I also have an Electronica/Chill out alter-ego as Digital Cyco. I also pinch for other bands and do some work in our little private recording studio in Villamonte.

yup. we're hooked up for 8 track simultanous recording through M-Audio Delta and Behringer cards.
may extra time ka, swing ka! don't expect to see a high-end studio setup though..... but it gets the job done.

We chatted a few days ago. Just pm 'ed him by mistake in the irc. He told me that he plays drums in Ikhus and i asked him if he knew you. He told me that your group have been conducting guitar/bass/drum clinics in Ikthus with your main Ikthus band in Victorias City. He invited me to go there. This saturday will be your last session na pala. Sayang. He told me that if di daw ako pa papasukin ng guard hanapin ko lang daw c Jason. Say hi from me if mag kita kayo ni Jason. :-)
Yup! Mayo na cya mag drums pero he's forever in denial and uncomfortable being called "drummer". :-)
BTW, Last saturday sa Casino, was my first all analog set-up. I'm hooked! :-P

BTW just received my P90/ EVH from Charles yesterday.
What can i say? Tahuuuum!
I have an old MXR P90, and it thought pwede pa ma repair. Kaso, nabahaan na. So he suggested that we start from scratch, but he modded it with a toggle switch that changes from the MXRScriptbox p90 to EVH P90.
Yahoo! Compressor na lang, then tremulator, then booster - then..

Malupit talaga yang si Gabe! Almost three decades back, when everyone else was into clapton, page & beck, gabe was already into jazz/rock fusion, playing John Mc Laughlin/Larry Coryell & Al di Meola licks w/ his band Destiny. even before the term "shred guitar" was conceived, gabe was already doing this. I was blown away by their tune "A Taste of Honey" (sounds like a porn film :lol:), but the guitars was freekin' awesome!!!
During the early 80's i wuz teaching guitar part time at YSM. I remember gabe coming at the makati branch, got this les paul & was lookin' for the "heaviest" guitar player to jam with :lol: we became friends after that encounter ( needless to say, i was floored :-D :lol:)gabe's a monster! we became friends, & even classmates at the UP College of Music, (extension classes, UP Jazz Ensemble )... but we were the "Iskul Bukol" type, often skipping classes only to jam & smoke weed along w/ johnny A. :lol: at that time he was playing for Eddie Katindig Sr., I was jamming w/ Tateng ( Eddie K Jr) :lol:
Gabe was one of the very first clients of Mang Rudy... had a custom ES-335 made to his specs... He was the original axeman for Side A. He also jammed w/ the blue rats trading licks w/ joey puyat. then he moved to Bacolod. think he got into the tiger prawn culture business :-D Couple of years back he keeps on texting me, looking for a Tele. a friend of mine flew all the way to bacolod & brought him a 52 ri Tele. Gabe told me that it's more challenging to play Teles ( kinda like Ritchy Kotzen's trip ) one of my students was able to buy around 5 of gabe's high end Les Pauls & PRS... Lucky dude :-D
there were even urban legends that gabe jammed w/ the allman bros, & jeff beck ... but if you know gabe, he's such a humble guy. showed me some pat martino & mike stern licks while drinkin' San Mig Grande & feasting on Baliwag's liempo:-D :lol: :lol:
Gabe's fingers do the talking... truly a guitarist's guitarist 8-)

Mr. Gabe Ascalon is a great guitarist here. Master of Jazz Fusion. You should also see Ed Malata, master in Standard Jazz. I knew both of them through my father. :-D Mayo kay may thread na para sa mga taga Negros. hehehe

Mr Gabe and I got drunk last saturday at Moravia. he showed me his custumized strat with PAF's humbuckers on them
grabe! he was shredding out fusion licks and taught me some running-bassline chordings.

Mismo! He (Gabe) also called me that morning, i was looking for cheap glass for my doors and he played the new strat over the phone. Was that a new one?

yup Moravia has great acoustics for guitar.... the bar is just of the right size for a small club amp.

BTW, I just got my compressor from Charles Lo and used it during the weekend gig.
Honestly, it was the first time I experienced the so called "breathing" tone, where both clean and driven guitar had a more defined tone. It was an Ibanez Japan old school compressor, but since na baha-an, gin try namon i salvage.
Unfortunately, it was beyond repair so we made an MXR Dynacomp clone instead.
It The clean tones were more defined (esp. the out of phase strat sound ala Sultans of Swing) and the driven sound had more sustain and body.
I'll see if we can post a video of the Taberna gig :-)

Re: Bacolod scene- I can modestly say that we are privileged to gig weekly despite empty nights, and we're (our band, Nancy Brew) blessed to do so. We got to open for Johnny Alegre Trio last month, and hope for some good things coming next year.

