When was the last time you bought a brand new guitar? Ako last year, 2008. When i bought an Edwards E-LP-98VHB. Awesome LP copy. Very sulit. Pero...
Am I the only one who doesn't feel takes a lot longer to "get into" a brand new guitar compared to a well worn, broken-in one? This past year I discovered that it doesn't matter how well a guitar is made, if its brand new, it will always be dead. I mean, yes, I have always said that guitars are just tools of wood and wire but I've gone through a lot of guitars (borrowed or owned), and when I say I went through one I mean I had it in my posession for over 2 weeks, more than enough time for the honeymoon to kick in and out and enough time for me to adjust to it.
Case in point, my old 52ri tele (its in the classifieds, but trust me, its not worth as much as the guy is asking for it.). Its an awesome guitar. Now. And I do miss it. Pero when I first got it (it was a year old then), and after I threw in all those mods, it stayed at home for almost 2 months being played daily before I started gigging with it. The am. std. tele I got, on the other hand (the one mikerock bought), was 6 or 7 years old when I got it, had a few worn out frets and a stiff pickup selector switch but I started gigging with it the same week I bought it. It felt better, more alive, was more "magical" and had character than the '52ri.
I've tried a couple of so-called "high end" guitars over the years (a few Suhrs, Anderson, PRS, Gibson, Fender CS) and its always the same. If its less than a year old, its sterile, cold and dead.
Maybe dem guitars are alive. Just born asleep. Tapos you need to throw 'em in the dirt and bash 'em around a bit to wake them up.

ako naman.. i rarely buy guitars.. that's why i only have one electric, and so does my brother.. :-)
both were bought brand new..
i don't have anything with second hand guitars.. pero hanggat kaya ko makakuha ng brand new, i'll get one.. mas gusto ko na ako magdidiscover sa kung anong meron sa guitar.. just my personal taste..
although i won't mind buying a used guitar na gustong-gusto ko talaga.. i've seen many.. just didn't have the breads.. :-)
-
i feel the same way, man...i like the worn in feel of my guitars so i tend to pick instrument purchases very carefully because I hate having to go through the task of breaking stuff in all over again.
-
same with me,mas masarap himasin ang lumang neck. :-D.
-
The only guitar i've ever bought brand new was my first ever: a suzuki classical from JB.
So I wouldn't know.
-
share ko lang. i love my 20 something yr old MIJ strat, though i also love my 08 tele. preference lang talaga IMO.
but i have to say, para sakin mas may "mojo" ang old worn guitars. :-)
-
Isn't it like, the older the guitar is; the better? That's what I hear.
-
For the longest period of my guitar playing life, I've been convinced not to buy used ones. Pero nung nakuha ko yung 80s yamaha classical guitar ng tito ko which he used when he still lived in the Philippines, nag iba tingin ko sa mga used guitars, lalo na yung luma. There's that certain unexplainable mojo in these guitars. Even when i try yung mga gitara ng kaibigan ko, they still play and feel better kesa brand new guitars. Just a simple sharing. Now......i want to buy a used MIJ strat... hahaha.....
-
For me i still prefer to buy a brand new, i mean i want it to grow old with me, kasi for me i will love playing it pag merong sentimental value. If there is a problem with the sound, then a luthier can fix it. Just like in my case i have a japan made strat na binigay sa akin ng bandmate ko and a Squier 51, which i am the one who bought. Comparatively mas ok yung tone nung strat, but yung feeling na ikaw talaga yung unang may ari nung gitara na binili mo, parang sarap ng pakiramdam gamitin. :-) And if after twenty years at nasayo pa din yung gitara na ikaw yung original bumili, then it's really an accomplishment na you had a guitar that grow old with you and you are never tired of playing it. :-)
-
an old, wise guitar maestro once told me: the older the wood, the denser it gets, sound resonates better. This belief has taught me well in picking up guitars. i would prefer a vintage, mint condition Les Paul over brand new ones (that's where serial #s are most helpful). That... is my honest thought guys!
-
Used guitars are the way to go for me. I love that they always have a story to tell. Something tells me that its not about using old growth wood either, its probably about that plank of wood maturing as an instrument with all those vibrations, sweat, and smoke.. who knows?

