Title: Mike Pedero Workshop Attendance!!!
Post by: KitC on September 23, 2006, 11:25:51 AM
Ok... seating is limited so we'll have to know who are committed to this workshop. Just post your details here so we can organize attendance. Tentative sched is for the latter half of October, timed to sync with the sem break, so there!

First come-first served basis, so post away, people!

im in!

been working with Sonar 4 PE, m-audio 1010lt, and a 12ch behri mixer.
im doing live 8 track live recordings in my studio. 6 issues worth of info from a RECORDING mag subscription...mostly self thought. late nights miking up drums and amplifiers, and playing around with plug-ins...

what i want to learn: i never had formal training in audio recording/editing...and i believe correct basics is very important in moving forward in any discipline...

also: i dont know if some of this might be too advanced, micing techniques, what to look for in a recorded track (correct usable sounds when recording) and how to get them of course, EQ and compressor techniques, recording/mixing vocals.

Long time audio consultant/entrpreneur/guru...

Some radio stations he put up... 99.5RT, 88.3 Citylite, and now 107.5 NU107

He also owns TRACKS Studios... where a zillion legendary OPM albums were recorded... and consulted in the creation of other recording studios.

Among other things...

I think they are all related... there's also Hector Pedero I believe....

By the way, Mike was also the creator of the immortal "YC Bikini Brief" commercial... "for the man who packs a wallop!"

What credentials! YC Bikini Brief, etc.  Seriously, I have been in the music and broadcast business since 1967 (this is not a misprint).  I started at DZUW as a DJ, the first rock station (if I can claim that) here in the Philippines with guys like Stoney Burke (Mike Llamas), Babe Romualdez (now Chairman of Star Publications & Columnist), Ronnie de Asis (Crossover), Charlie Brown, Wayne Enage (Bro. Wayne) Emilio Tuason & Jody Stewart (station owners).  Involved in stations like 99.5RT, RK96, partly owned CitiLites 88.3 and NU107.   Owned TRACKStudios, produced and recorded the two albums of RP with Bob Aves and Goff Macaraeg, did countless commercial jingles that includes Marlboro, San Miguel Beer, More Int'l. Cigarettes, and others.  I was musical director for Kalye Sesame and Batibot together with Louie Ocampo and Bob Aves.  Currently I do acoustic design of recording studios and other acoustic spaces such as those owned by GMA7, AdFarm, ABS-CBN, GC4 in Alabang, Houses of Worship such as Union Church of Manila, Greenhills Christian Fellowship, Ortigas, CCF Alabang, Jesus Reigns Ministries, Bread of Life Crossroads 777, Bread from Heaven Shang, United Bethel Church, a lot more.  An avid musician and guitar player ( I own 28 guitars - there are others who have more.  Arch. Andy Locsin has 172!), I believe I have had enough experience, learning and knowledge regarding audio, acoustics and recording.  These I would like to share with anyone willing to learn.  So there.

Yes, Dero the composer/columnist is my brother, so is Hector (currently in London) who used to play for "Music and Magic."  Indeed, we are a musical family.

The seminar is designed that even though you do not have any background whatsoever, you can join.  All lectures and hands on will be at TRACKStudios.  Since the place is small, limited ang seats.  I am looking at a max of 12 per class, divided into 4 groups, with 3 members each.  Looking at a twice a week meeting of 3 hours each meeting.  Otherwise, a lot of information overload.  We want everyone to learn.

I have mentioned in my previous post what will be discussed.  In the recording process, we will do recording of voice, to be handled by one group while the rest observe and ask questions, then, drums, guitars, other instruments.  We will touch on a lot of mic'ing techniques, use of outboard and mixing.  Each group will have to come up with a final mix project of the same recorded material.  Just a bird's eye view on how we will conduct the course.

I am getting excited myself.  Angee Rozul and Mark, my other engineer promise to sit in and re-learn as well.

Now, for setting up your project studio, I will be discussing this matter with KitC and Marvin.  This will be another phase of the program.

FWIW.

It is, but it's turning out that there are 2 possible workshops/scenarios. One corresponds to Mike P's course structure as outlined in his previous posts - I suggest getting in touch with Mr. Pedero for scheduling and fees.

The other workshop is envisioned to be more geared to a project studio environment. Unfortunately, we had to postpone our meeting due to Milenyo, then our schedules have been busy after that. I plan to meet with Mr. P the week after next barring any problems.

Mike P posted course details in this thread (http://talk.philmusic.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=26002&highlight=); it's among his posts near the bottom. Like I mentioned earlier, those interested can PM Mr. Pedero for schedules and rates. This is a full course and the learning curve can be steep, but what is life without challenge?

