college.........and now im a guitar player in a vegas showband playing PCD and ciara. ang galing!

we have to have blues bands to play, and in between sets we'll have jams, games, a little trivia, 'chika-chika-getting to know' etc..

ps (plugging sandali): may gig ang Jook Jam sa Hobbit House tomorrow, Sat, 930pm. nood kayo kung blues na galing sa lupa din trip nyo. :-)

@the_nong,
to be honest mas favor kasi sa QC since mukhang mas marami ang taga dun (like me... :-D). i agree na sana may blues talk from our blues apostle at sana available sila for those kind of stuffs. :mrgreen:

btw, im sure d naman kailangan banggitin pero open naman to sa lahat ng musikero right? i mean di lang gitarista ang pwede sumali.

napansin ko kasi, halos ng nag-post gitarista. analogy lang naman, bihira para sa mga drummer at bassists na maging mahilig sa blues kasi you have to admit very monotonous ang ginagawa nila sa mga 12 bar.

mismong kaibigan ko na kanong drummer na napaka-galing tumogs sinabi nya sakin, ayaw nya ng blues! lol pero tongue in cheek nyang sinabi yun kasi naman naiintindihan ko yung sinasabi nya kahit na di ako drummer.

still....tom bretchlein and roscoe beck from robben ford's blue line band are monsters. i read an article that vinnie colauita even subbed once for a gig. bagay pa din ang ginagawa nila. interesting ways to play shuffles. which is ideal for a trio, coz you gotta fill up them spaces.

sa local scene....wendell garcia who played with blue rats on occasion was always dreaming up ways to play his signature groove. parati akong nakanganga pag tumogs sa rats yun. si na ako nakakatugtog.

although as true as it may seem, most forumers here in Pinoy Bluesmen Deluxe are guitarists, but we welcome all! from keyboardists, drummers, horn peeps, and bassists.. still the Blues is the Blues.

Blues is a vocal and instrumental form of music based on the use of the blue notes. It emerged as an accessible form of self-expression in African-American communities of the United States from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads.[1] The use of blue notes and the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics are indicative of African influences.

The blues influenced later American and Western popular music, as it became the roots of jazz, rhythm and blues, bluegrass and rock and roll. In the 1960s and 1970s, a hybrid form called blues rock developed from the combining of blues with various rock and roll forms.

The phrase "the blues" is a reference to the the Blue Devils, meaning "down" spirits, melancholy, and sadness. An early reference to "the blues" can be found in George Colman's one act farce Blue devils (1798).

Though the use of the phrase in African American music may be older, it has been attested to since 1912, when Hart Wand's "Dallas Blues" became the first copyrighted Blues composition. In lyrics the phrase is often used to describe a depressed mood.

There are few characteristics common to all blues, because the genre takes its shape from the idiosyncrasies of individual performances. However, there are some characteristics that were present long before the creation of the modern blues. An early form of blues-like music were call-and-response shouts, which were a "functional expression... style without accompaniment or harmony and unbounded by the formality of any particular musical structure." A form of this pre-blues was heard in slave field shouts and hollers, expanded into "simple solo songs laden with emotional content". The blues, as it is now known, can be seen as a musical style based on both European harmonic structure and the African call-and-response tradition, transformed into an interplay of voice and guitar.

Many blues elements, such as the call-and-response format and the use of blue notes, can be traced back to the music of Africa. The Diddley bow, a homemade one-stringed instrument found in parts of the American South in the early twentieth century, and the banjo are African-derived instruments that may have helped in the transfer of African performance techniques into the early blues instrumental vocabulary. Blues music later adopted elements from the "Ethiopian airs", minstrel shows and Negro spirituals, including instrumental and harmonic accompaniment.The style also was closely related to ragtime, which developed at about the same time, though the blues better preserved "the original melodic patterns of African music". The blues form itself bears no resemblance to the melodic styles of the West African griots, and the influences are faint and tenuous. And no specific African musical form can be identified as the single direct ancestor of the blues.