I love how they're cheaper.
-
I love how they're cheaper.
that too.
-
I love how they're cheaper.
Aged wood + Mojo + Cheaper price = WIN!
-
I love how they're cheaper.
Not always. :-D
I think what I like about used guitars is that it's somehow liberating. You don't have to be extra careful with the guitar. Used guitars has something that makes it valuable but brand new guitars also has something to hold its own. I like used guitar but new guitars ain't that bad to have.

Mismo! Although for me if I have the dough, I'd still prefer to buy a brand new guitar. Iba din kasi yung feeling ng brand new guitar and unti-unting naluluma sa mga kamay mo.

Maybe it's the "security blanket" effect, the same reason we wear shoes with soles with holes from walking a million miles in them, or go to sleep in old t-shirts soft enough to clean the car with, or wear old cotton briefs with elastic that have since disintegrated. Chances are our mothers/girlfriends/wives have tried throwing them away and even replaced them with new ones, but we move heaven and earth to retrieve them from the dumpster. Even if the instrument "seasoned" under somebody else's watch, it somehow feels or sounds better in our hands because the sharp edges (in more ways than one) have since become smooth and become "acceptable" or "at home" to our senses, whether it be the sense of feel or hearing. Others call it "Mojo". Baka "hiyang" lang iyan *cringes when the old Kris Aquino TV commercial comes to mind*.
While typing this, i thought of something: maybe it's a "guy" thing (and Ladies, I don't mean this in a sexist way)! If grunge was the latest fad, men would wear worn out shoes, jeans with holes, play battered guitars, etc. because we felt "at home" with them. Of course, we told the world that doing so was our way of being "anti-establishment", but it really boils down to just being "at home" with them (amineeen!!!!). Just looking at photos of musicians on the web, I noticed that if you find a pic of an old, worn-out, even battered guitar/bass, chances are it's slung on the neck of a guy. I'm not saying you won't find women musicians who use relics, but from what I've seen you'll find more old and seasoned guitars in the hands of guys than galls. Am I making sense?
-
i agree w/TS...
the first and last time i had a bnew guitar was ages ago(a squier MIK strat when my father bought me my 1st elec guitar)...after that, i settled w/good old 2nd hand guitars...it feels better IMHO, its also good that each instrument that i had have its story to tell...plus its way cheaper than bnew ones...
now,im keeping 3 20+ year old guitars...as it feels better, sounds better than bnew ones that ive tested in our local music stores. relic'd guitar have its x-factor for me than bnew ones, probably its their "mojo" being played by numerous musicians that held it through the years, hoping that their skills will be instilled in the instrument and make me a better player...
8-) 8-) 8-)
-
Maybe we should all hang on to our brand new guitars a bit longer to see if they settle into our ears. Or not. My 9-year old Strat wouldn't be that old if i let it go the first few months i bought it. :P
-
for me ok lang 2nd hand guitar dipende sa klase i go for vintage type of guitar more solid yellowish na yung neck and much solid..... but there are some brand new unit but cultured yun ayos.....
well ok tlga b.new pero kung vintage minsan mas mahal pa sa price ng bago because of the wood i guess!!!!....
-
Of course, father time and mother nature does their number on the guitar transforming it into one organic whole with its own distinct voice instead of just a bunch of wood and metal thrown together. It's hard to predict how it eventually turns out or sounds but it's not magic either.
An even better example are acoustic guitars. All that glue and wood (especially the neck and body) fusing together produces a single resonating box, instead of several pieces of wood fighting for their own voice and being stunted by fresh glue.
-
-
maybe it psychological.
old guitars = reliable, tested, gone to many gigs / experienced, sound is molded in time because of mods, sentimental value.etc
new guitar = fresh, to be tested and modded, have to gain experience and build your relationship with your new guitar (unlike the old one gamay nyo na) etc.
for me i like brand new para may personal touch talaga from the start
cheers!
-
i like new guitars that are shiny.. ako na ang magpapaluma sa kanila, at least i know kung panong alaga ang meron sila habang naluluma sa pag gamit.. gusto ko rin kung may chips o bangas man, ako ang makakagawa, para alam ko ang kwento behind that..
-
I totally agree with the TS, I've bought a couple of brand new guitars back then(Tele's, RG's...) and the feel is completely different compared to the older and used guitars. The older guitars grows in me easier compared to the brand new guitars.
-
I don't like the feel of new guitars too. It's nice when the fret board has been broken in.
-
Last time I bought a brand new (electric) guitar? 1995. Since then, I've bought 4 2nd-hand axes, sold 2 of the 4, and restored my first electric guitar (local, custom-made in 1992). I haven't really handled a new guitar in-store since the golden days of the Yupangco forum (2004-2007). But, the old stuff (like the NOS stuff at the Buendia showroom basement) *somehow* feels nicer.
-
once you developed that preference on how the guitar should feel in your hands..its rare to find a guitar that is either used or brand-new that would feel the same way of the shelf or from some sellers hand..
only thing im after is if it feels good and sounds good in my hands..doesnt matter if its old or new..
-
Do you like Mondays?
-
Do you like Mondays?
when there's cold coke on my desk yup
-
I used to think relic guitars suck...but once I got to play some Grosh, K Lines, MJtelecaster, and a Nocaster CS... I'm a firm believer that it does feel so used and easy to play.
-
for me, i like brand new guitars. it's psychological for me - since im new in playing, i feel that i will grow with it, learn with it, and improve with it. and gusto ko sa akin siya malalaspag, unlike having a secondhand which i don't know how the former user handled it. ;D as of now kasi, i wouldn't know how to choose older guitars since wala pa akong alam masyado sa nuances and all, but in time i think i'll learn to appreciate older guitars too :)
-
hmm..
just bought my brand new guitar last november..
my SBMM:JP50
to me it really doesnt matter whether if Im getting a used one or a brand new one.
if it plays good.
feels great on me.
then I give it a go.
-
me too..i like old stuff's es.guitars,.its like having all the spirits of past owner that left their axes behind..and imagine how many people that old junk like guitar have make them happy or even cried to when we play. :-)
-
get the best of both worlds
my 2 guitars, an old greco mij start an a bnew squire strat
one already worn out being handled w/ care
and the other being worn out :P