Yes, there seems to be two (2) directions here.  The first one is the full course that will include foundations in audio recording up to hands on.  The other one is a short, one day affair that will hope to tackle most asked questions but for an affordable price.  I have yet to talk with KitC regarding plans.  Just watch out for announcements.  We are going through with the seminars.

this is great!

count me in....

i have been a drummer for more than a decade (on and off) and experimented with mixing loops and techno songs on my pc (noob, hehehe). and some home recordings with my band.

been using home studio and sonar and just recently installed adobe audition. and maybe... 40-50% knowledge sa mga mixing boards.

anyway, magkano nga po pala and when?

Looks like we will start our first series sometime after November 1.  We will make sure it will be a Saturday and a Sunday.  We hope to start on the shorties first.  I will make the announcement of schedules and the fees, and most importantly, the topic to be discussed this week.  Watch out.

Yehey ! Nakahabol pa !

Already had a little experience but for different purposes (not music). Used Adobe Audition 1.5, and previously before that, Cooledit. Moving up to Sonar and Nuendo. Just bought a C1 and C2 mics (behringer). Shopping for mic preamps and mixers with direct outs and about to buy a Delta 66 I/O card. And a Samson drum mic kit.

This seminar could help me setup na din as well.

Am looking at November 18 and 19, or 25 and 26, Saturday and Sunday, for the first Audio Workshop.  What do you think of the dates?  It will be a two day. 5 hour session each day workshop.  First day will comprise of certain fundamental audio theories, microphone theories and techniques, then open forum.  The next day will be a continuation of what was left off the day before, then, hands on.  Topic of the workshop will be "Mic'ing your Recording Sessions" with emphasis on drum, guitar and vocal micing.  Maximum number of attendees will be 15.  All sessions will be done in a recording studio - TRACKStudios in Pasig City.  Reservations can be done through tel. nos. 6338710 or 6333175.  Ask for Aileen Francisco.  Registration fees will be PhP 2,000.00 per attendee.  You can call for reservations starting Tuesday, November7, 2006.

I will post a full course outline by tomorrow.

There will be other workshops lined up, so watch out for them.

See you at the Audio Workshop.

If I had a vote, I'd ask for the 25 or 26 kasi I'm organizing a Megajam EB on the 18th-19th. But of course, it's not up to me :D

For a wishlist of topics sana bos Mike for the 2nd session or moving forward, some eye-openers on equipment (compressors, preamps, offboard vs software effects, ), tasteful use of ambience and reverb (room sound vs reverb effects), spectrum utilization, "tuning" a recording room...

and most importantly...mixing strategies for various genres :D

I think 25 and 26 would be the probable dates.  Here are the topics to be discussed: A- Theories and Foundation - 1) Characteristics of sound and its measures; 2) The Ear; 3) Psycho-Acoustics and Applied Acoustics; 4) the Microphone - a) types; b) characteristics; c) mic'ing techniques - c1) stereo mic'ing techniques; c2) instrument and vocal mic'ing techniques; B- Hands On and Application - 1) mic'ing a drum set and critical listening; 2) guitar mic'ing - electric and acoustic; 3) vocal mic'ing.  Part of this will be ambience mic'ing and other techniques to achieve a full sound.  Critical listening will be mostly used here, as it is a very important element in the recording process.  Other matters may be discussed based on what the attendees want, but concentration will be as outlined.

See you all.

Guys, you have to call for your reservations for the Workshop as we can only have 15 participants.  We have gotten a lot of people already in the list.  Kaunti seats available na lang.  Please understand that this is a first come, first served type thing.  So, call Aileen, 6338710 (we are encountering problems with this phone right now) or 6333175.  Office hours, that's 11 to about 6 PM.  Thanks and See you.  Workshop fee is PhP 2K, that's all.

We shall strive to make the workshop a venue for a good learning as well as fun experience.  When an avocation becomes work, then there is no fun anymore.  When no fun, no enjoyment.  No enjoyment, no life.  So, let's have fun.  See you all.

Let me reiterate - the coverage of the workshop shall be 1) Fundamentals of Sound, includes physics of sound, the ear, a little acoustics and psycho-acoustics; 2) mic'ing techniques - types of mics; characteristics; stereo mic techniques; instrument and ensemble mic'ing.  The first day will mainly be theories; second day, hands on and critical listening using mics and instruments.  This workshop is good for both analog and digital - there are no distinctions.  Prepare questions and share experiences so the discussion can be lively.  Everyone is suppose to learn and have fun in this workshop.  See you.