Blues songs from this period, such as Lead Belly's or Henry Thomas's recordings, show many different structures. The twelve-, eight-, or sixteen-bar structure based on tonic, subdominant and dominant chords became the most common forms. What is now recognizable as the standard 12-bar blues form is documented from oral history and sheet music appearing in African American communities throughout the region along the lower Mississippi River, in Memphis, Tennessee's Beale Street, and by white bands in New Orleans.

tama, we used to jam with the Blue Rats way back 1996-97 i think, sa mexicali alabang pag blues night.. hehehe.. long time ago. i was follwer of the breed before because of a common friend with Charlie Y hehehe, Johnny Besa na pala bassist, galing yan man, galing yan..

i have spoken to some establishments and most of them require a 'pricey' bar fine. now, i wanted us to have a great time, without feeling spending so much and be in a cozy place which most people are familiar with.

i have spoken to Alvin and i thought of making our Blues Night in BRI-IW, we have been playing there since last year and i find it cozy and 'at-homey' now that the stage is upstairs and the bar is downstairs, kinda reminds me of Club Dredd in Timog..hehehehe..

so bluesmen (and women), please help me make this event the way we wanted it to be. please let me know what day do you guys prefer: Saturday? Tuesday or Wednesday? let do this asap so i can have place reserved..

and let me know who'll be playing for the night let have 10 bands with at least 3 songs and max of 5. i'll start the line up with my band:

bro ok din sa genre bar sa cubao expo.ganda ng place.bri iw is a fine place as well as nine mile bar in kalayaan ave.ok yang ginagawa mo man.collaborate tau nina bjorn(changemynametojimi) at si chox(masterchoxter).
kung may banda lang ako na blues sama ako e.i might go there as a jammer/rhythm guitarist,haha.mag praktis muna ako. :-D

nang nag usap na kami ni alvin, biglang na fully-booked ang Bri-iw ng whole month of March. he suggested na May nalang daw sana para ma isabay sa anniversary ng Bri-iw. it a good idea, but i think it will be that too long. so i thought pwede tayo mag gig sa April, then another sa anniversary ng Bri-iw on May.. pero still, anu sa tingin niyo?

i wont be playing the guitar na (i had it put to rest), instead, i'll play the bass (bassist na uli). but when listening to the blues, it has always make me want to grab a strat and pour those emotions with it.. but.. hindi eh... hehehehe, anyway, see you guys there!!!

maybe we can help this man to vent out his blues by playing the blues?i think he may be the best guitarist i know.walang sariling gitara to pero i think he can make any guitar his tone machine.pwede ko ba isabak to sa inyo?tambay sa malapit sa bri to.hehehe.

as long as we got the Blues, there's no reason for us to lose. everybody is welcome! some of the main objectives of the Pinoy Bluesmen Deluxe is to spread the music (Blues) and make people understand our 'EMO' and it's origins and another is to welcome all bluesmen.. or women or children.

NOTE:

guys, if you have things for sale, bring it! guitars, gears, accessories, etc. basta kayo bahala sa poster or signage niyo. baka may mga may GAS ngayon, makatulong pa tayo..

i'll bring my pedals and my Bass Guitar for sale.

Oo naman Ser! Yun nga ang tlgang maganda mangyari parang regular na Jam place na lang ng mga blues players and enthusiasts. Basta regular na yan every saturday Blues night. Hindi na tayo mag papa sign up ng band na dadating just come kahit na individuals will be able to jam onstage. Baka maghanda rin ako ng mga backing tracks for soloists to choose from kung wala silang kasama. Hehe..

i have been offered a place where we, bluesmen, can hang-out, play music and jam on a certain day of the week twice a month.

Richie of Fatcjack Prod & I will talk to the bar-owners of the two prospective bars. one in Xavierville ave, one in Timog. we'll do some ocular too to see if we can fit and be cozy during weekdays. i'm proposing, Tuesday nights, is that ok?

we can come up with a place where we can all "our own" on certain days of the week na tipong alam mong may blues nights pag ganun araw and alam mong may mga kaibigan at ka-blues ka na naka-tambay dun. gawin nating every-other week or every month.

i just hope na may mag pupuno ng lugar, since we will not be charged for entrance or anything, patutugtugin pa tayo. un lang sana madami ang tumambay at habol lang nila, is ung sales. i hope you guys understand.