*ehem*check my sig*ehem* (sorry, couldn't help it  )
-
i like brand new guitars dahil parang sa kotse may "new car smell" sa gitara may parang feel na masarap plus iba ung dating nung kumikinang kinang pa ung paint xP
on old guitars may nagsabi sakin na ung wood ay parang wine mas matagal mas sumasarap o gumaganda.
pero for me i'd go with 2nd hand guitars swak lang sa budget plus iba ung gamit na .
-
I've been buying guitars brand new, there's one I didn't like so I got rid of it. Last one I bought is the one I still have and play, Dean 79 V bought more than 2 years ago. True, that it sounds better after some time. Jon also mentioned na may break-in period nga. Pag bago, it sounded trebly and thinner as it was the case with my V. So for me, kung kaya ko presyo ng bago then I'd buy it. I like it to grow old with me.
-
I share the same sentiments. mojo is key. :)
-
+1 on the used guitar.
OT: http://cgi.ebay.com/Stratocaster-ORANGE-AMPLIFIER-KILLER-RIG-FENDER-CASE_W0QQitemZ330387669197QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item4ceca3c0cd
LOL on this and do check out the guy's other items.
Good day to everyone!
-
this thread caught my eye. I just have to agree with used guitar. I've been through 30 guitars (bought and sold), and the only brand new guitar i bought was my third guitar which was a Washburn dimeslime (korean made), back in 1998 or 1999. I thought it was the [gooey brown stuff].
Sometimes, i don't even care if the guitar has big paint chips, dents or scratches, as long as i can play it comfortably and gives the sound that i want, i won't care. Lessens my worries when i bring gear to gigs, and usually are priced really low.
-
2nd hand wid good condition. ok na! and ok di dapat ang presyo
-
-

amen.