Si Boy Adan yata nasa byahe pa rin pero naka relocate na sa tate. My father (An olongapo /US Bases - band alumnus) knows him. Robin Aristorenas - Gabe info'd me that he is a great player. Bob Aves - Haven't met the guy, but I occasionally bump on his drummer brother, Jess (who's also an amazing drummer). They play Fridays, we do Saturdays. Jess is with the Ed Malata Group, another Bacoleņo guitarist who plays with a mix of Herb Ellis' and Pass' style.
The rest may be Manila based guys which I do not have any info on. (Norman Ferrer, Caloy Rufo, Debbie Torres) I'm sure Gabe knows. Obviously, 1st guy that comes to mind when you mentioned Caloy is Jack.
I also have a list of guitar players I want to check. Sina Iloilo-based Mars (Marcelino) and Junior "bulag" Braza of Odds and Evens. I had an old cassette of them live, but a friend lost it. Another is Manny of the Frictions - who I know is based in Bahrain now.

As many of you already might know, JBee Borbajo (bassist of Gadfly, guitarist of Dezmigraena etc etc) passed away last week from a freak accident in Boracay. It made national news kay upod sila ni Dennis Trillio when it happened.
Anyway there's a tribute concert tomorrow (friday) at Tropics Bar, its beside M02 Ice and Starmart Mandalagan. It will feature 18 bands, many who are reuniting for this one-night affair. Tickets are at 70 pesos.

Ei! Isang linggo akong nawala- had to oversee the funeral of my father who passed away last September 18. He died of cardiac arrest due to partially collapsed lungs (50+ years of nicotine took its toll). I am working on his last performance on nylon string I took via phonecam. Im familiar with the band Jetlag. We played after their set at Moravia last month. Great band. Nice people too. Jett was really cool and accommodating when we were there. I see him around at Hayahay from time to time. I think he comes here with Charles once in a while.

i think you can get a really affordable tube amp by just buying one..cheapest now i know off is the Bugera V2($149), E-Wave DG5H(5000+ php), GuitarFuel Tube Amp($199), Blackstar HT5H($299 before now $399), or the peavey royale 8..
BTW, we are asked to speak in English or Tagalog from now on..other than those two language formats we are not suppose to speak a VERNACULAR

Yes we do smooth jazz and fusion. For Carlton we did two tracks from him, SLEEP WALK and ROOM 335 pa lang. We'll get better heheheehe..

Its a fairly common virus. Not that hard to remove as far as I know. I recommend any of these:
Antivirus: Avast AVG Avira
Anti-malware/spyware/adware Spybot - Search and Destroy Ad-Aware MalwareBytes
Scan all local drives. Make sure removable drives (Flash disks, Memory cards, etc.) are clean and virus free before plugging and using them. The Recycler virus is known to spread through removable drives.

My bandmate, whos good in soldering, makes mine. Custom lengths. Their not that hard to make if you know how to solder and have the wire, and plugs.

Most of the custom power supply makers of PhilMusic sell them as well at cheaper prices. PM them and ask.

Gabe Ascalon's band, Yatpu, & all of them bacolod dudes are really a musician's musician. Ang Lulupet ng mga yan :-D ( pyesa palang, Ulam na :lol:... RTF, Mahavishnu...)
btw, i saw Yatpu a couple of months back ( at the guitar adrenalin )... he played his Ibby Lee Rit model... his lines wuz like a sax solo w/ a bit of overdrive 8-) as always, everyone wuz in awe... ( Panis mga shreaders dun ) :lol: :lol: :lol:

You can try cascading the boss od with your G7. Use the G7 for modulations. Maybe you can add an equalizer or a delay. Hope this helps. :wink:

Thanks to those who recommended guitar stores in Bacolod. Just got back from there a few dyas ago. I liked JSV the best because they reminded me of JB and Audiophile due to the products/brands they sell. You guys there are kinda lucky. Most of the stuff there at JSV are actually cheaper by a couple of hundred bucks when compared to the same stuff here in Manila!