Bluesmen Deluxe peeps and Blues Brothers, what do you think? can we do this?

thanks bro, but we have spoken to a couple of bars na. finalization nalang. you dont have to form a band bro, pede tayong mag open jam. sana lang maraming bahista mag punta.. hehehe..

hahaha, Punk and Blues quite have feelings/attitude but they are two different entities for me. i have a pop punk band. but my roots are the Blues and Classic Rock (you can't blame me, it goes with age.. hehehehe)..

venue: TOMATO BOMB along Xavierville Ave. Q.C.
time: 8pm onwards.

fellow Bluesmen,

there will be no cover charge. the beer is fairly cheap and food is also available. the owners of the venue are kind enough to provide us a place we can call "our own" twice a month/every other Tuesdays of the month. in return, lets order food and drinks to make it okay. i can see that this can be the PROS of our gathering.

this can be the CONS(to others). PA system is provided, believe me they have good mics. they have some existing amps (borrowed) and it is a plus to bring your own amp. the drum set lacks a snare, high-hats & cymbals. if your drummer has a box, let 'em bring it.. or if you're a drummer, bring your gear and join the jam. since this is the Blues, we can do what we have and still feel/play the Blues..

suggestion/comments/violent reactions are welcome.

i will be putting up posters, gig announcements etc, before our event so please watch out!

thanks for the continued support and love for the Blues..

ok lang naman rock n roll, basta roots natin is blues. we cater to all forms of Blues, from chicago blues, delta blues, texas blues, southern rock, classic rock it doesn't matter basta it's form our roots, which is the Blues..

as posted target date is on July 6th, pede 4 to 5 songs. 5 bands the most at least 2. we're aiming to have a Blues night open jam. just be reminded of the "PROS & CONS" of out Blues Night..

blues night is supposed to be a night of blues music for blues musicians and afficionados... not really for other genres... if there are other genres that will be played during a blues night, then it defeats the purpose of having that name and theme for the event... i guess that explains it... but that last blues night was still a success because a lot of people came... though, not all of the jammers from the previous blues nights were able to jam... :-(

4 songs. kung may gamit drummer niyo like cymbals etc, ask him to bring it. of course, if you are particular with your sound, bring your own gear, like amp, effects and guitars (of course). because i don't know if the house amps would suit your taste.

the last blues night, the bands brought their own gamit. so swave ang flow. we started on time, we ended earlier with the performances so, mas mahaba ang open blues jamming sessions..

this time, may konting change, we will be having solo blues performers. maybe on october we'll have a solo or duo blues performers.. mmmm..

I thought it's going to include his former drummer, matt abts, of the government mule at magpapalit lng sya ng bass guitar since woody passed away.

anyway, thanks again for posting. di ko alam na merun na palang crossroads 2010. derek trucks' performance for crossroads 2007 was magnificent. especially when they did "anyday" by derek and the dominoes which happens to be clapton's band before. warren haynes should have been invited in the previous crossroads festival since the blues has always been the theme of this musicfest. sana lumabas na yung dvd.

Asking for expert's advice lang po for learning materials and necessity for Blues rock guitar. Hindi naman ako aiming to be a virtuoso kaya lang at least sana makuha ko yung feel ng licks nila Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, SRV , Johnny Winter and syempre si Mr. Sammy Asuncion and Mr. Tirson Rippoll. Any recommended materials / Albums or Singles / lessons and artist for me to check to shape my influence towardsd Blues and Rock?

So far kasi sa pag aaral ko ng Art of Blues ang natutunan ko lang ay ang idea ng 12-bar blues. yung mga pasungkit sungkit ng notes yun sana gusto ko matutunan. Ang tendency kasi pag nag aral ako ng scale is masunod sunod ko yung notes kaya I'm looking for materials na rin para ma motivate ako at hindi matengga sa pagsa sound trip lang ng blues sana one day e makaya ko rin yun mga simpleng paglalaro ng improvisation.

When it comes to tone, hingi na rin po ako ng advise (kakapalan ko na mukha ko mga sir pasensya na :-) )

Currently ang gamit ko ay Zoom G3 for modulation, Noise Suppressor ng Boss, Dyna Comp and SansAmp GT2 and TS9.. Yep I'm a long time novice player. Nagustuhan ko lang mag experiment ng tunog pero actually lumaki lang ako ng nag gigitara through Songhits (Jingle and Hothits) mas maganda sana if I could utilize those pedals pang blues idol na idol ko pa naman si KWS