yung high school cutie. fresh, nubile, walang experience. :D
pero sa guitars di ako mapili. :)
-
Also explains why middle-aged men shy away from the very young. Understandable naman. But for those who are still youthful, ok lang pareho. :-D
-
its nice to corrupt the innocent once in a while..
but i also agree with the 'seasoned' approach.
i have 5 guitars. 2 used and 3 new when i purchased them. only is still in 'mint'. the others are in various stages of 'relic-fication'. (the natural way of course)

I like old guitars but only if I was the one who battered and beaten it up over the years. Don't want to go through the process of checking a second hand guitar for hidden defects - intentional or not.

used guitar = milf :D
-
ako medyo psychological din in a way. gusto ko used guitar, kasi malakas loob kong kawawain. di naman sirain ah. pero mas walang makakapigil sa playing ko. walang hindrance. walang thought na baka "magasgasan to" kaya dahan dahan lang. walang ganun pag used. music pa rin kasi ako over gear eh. para sakin lang naman yun. walang basagan ng trip. :)
-
@ts that's your call man. i like brand new guitars and i tend to stay with them till they got old. it's fun to discover its sweet spot(just my 2 cents). it's like you two are embarking on a journey to greatness.naks. :)
-
Yung sa mga ayaw ng brand new, pwede din namang bumili ng b-new tapos pahiram nila sa akin ng mga 5-10 years tapos ibalik ko sa kanila after...o di solved, di ba hehehe :-D
-

I have yet to experience a brand new guitar... Philmusic classifieds guitar section has been so good to me for the past 4 years :)
but yeah, given the choice I would rather get a new one and "vintage" it myself, but buying used is just so practical and money-smart...
-
This is so true, the best sounding guitars I have are those that has more than 10 yrs. The best old guitar I have is a 1970s beat up Shinano classical guitar that I bought for 3k at makati cinema square. Ang lakas ng tunog nya compared to my other acoustics, and people who play it is amazed at how good it sounds.
According to mang Jun, old guitars have an advantage because most of the moisture from the wood is gone so it resonates better. Well, I can attest to that. My old electric guitars (12-15 yrs old) sound louder acoustically than the new electrics I have.
-
well if all people don't like brand new guitars, there wouldn't be any used guitar now haha. :-D :-D :-D
anyway, i like the oldness of used guitars and the kinis feel of the new guitars. so i guess it doesnt matter much to me.
-
ToneRite, PrimeVibe
for electrics i tape an old electric toothbrush around the neck of the guitar, let it on when till the battery dies..
-
nice thread!

That's a fact bro. An aged wood is like an aged wine. It will taste sweeter and smoother. Guitars do too :-)
-
IMO, Guitars are like Girls :)
What do you want an OLD one or a NEW/YOUNG one? :-D
I Prefer a NEW one, and together you'll make your own HISTORY.
Old guitars has their own STORY/HISTORY, its not yours to tell.....
I will only Chose the OLD Guitars if it was USED personally by Guitar Legends such us...
Hendrix,Page,Clapton,SRV,Vai,Satch,Mustaine,Hetfield,Hammett,Friedman,Becker,Johnson,Dimebag,Van Halen,Gilbert,Kotzen,Beck,Hoey,Lynch,Timmons,Wylde,Petrucci...... to name a few... 8-)
-
i like brand new guitars that look old. NOT reliced but looks old. VOS gunk.
natural weather checking looks good IMO

Interesting. Diba sila Suhr are coming out with bodies na baked to basically do this artificially? I've seen one with it posted on another forum.
That said, I got my main guitar NOS about 8 years ago. It's going to turn 20 in two years. :) Pero for me, there are too many factors when it comes to different guitars. There are old duds and there are great new guitars. So just go with what sounds good, regardless of age.
-
yeah, I think woods used on high-end guitars are not freshly cut, they might have spent some years in the factory to age. I think I read that somewhere. Tapos I saw sa american deluxe strat ko that the body has a different year marking vs. the neck. So I was curious why that is. Maybe they let these parts sit around until they pass the "age" test para maganda yung tunog pag binenta na.
-
I like my Gil Yaron... its brand new but feels worn in. Also, the wood on the guitar has only been together around 3 months and I guarantee you that it will beat a 90% of vintage guitars out there in terms of sound.

your right SIR!
that's why guitars that are made in USA or JAPAN are so pricey...
their woods was AGED in years before they were cut as your guitars(body/neck)... I saw how it was made in DISCOVERY Channel years ago, it was a CHARVEL/JACKSON guitars. It was then when i realized why some guitars are so expensive...
-
I like brand new guitars.