Try changing the Preferred DNS Server to 8.8.8.8 and the Alternate DNS Server to 8.8.4.4. I have tried this and it works. Hope this helps. :-)

Thank you sir. The project band is composed of me on guitars, Gerard "Spooky" Pontino (Ambient Sky) on synths and samples, Poli Gonzales on the other Synths, Luibie Guerzon (formerly of The Javaskaggs) on Drums, Harry (formerly of Kill Sophia) on Bass and Patricia Torre (formerly of Kill Sophia) on vocals.
Originally the band was conceptualized by Kid Guevarra and Jasper Borbajo since they wanted to come up with an all-Negrosanon band. We rehearsed with them already but due to their commitments with Tanya Markova they decided to put the project on hold for a while.
Thanks for checking out my stuff. I didnt post the others because I'm planning to come up with an EP too. Matt/Six/Felix (his aliases) and I are currently working on an EP which we both keep procrastinating. We managed to finish 1 track though. I also plan to submit a track for SSS that will hopefully make the cut.
Yes sir, ECE. I've been reading the previous posts and saw that Charles Lo has picked up where I left off. He's a really good guy, I didn't know teacher na sya sa USLS subong. I shared a few tips to him back in the day when he was starting out with pedal building. I was (probably) one of the first pedal builders here in the forum (together with Kalikot Audio, BamFX, PedalMax, KawayanStrat among others). After logging back in here, I've noticed there are already a lot who are into it now, and they have excellent builds. I'm not going back to the building business though. :-D

Sir Gabe is legendary and we all have reason to believe the myths of him jamming with the Allman Brothers and Jeff Beck are probably true. I was blessed to be under the wing of another legend, Nong Marlon Sipe, who I had lessons (Guitar and life) with. Most, if not all of my guitar knowledge are from him. I was also a witness to Jonali's speed. Negros is rich with talented guitarists. From the top of my head, Maki, Rjay Javier, Kim Evaristo, Kid Guevarra, Elcid Elumba are notable guitarists of our (my haha) generation. There are actually too many names to mention. I hope we can all get together some time. :-D

Yup, Negros is replete with great and soulful players, except that the only option is to go where the action is: Like Jasper and EJ. Marlon, Jonali and Gabe are great friends of mine too and we bump into each other when time allows.
You may want to add Jun Quilantang (Allan K.'s bro, now managing Klownz) too, who was taught by Marlon and Jonali. Same with "A" Torres (with drummer twin, "B") who is one monster player.
Spooky is George's bro, 'ayt? His track/s also made it in Killerbee's weekly top 20 and I'm a fan. Patricia used to jam back at now defunkt bar, DRAFT. Siling ni Tata, Talisay ka man kuno gali? ECE man siya kag taga Talisay man. I'm also an ECE grad but I never took the board exams.

Bale, born in Himamaylan, baby years in Binalbagan, toddler to kindergarten in Bacolod, elementary to college in Talisay, and now sa Bacolod naman liwat, although our house in Talisay is still there.
I played a gigs before sa Draft, when it was renamed Liquid, with my old band Willie and the Cameltoes with William Kramer on vocals, back in 2006. He now plays for these 2 bands (I will edit when i remember the name) one with Pio Seva and Daniel Decena, 2 great guitarists themselves, and the other band with Paul Montenegro. Last time I played a gig in Bacolod was during this year's Masskara at the Masqueriot in Breihz. I played with Six the North Star on turntables, Rjay Javier on guitars and Nat Castillo on drums, plus a laptop/sampler for Bass and we were all pretty wasted during that set. Haha
Lets have a get together/drinking session/jam during the holidays since most of us will be home. :-D

Besides the guitarists, we have a great share of excellent musicians. I grew up idolizing Paulo Lindaya (Wicked Tarsiers) on Bass, Kim Evaristo on guitars, whom I forgot to mention earlier, Drummers Karlo Evaristo, Sid Collantes, and Jun Jun Montelibano, the Borbajo Brothers and the rest of Gadfly and a hundred other names.
Of course our common problem is the limited venues to play in and the lack of domestic exposure. In my honest opinion our music should be accounted for and discovered because we have bands and musicians who can excel in the national scene.

Nong Marlon is a monster!!..I remember jamming with him with a "steve morse & vinnie moore" style way back in 2002 @ dennis' house at talisay..Dennis is a good player too,he's a seaman(i forgot his surname)..hehehe..It's true,Bacolod has a lot of guitar idols,Ace Cepeda,Epoy Banaag,Peter Vinco,Ralph Mendoza & the late Eddie Vargas are demons!!..You also Sir Beth!..These guys opened my eyes to guitar...If you happen to visit Perfect Pitch there's a guy named Miro Mediodia,he's one hell of a guitarist!..
Peter Vinco and I talked a lot last time,they are planning to organize a Guitar Event maybe this March 2011..I will be coming home,if I can't perform,I'll just watch those amazing Negroes' performance.. :-D..And one more thing,Jonali is not just a speedy monster,he's also a great luthier..My first "serious" guitar was made by him,a jem copy neck(with very detailed vine inlays) and i had a guitar,a Star brand,maybe sta mesa made,there he connected the neck he made for me,he also routed the body in order to accommodate the floyd..very nice workmanship and a very nice teacher too.I remember 2 or 3 guitar sessions/lessons from him which i really treasured.. :-D..
Let's all pray that the event will materialize and let us celebrate & share the talent the Mighty Lord gave us..

