Title: Yamaha THR 10
Post by: guitaricci on November 08, 2011, 09:40:28 PM
Any thoughts on this one?

http://www.andertons.co.uk/combo-amps/pid22166/cid691/yamaha-thr10-guitar-amp.asp

"Conventional amps work great on stage. But what about everywhere else you play? Most amps are just small versions of stage amps - but how you play at home isn't just a small version of how you play on stage, so why would an amp based on that really give you what you need?

THR is the first amp truly designed to fit how you play off-stage. Everything you need is here: tones that push amp modelling to a new level, recreating the exact response and experience of playing a tube amp thanks to Yamaha's exclusive Virtual Circuitry Modelling (VCM) technology; ultra-realistic reverbs and effects to complement your playing and push you farther; and true hi-fi quality stereo audio playback that no guitar amp can get close to - all wrapped up in a package designed to mirror how you really play off-stage.

You have your big amp that sounds great cranked up to 10. Maybe you have your practical, smaller amp for rehearsals and smaller shows. Now you have your perfect third amp. The amp for everything else, THR. Prepare to spend a lot more time playing guitar..."

I initially choose the thr10c for boutique amps.....but I went home with the thr10x for high gain  why ? I can also go for a clean tone with slight overdrive on 10x

Brilliant! :-)

This sets the bar higher for a compact 'rig' & not only for home/portable use. If only this thing had a line-out or an XLR socket for venue D.I.'s & recordings, not to mention an input for remote tap tempo controllers (e.g. Boss FS-5U). Then, i wouldn't mind immediately getting one for myself right after my next 'Sold Item' in the classifieds. For now, I can still do away with my Morley JD-10 (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=284330.0). Which is not only designed to be plugged to line-in's & venue D.I.'s, but also can be plugged directly to the microphone input of any home-audio system. Surprisingly works pretty much the same as the above featured device along with hooking up your earphones & audio playback from PC or 'iPod'.

yup...but its really a great amp especially the usb interface..... saka indi manipis ang tunog.  ung ginagawa ng iba, ginagamit nila ung headphone port at ikakabit sa PA..

hmmm...interesting...

para di na ako batuhin ng kapitbahay. ayaw ko kasi nagppractice ng naka headphones. di talaga ok tunog. this is a nice alternative. kinda pricey though. 75w line6 amp na katapat ng 300USD asking price nito.

Depends on your interface, to my experience. If you're plugging regular earphones on your guitar amp it may not work. You may need pro-audio grade ones. But, for my 'home set-up (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=284330.0)', ok na regular earphones for PC and 'iPod'. In fact, i'm only using the one with built-in mic, that's commonly used on call centers, by Artec. Sure, there's compression tied-up with it. But, there's not much to miss apart from using a guitar amp. :-)

Hi, just reviving this thread, and considering buying one soon.

Any modded footswitches for THR aside from this :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP3Ug3_hIrI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP3Ug3_hIrI)

They have a new amp....THR100H and THR100HD. This doesn't look like a "third amp" to me.

Thanks jeba and ios!

@ ios: musta THR nyo sir?

here is the tutorial

I was hoping for the thr10x sana.

Now i only have 1 solution is ask my friend from Japan who will be going home this October if she can look and buy me a THR10x dun.. Fingers crossed!

I had the 10X for a few weeks, but ultimately decided to sell it. Maybe I just couldn't dial it in properly but to my ears, it sounded nothing like the youtube vids (Satchel, Anderton's,etc). It was really 'fizzy' no matter how I tweaked it, and I tried different guitars (single coil strats, LP with humbuckers) through it. The volume level was also surprisingly inadequate (the youtube vids are I think  mic'ed and eq'ed hence the huge wall of sound from the vids and kinda gives a false representation of it's true volume capabilities).

Though it is marketed as a 'third amp' or practice amp.

My Fender Mustang I 20-watt blew this 10X away imho, WAY louder and better tones (free Fuze software to tweak), and for approx 1/3 the price, the better deal. (albeit it's a solid state combo amp)

Of course ymmv. I'm probably just bad at dialing in the tones  :)

Just my .02 centavos

have to disagree tho, i tried this in a gig, was playing with an acoustic guitar. the tones are just outstanding. granted, i was using it for a low gain type of grit for that warm bluesy tone. ganda lang talaga. siguro depende sa application.

paps, magkano mo nabenta yung THR mo?

Yeah it probably sounds good with lower gain tones, but to me the high-gain was 'transistory' sounding, 'fizzy' when I had it. I remember the volume to be 'underwhelming'. The youtube vids make it sound so 'huge' but disappointingly lacking in real life when tested. Of course like I said, ymmv. Experience ko lang.

The new THR100 series may be a different story though.

10K sold to a friend. (virtually) Brand new w box/papers.

I disagree too. I highly recommend this amp. This is not a high volume / gig amp but more of a bedroom/desktop amp. I love it! and it absolutely sound great! It's also portable, I even bring it along during family outings. Also sound great as a recording tool. Some sample clips I recorded with this amp using acoustic, humbucker electric and single coil strat:

yun mismo. ganun  reaction nung friend ko who tested it with a high gain setting. he went for the Mustang as well. hahaha

and yes, mejo mahina siya due to the speaker size, then again, its a personal amp lang naman. but yeah, the lowgain sounds are just pristine and accurate. swabe hahaha

Got my thr10 second hand for 13k.

I agree. Naging 'mapili' na sila when it comes to tones, they don't like 'fizz'. Once you go black.. oh wait wrong phrase lol. :)

Guys who are on the fence about buying this should also be aware of the battery issue in regards to totally powering off when hitting high volume/high gain when powered ONLY by batteries (hindi naka plug-in). I actually experienced this myself with the THR10X model. Hindi naman ata lahat ng unit ay may defect, pero it's not uncommon din.

Check this thread out:

http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/yamaha-thr10-problems-playing-on-battery-power.1077873/

This thread was regarding the THR10 model, pero it's apparently also rampant sa THR10X.

Sorry guys, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to turn people off from buying these units (I love Yamaha products), pero I believe an informed buyer is better served. (I wish someone had told me about it). Personally, this was the other major deal-breaker for me. I bought it because I wanted something very portable to take around, unplugged sa socket. But when I experienced that 'power off' issue', I decided to sell it.. If you keep it plugged in always, it should be no concern.

Btw, my friend whom I sold it to loves it, doesn't care about the issue.

Just sharing my experience with this.

Peace,

MA