BTT:
I don't care whether my electric guitar is brand new or not. There's just too many factors that contribute to the final tone aside from the age of the wood.
-
-
Para sakin ok lang pareho luma man o bago basta maayos pang gamitin at tumunog
-
It doesn't matter. I like them both.
-
I dont like brand new guitars because:
1. they are pricier that 2nd hand guitars
2. masakit magasgasan lalo yung unang unang tama...
-

Same here, it doesn't really matter to me.
Para sakin, as long as andun yung 'tunog' and 'playability' na hinahanap ko - I would take it home, be it a brand new guitar or an old beat up one. =)
-

eh yung vintage? haha
-
brand new is always my first option. if i'm going for used gear, i would want it slightly used. i don't mind having dings on my gear as long as i was the one who put them there, not some other guy.
-
eh yung vintage? haha
hahahaha oo nga! kaso out of my league na yun! hahaha
-
Expect a trip to a luthier or a lot of DIY setting up when buying 2nd hand guitars.
-
honestly, even though i have some 2nd hand guitars, i like brand new guitars.. unless it's a 59 burst.
-
i like brand new guitars but those i like are to be shipped from online sites. thank god we have philmusic and shippers.
-

new guitars need to be setup'd as well..

this.

The only time I ever bought a new guitar was when I had my LsL T-Bone made, since I have no intention in selling it. Otherwise, I buy used. Not because I dislike new guitars. Rather, I do not like selling at a loss. The devaluation in the used gear market is horrendous. With used gear I always sell at a gain, or at least break even.
-
the last brandnew guitar i bought was a sta mesa SG copy way back 2005 haha. after nun lahat na ng guitars ko 2ndhand.
i currently love aged and relicd guitars :)
-
-
I've never had a bnew guitar. hahahaha and all of 'em sound nicer than a new one. Not actually sure if that's the case for all.
-

Our young, and "wise">:) bassist told me once na "the only problem with buying a brand new guitar is you can not sell it over the price you got it, unlike buying used ones." haha just sharing. Peace you guys!
-
Let's not forget na those used and vintage guitars are once brand new.
-
With Philmusic, I don't like brand new anymore hehe
Kidding aside, the only time I bought brand new was when i was in High school, another in college, and another when I was gunning for an MIA strat that wasn't available locally. All the rest I got 2nd hand and I don't mind it at all. Though like some of the guys, I prefer to be the one to put the dings on em and I want it nice and clean :) Unless of course I was going for some of the relic jobs some of the guys are selling.
It seems it's just not worth it these days going for brand new if you can find a like new version of it in PM

Akala ko bagong topic! Tapos nakita ko pa may post ako dati ahaha.
-
on the topic of old guitars sounding better than new ones, i sort of agree.
Matthias Jabs talked about this once in a guitar mag: he had a new guitar which he felt needed "waking up," so he had his techs keep it onstage at every show, on a stand, pretty much beside his speaker cabs, and this exposed the guitar to musical vibrations similar to actually being played. I'm not sure how effective it actually is, but it's kind of plausible.
-
ako naman.. i rarely buy guitars.. that's why i only have one electric, and so does my brother.. :-)
both were bought brand new..
i don't have anything with second hand guitars.. pero hanggat kaya ko makakuha ng brand new, i'll get one.. mas gusto ko na ako magdidiscover sa kung anong meron sa guitar.. just my personal taste..
although i won't mind buying a used guitar na gustong-gusto ko talaga.. i've seen many.. just didn't have the breads.. :-)
experience has thought you better, im guessing. :D
-
The only guitar I bought brand new is the guitar I'm selling today. All my second hands will stay.
-
The only guitar I bought brand new is the guitar I'm selling today. All my second hands will stay.
Talaga lang ha... <_<
-
opposite naman sa akin. all my guitars were brand new. hindi pa ako nakabili ng second hand but I wouldn't mind buying one as long as it's still in pretty great condition. I like opening a box and seeing a shiny new guitar. :-D
-
-
Talaga lang ha... <_<
Well... tingnan naten..
Tarush.