Hopefully that will push through sir. December or March will be great. I hope it happens on December, because I'm not sure if I'll be home March. If it materializes, I'll be on the sidelines taking photos and videos, drinking away and appreciating the greatness.

Heres my last setup during the Masqueriot gig during my vacation last Masskara. This was my first time playing again in Bacolod after almost 2 years.

Of course them! Last time I saw them play together was at a gig in KGB, Christmas break 2008. I havent seen Kim in a long time, last time I was with him, we played poker with his brothers Karlo and Kokoy early 2009. He should be addressed as Doctor Evaristo nowadays. Hehe!

Wow. I've just read the updates and its great to know that by word of mouth alone, everybody knows everyone. Its a good start. I've read that the Hives know rock history from A-Z even if they're from Sweden.
Speaking of the Masqueriot gig, any details on RJay's new guitar? Was it a hollowbody?
I do not have any idea on the recent plans of a guitarfest, and have not hooked up with Nonoy Peter for a while. But that would be a good one.
The lack of venues in Negros may be viewed as an opportunity for us though - almost everyone can get recorded nowadays. We can create a sub label under the instrumental category and get stuff going around online with the help of Bong Tan's SSS records.
Jonali was definitely a major influence in my playing. He was in the same band with my sister in the early 90s.

Rjay's guitar is an Ibanez hollow body. I forgot the exact model. It just oozes jazz.
BTW, do you have Nong Marlon's number? Also, when's the deadline for the SSS compilation? Ive been working with a couple of songs that I might submit but I only get to work on them once in a while so the progress is quite slow. :-D

RE: SATIN RHYTHMS Sonny Boy Quilisadio on guitars is one great player too. He was with the original AIRE band, (circa 80s - 90s yata with Gerry Grey, the late Monrique Lizares, and Jojo Bonnin on drums, if I'm not mistaken).
Bimbo Demerin is a trumpet player too, we've been together in marching bands way back.

Bacoguena sounds nice ha ha ha! 'Yung jazz, as far as I can remember has been staple in the ears of the Negrense. For one reason, a lot of great musicians have come from the local scene. m
Bobby Enriquez, the Saysons, Gabe Ascalon, Nonoy Jalandoni, Dwight Gaston, and a whole lot more great and humble musicians to name a few ay galing Negros.
As for the food hehehehee, I have to say the same with Batangas cooking. Sarap din!

(we use to open for highlander around '94 at the bay center when they were managed by a certain jess lacson from 27th st mandalagan...and i was always floored whenever marlon hit it with buklod with his tele :-o ,late 80's) i'm a big fan of this two, and have no idea what happened to them since i left for manila 1996, active pa sila gyapon sir?

@ sir nancy- sa tanker ako sumasakay sir, bilis ng byahe kasi europe trade kaya hirap ako maka lesson ng gitara. tapos yun mga tao dito kalimitan puro internet na lang ginagawa kaya yun lesson na lang din thru internet pa rin ako you tube. iba talaga pag may nagtuturo sayo. gaganda sana ng mga gamit dito sir kaya lang hirap lang kasi iuwi jan sa atin.

@Sir Alan: Mayo gid may internet kamo. I Met with a high school batchmate who is under a Japanese co. , and sila wala gid internet hours onboard. Subu subo kuno hehehe. I agree, some dismantle guitars to fit in boxes para mapadala. Marlon Sipe still plays session sa FRC (that's Folk-Rock-Country, for the younger generation) outfit with Oca Moises sa Metrodome (Singcang, in front of Bongbong's), Jonali is still with the Speed Limit Band and still plays the guitar he custom made for himself.

hindi ko talaga alam sir kung magkano yun payment sa customs, kasi pagdala namin yun item wala kami bayad sa tax. free tax yun mga OFW. like nun bumili ako dito ng amp (micro cube lang maliit) at yung keyboard na binili ko rin dito ako mismo nagdala kaya walang payment sa custom.
Sa mga japanese ships talaga sir kalimitan walang internet pero yun mga european ship especially sa swedish eh may internet talaga.

Am currently in Bacolod for the holidays. While I am here almost every year, I haven't done any guitar-related adventures since the last time I asked in this thread. Anyways, can anyone list down the guitar stores in the city again? I am aware of the recently opened Crescendo but I can't seem to remember where that store perpendicular to Lacson and Araneta is. Any other places I could visit?
