Title: Technology News
Post by: electronictokwa on April 14, 2011, 06:19:15 AM
Facebook goes open source - In an interesting maneuver, social network giant Facebook has decided to release its server and data center design as open source. Why did they do this? It's in the hopes that the enterprise tech community will learn how to build better data centers. Facebook routinely tests the limits of what the internet is capable of and at times wishes there was something better. They figure that by releasing their model as open source that the tech community will, quite literally, hack conventional infrastructure into something more usable in the future.

Google Video closing - Google did try its hand at online video on its own years ago, but when they found out they couldn't compete with YouTube, they bought YouTube. Then in 2009, Google disabled any new uploads to the Google Video service at video.google.com, but did keep the existing content online. However, as of April 29, 2011, existing content will no longer be available for playback but have a download option. The download option will then be disabled as of May 13, 2011 and then the service will be closed for good. If you have any video content posted to Google Video, go get it and archive it locally now.

uTorrent 3.0 beta now available for Download!

The beta of uTorrent 3.0 was officially released today. This update to the popular BitTorrent client introduces a wide range of new features and improvements that have been tested in the last few months, including the option to rate and comment on torrent files added to uTorrent, which apparently have been among the most requested in the uTorrent "Idea Bank" website and should give users a better idea of the quality of the files they’re downloading.

uTorrent 3.0 beta adds a new portable mode to run the BitTorrent client without installation as well as the option to stream media torrents while they are being downloaded. It also added the newest version of their remote access functionality to the app, so you can control your downloads from any computer or mobile phone.

Another interesting new option is the super-simple ability to share torrent and torrent links with others. A "drop files to send" area in the bottom left-hand corner lets users create a torrent and start seeding it automatically by simply dragging and dropping files to the uTorrent interface. Users will get a link to send to their friends directly. Or even if you don't create the torrent file, you can always right-click any download and select Send Torrent to share it. There's an option to bundle uTorrent with the shared link to make the process easier on less experienced users.

Besides all this the user interface has been revamped and a "simplified view" was added, all while keeping its characteristic small footprint at around 550Kb. You can download the beta in its 32-bit or 64-bit variants, although the developers warn that the 64-bit version "may be considerably buggier." For now it is only available to Windows users.

Rumor: Samsung to offer a dual-core 2GHz smartphone in 2012.

Samsung Electronics, South Korea's largest electronics manufacturer, is reportedly working on the next big milestone in the smartphone gigahertz race: 2GHz per core. Such processors will narrow the gap between smartphones and desktop PCs, according to Samsung, at least in terms of raw processing power. ARM already has a dual-core Cortex-A9 design capable of such speeds, and we wouldn't be surprised if this is what Samsung is using for the basis of its new processor designs.

"We are planning to release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year," a high-ranking Samsung official is reportedly quoted as saying, according to a Maeli Business Newspaper. "This product will have the data processing capacity of a regular PC." Note that this quote was originally in Korean and has been roughly translated, but the gist is still there.

Samsung also plans to sell the new CPUs, which will likely be launched under Samsung's Exynos brand, to other phone makers. Samsung has been mainly manufacturing mobile CPU for its own product lines, but is planning to expand into mobile processor sales, so you likely won't have to buy a Samsung-branded handset if you want to, shall we say, get up to speed.

The first 1GHz smartphones hit the market some two years ago, dual core CPUs for smartphones are available now, and so it's exciting that we're already heading toward 2GHz dual core CPUs for smartphones. I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited, though I really do hope that the CPUs are developed with battery life in mind. As smartphone typically last me a day, and I would really be annoyed if that time decreased further.

So Apple blocked the sale of Samsung Galaxy Tab on EU. The issue here is the so called Community Design. Essentially, Apple have the monopoly on design of their tablet. Anything that is rectangle with black bevel is a copy of their tablet. It made people think. Didn't JooJoo came out ahead of ipad?

And heck, even the LG's DVD player looks like Apple's tablet:

The punchline? It came out in 2008 :) Way before the ipad.

Natalo nga ata Google sa isang patent bid recently.

Yep, natalo sila sa Nortel patent bidding. Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research In Motion and Sony ang nanalo. This is exciting. Expecting a showdown. Parang The Empire Strikes Back lang, lol! Not that Google is evil (parang mali ang metaphor ko ah).

Kasi pag kaka alala ko, tinira ata ng Microsoft ang Android OS eh dahil may patent daw na ginaya, or something to that effect. Kelangan magbayad ng $10 per Android device na mailalabas ng Samsung, HTC and other manufacturers using Android OS.

This move by Google (buying Motorola Mobility) is to protect their partners (OEMs). Kasi naman, yung ibang companies want to compete via patent hoarding. Yan. Bumanat tuloy ang Google. This is turning out to be like the nuclear arms race of the last century. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), he he he.

Sayang, wala akong mapagpabilihan ng HP TouchPad, $99 (= tax) yung 16GB. Oh well, better luck next time I'm in the U.S. Baka may magdi-discontinue ulit ng product, he he he.

Full potential? :D

Eto sir, pasok ba to sa quad core category?

Dahil ba to sa health condition nya?

From Techspot:

The iconic figure has struggled with various medical conditions through his tenure in Cupertino, battling pancreatic cancer in 2004 and undergoing a liver transplant in April 2009. Jobs has been on medical leave since January 2011, a year plus after returning from the transplant, so his resignation isn't entirely unforeseen.

Yep, his medical condition is the culprit. I may not like some of Apple's tactics but Godspeed to Steve Jobs.

I think yung reason nila kung bakit nila ha-hackin *daw yung Facebook is because para mapakita nila

kung gaano kahina ang security neto? Nung kinuha ko yung Ethics in Information Technology* hacking isn't a

form of crime. Ginagawa talaga ang hacking but from the side of the developer itself para makita kung may

flaws yung Software.

mawala yung source of income nila which is yung advertisers.

In my own views lang naman

And this is disturbing:

Quote
Hours later, Anonymous hacked the website for the attorneys of Sgt. Frank Wuterich, a US Marine who was recently on trial for a massacre of Iraqi civilians stemming from a 2005 incident in Haditha, Iraq. Despite admitting his role in orchestrating a raid on two civilian homes and asking his Marines to “shoot first, ask later,” Wuterich was sentenced to no time in jail.