Well... tingnan naten..

AMMK! :)
-
Pero sa topic na.. "I don't like brand new guitars"
YES. Mas gusto ko yung nagamit na, atleast 10 years old, signs of playing wear and patina. Meron syang character na wala ang brand new guitar. Meron na syang personality.
Psy mode. Hehehe. Pero totoo.

pwede! :-D

My first electric guitar was a Strat SLAMMER by Hamer which is a gift from my dad wayback year 2002... It was my first and last bnew boucht guitar cause bnew custom is a different deal :-D
I like gibson usa from the 90's specially sg's and lp's
I also like fender usa/japan from the 90's
Comfy on my left hand hahaha...
Pero dahil natuto na ko hinding hindi na ko bibili pa ng bnew na guitar for my personal use unless pang regalo syempre hehehe... Pero mukhang for disposal na yung remaining guitars ko except for 2 customs na lang matitira saken hehehehe :-D
-
i want to do the relic'ing myself, i don't want to get a relic'ed guitar done by someone unless he's famous ^-^
-
Hmmm let me see..this one is from another thread..
Before Philmusic 1990s
Genesis Series (Gandy Dancer) (decommissioned)
-2nd hand, bought by my dad and grandma from my uncle who buys and sells gear..
Fender Squire Korea (Red) (decommissioned+still sounds sweet and boomy)
-brand new (but blemished--pinamigay lang ng Yupanco as prize-but the blemish looks cool now..parang nag age..)
Dads 70's Japanese Yamaha Nylon (Broken-bridge ripped out of the top)
-No idea about the history..but I think he bought this 2nd hand as well..then used by me..
Craftsman Folk (Badly beaten up, screwed on split neck-but still used)
-New from JB
Fernando Bass (Downfall) (Still used)
-New from JB
Period of Renewal:
Squire '51 (Chairman) (decommissioned)
-New from shop (floor model, with slight blems)
Gibson Lespaul Special Faded (K)
(given by a frend who went back to US)
Aosen Acosutic (Mel)
(given by a friend who went back to US)
After Philmusic 2011
Fender Strat Am. Std. (Juanie)
-New from a Philmusic seller, fresh with stickers and tags and pickguard flim..
Jaguar Special HH fitted with a bigsby (Adam)
-2nd hand very fresh lahat but has minor blems ..which nadagdagan ko after 1 day..
*Ive had some other crappy, brandless, cheapo disposable acoustic and electric guitars in between (one I just picked up along the street), but just gave them away and left them or abandoned them somewhere down the road..
-
I used to think that old guitars are generally better guitars than their newer counterparts.
Now, it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day, it still boils down to these important traits... good acoustic tonewoods, good craftsmanship, reliability, versatility and inspiration factor.

this!! though honestly i lean more into used guitars in general mainly because often it's easier to find these qualities on 2nd hand guitars,
-better wood=aged na kasi
-good craftsmanship= already set up by a luthier
-playability= upgrades
-reliability= well 50/50 on this pala same lang sa bnew iterms of risk siguro basta marunong ka tumingin siguro maiiwasan mo sablay
BUT i feel like it's not really right to limit yourself self when looking for a guitar, hasty generalization wont get you anywhere i'm sure there are gems also sa brandnew, with everything naman it boils down to luck :)
for example during my just recent search for a main guitar i searched high and low, sandamakmak na atang stores napuntahan ko, and kung saan saan na ako na padpad in testing 2nd hand guitars naman!! i found good and bad ones in both , like this bnew ltd elc that i tested in lyric cubao, i know dont if it's the good folks on the shop (unlike yupangco, sungit haha) but the guitar really sounded great to me and it fit me like a glove compared to most 2nd hands i already tested pero ayaw ko man i limit sarili ko but 50k is way off my budget  well i guess in general its another advantage of 2nd hands mas mura!
what im trying to say is dont let yourself be boxed into either, if your looking for a guitar and you have time why not try both old and new; give yourself a chance you might be pleasantly surprised :D
-
Broken in guitar. Patina on the hardware. Nicks and dings. Love it. :)
-
Mas mahirap nga lang maghanap ng good sounding guitar na used.
-
hmmm.. maganda din yung mga used guitars, my first fender tele was a used one. Relic pa nga.. My first day with that tele was really magical. Ibang iba ung tuwa ko. First fender, plus ung relic looks and upgraded parts..
Then I tried a brand new acoustic guitar, with binding on the body and neck with pearl block inlays.. So may iba ring dating ung brand new and you get the chance na ikaw ung mag mark ng history sa kanya with dings and so.
I bought my next tele. It was like a NOS. A telecaster plus which look and feels like brand new.. so meron siya character ng used and brandnewness haha :-D
-
-
Me personaly i dont like brand new guitars, i much prefer the dings, rust, paintchips ng aged guitars kesa sa bago, and i hear something na wala sa mga new guitars, ndi ko ma-explain kong anu un, is that MOJO? :-o
-
I'm thinking about buying a Used Guitar, with some dings and scratches and etc, rather than buying it's Brand New Counterpart.. the price of the used guitar is gradually lower, almost half the price of it's brand new counterpart, and sa ngayon kasi, gipit talaga ako, ang tagal mabenta nung gitara k na naka post sa classifieds hahaha, at sobrang inaatake nako ng GAS hahaha.. should i go with the used guitar?? what do you think mga sir? haha
-
I have a fetish of unboxing new guitars.

Check the body for cracks okay lang ang scratches. Check the neck baka twisted. Check the hardware coz magastos palitan. Dalhin mo sa luthier for a setup pagkabili. Ang maganda sa used guitar pag nagsawa ka you can sell at the same price. You have to lower your price if you sell a brand new guitar.

relic guitars r good when it comes to fender guitar bagay n bagay s fender mapa-tele or strat... 8-)

Eventhough i think even a pretty beat up burned LP will look cool and will still have it's own character :D

I'm not a fan of relic'd guitars but I do agree na bagay siya sa strats and teles but not on LPs IMO.
-
I like my Gil Yaron... its brand new but feels worn in. Also, the wood on the guitar has only been together around 3 months and I guarantee you that it will beat a 90% of vintage guitars out there in terms of sound.

Up naten to para happy :-D

It's not that I don't like brand new guitars. It's the fact that I buy a new one, somehow gets a ding, spend 3 days being pissed about it then spend the next 2 weeks wasting my time online researching how I can fix the ding to get it back to its "new" condition only to make it look worse.

duuuuuuuude!! totally same man!!!! mines even longer! hahahaha freaking internet research?!?!?!? arghhh!! haha in the end it wont really matter...looks good actually...give it a year or so...
BTT..
for me i dont like new guitars because...
its expensive...parang kotse pag labas mo ng Music shop with your new guitar..slashed by several percent na ang guitar mo.....and you can easily find amazing deals (price point + condition) from the 2nd hand market...and I dont buy in stores as well..just through my little network...unless serious guitar GAS hits...buying in stores is the last resort.. well andyway, I sort of came down with a resolution that no more guitars for me...Ill stick to my LP and beat the sH*t out of it from now till kingdom come...
sold all my guitars..though I want to get a P-90 double cut TV yellow LP Junior...but its hard to find...
Id love a true blue honest to goodness tele, ES, and a jazzmaster too..but..f^ck it..unless i find a good deal second hand...no guitar buying muna...

I just want an electric guitar! PERIOD
-
basta it matters than local, call ako.
-
my first time to get a shiny guitar, love how it sound but hate the shiny parts :-(
gagastos pa to make it look old or maybe just leave it, not clean it, and gig it!!!
-
^ not a "cleaner" here...haha I dont even have those oils and cleaning solutions... just use whatever household cleaners I have around the house.. haaay..bakit di nalang kasi gawing nickel parts ang standard kesa sa ughh "chrome"
-
my last brand new guitar that I bought was my very first American standard Strat from a seller here in Philmusic It was totally new with the stickers and all the case candy (sadly walang skb case)..baptism of fire to purchase a guitar with some value... in less than a week..found a huge sharp dent with no idea how the f*ck happened.. this popped the cherry for me..
-
I don't have anything against new guitars, and I haven't purchased a used one either, but I do find myself more comfortable getting a used but well-maintained one.
It already has a certain character, the battle scars, the worn spots, the upgrades and modifications, they all reflect the relationship between the previous owner and the guitar.

one thing I learned the whole time Ive been acquiring stuff...
The best items are those "players"...used by real gigging musicians..regardless of the condition...these items are played, set up, adjusted, modded, specifically chosen by these musikeros to really perform above expectations..
those other guitars being disposed by collectors usually still need to be broken in adjusted and tweaked to perform well... this is a general rule.. of course you can be lucky..

I agree with this. pag yung gitara mint pero collector's item, halos parang brand new lang eh, na-time machine nga lang.

players #1 guitars are usually the ones with Hiyaw...
-
well, kelangan meron din atang "taga-worn" ng guitars.

I read this advise before: vintage guitars that are in mint condition were probably kept in storage coz the owner does not like the tone. Vintage guitars with great tone are usually worn coz they are used to gig.
-
I love well worn-out guitars providing everything still intact and working (no cracks and truss rod still functional). Nagkaroon lang kasi ako ng Bad Experience kasi yung first electric guitar kong binili mar problema yung truss rod. Nabola ako nung seller, sabi sakin ginagamit nya daw pang slide guitar kaya mataas yung action. Anyway, lesson learned.
-
Much as i want to get a used guitar, di ko talaga kayang mag shell out ng cash for it, usually kelangan kong bayaran ng hulugan yun, so no choice for me but to just get a brand new instrument. Pwede ko pang bayaran ng installment.
-
I buy used if my intention is to flip it later. Worst case scenario is to break even, or sometime lose a couple of bucks. But most of the time I make a small profit. New if I intend to keep it.

This is a good approach if youre in search for “the one” guitar...tone quest...plus have tons of fun trying out different guitars..brands, makes and models...get to a/b them to see which is better....keep the keepers sell the others...its a fun hobby...“try and sell”….and you dont lose much money in the process...as compared to always buying new paying the premium for being the first user then loosing 30% once you step out of the store..

Ganda! I have a faded red of a 2006 model pero ang ganda talaga ng TV Yellow!
-
I don't mind buying 2nd hand guitars especially the expensive ones (reaching the 150k + mark bnew) and will be sold half the price. But for the mid priced guitar wherein I can afford to buy bnew....then I'll buy it bnew.
-
Di pa ako nakakabili ng brandnew, puro second hand.
Reason:
1. Can't Afford
2. Clumsy ako, baka magka dents kagad.

Since I started being able to afford to buy my own gear, I have never ever bought one guitar that was brand new. Maybe in brand new condition, but never from a store.
-
damn 37 guitars, I think only one is new ..
-

sugal kasi Bnew eh. baka lemon makuha. I prefer hearing the guitar a couple of times before purchasing. 9i.e. gig, bahay test)
-
I also prefer pre-owned guitars over brand new ones lalo na gloss finish. I am too careful to ding or scratch it - which I hate because I am a gigging musician. Too bad I'm currently gassing for a ML3, which I rarely see in classifieds.
-
i once bought a brand new guitar sa jb. Hamer SATF. goddamn heavy guitar! feels like carrying a ton of douchebag tone. ended up trading it for a nicely beat up tokai tele which i really really love.
-
-
its more exciting for me to get used guitars unang una dahil sa great prices..compared na buying new.. na paglabas mo lang ng store..depreciated na yung instrument parang kotse..

i share their thoughts...not a bnew guitar for me as well