See you workshoppers at about 1 PM.

If we do another "foundation" workshop, when do you want it?  There was a suggestion on DIY acoustical treatments for home studios.  That seems to be interesting.  Who is interested?  Then, the mixing project.  Let's see what we can cook up.

sir mike, im particulary interested in learning the basics of mixing and/or mastering (using tools such as compression and EQ) on a home DAW setting -- as alot of recording musicians have problems with these -- including me. also,  i'd like to join in the next "foundation" seminar.

thanks very much.

Post by: kamada on November 28, 2006, 01:57:16 AM
all I can say is

wow! 8-)

it wasn't so much the basics of sound that was the highlight of the workshop for me, though i learned a lot of things that i didn't know before. the highlight was learning that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, ika nga ng led zep, "let the music be your master, let the master take control..." I wish this workshop happened four years ago...

sir mike, the workshop really opened my mind to new possibilities, thank you very much, you just changed one life for the better.

p.s. : master master, when will you teach us recording kung fu again? sana yung 12 session thingie na yung ituloy mo sir, though sana sundays lang lagi ang sched para most of us can make it. saturday kasi may pasok ako til 3 pm eh.

@balta: kelan tayo jajam parekoy?

Nakakaiyak at nakaka touch naman ng damdamin ang mga comments ninyo.  Kamada, if I opened your eyes into better possibilities, that's a big reward enough for me.  To the others, I really hope your learned something that you can use to continue what you would want to pursue.  Thank you for your trust, and ... let's go on with our pursuit to better audio and recordings.  Mabuhay kayong lahat!

Title: Re: Mike Pedero Workshop Attendance!!!
Post by: mikep on December 05, 2006, 11:04:22 PM
About the same, but a little more focused especially on the micing part.  I would want the people to really participate and experience themselves.  Also, there certain aspect I was not able to touch in guitar micing.  Isa pa, kulang ang oras kaya instead of just 1 to 6, gagawin nating 1 - 7 = 6 hours per session.

The same topic outline.  On the first day, we will start with physics of sound; the ear; acoustics and psycho-acoustics; merienda, then types and characteristics of mics and stereo mic techniques; open forum.  On the second day, critical listening especially on mixes with emphasis on the instrumentations; vocal micing; guitar and amp micing; merienda, then, drum micing; open forum.  All throughout, we'll have questions and answers.

Maximum of 12 workshoppers para mas concentrated and personal.

So, there.  We'll try to hit first or second week of January, 2007.

Sir Mike! Classmates! Si Francis/Kapi ito. Ngayon lang ako nakapag-post dito. Hehe.

Sobrang salamat kay sir Mike, sobrang dami naming natutunan noong dalawang araw na iyon. Overload! Hehe.

Kung magkaroon ng workshop on mixing/mastering and acoustics/soundproofing, sali ako! Ito sir, sana mid-february meron na po, sasamantalahin kong break sa Senado by that time (kasi kampanya na).

Yung fundamentals workshop this January, I gather na same curriculum pa rin but mas may concentration on micing techniques... can I sit in on the second day? Magvo-volunteer ako na techboy, i.e., utusan. *wink wink.*

2nd Workshop had an extension today as we were not able to finish last Sunday.  Aside from the usually mic positionings and other stuff, the group was treated to "An Afternoon of Mixing with Angee Rozul."  The group heard and saw how Angee mixes his songs.  A demo of an old Bamboo recording was mixed in front of everyone.  Sayang, ayaw ipadinig ni Angee yung bagong Bamboo.  Nevertheless, I hope the experience this afternoon (Sunday 4 to about 8 pm) was well worth it.  As usual the workshop sessions are full of surprises.

Thanks to all the participants.  I hope I was able to impart some useful recording knowledge.  Good luck to each one.  Warm regards.

See you next time.

For sure.  I am officially having everything registered so we can put up a real school.  Hopefully with that, we can do scholarships and get some grants.  Nahuhuli na tayo. Tayo lang walang recording school sa Asia.

I will definitely call on those knowledgeable people who are willing to impart their knowledge and expertise to others (KitC, Jepoy, Skunky, others?).  Can't do this alone.  Success can only happen in this project if done in a cooperative effort to improve our sound industry.

mr. mikep, pwde ba akong maging estudyante? heheh! nakapagrecord kami under angee rozul a few years ago sa tracks, while nagaaprentice yung drummer namin under nya. nakakainspire sya talaga. magtatayo ako ng kahit home based studio muna once nakaipon na, pero all the recording skills na alam ko ay based lang sa mga panood nood ng pagrecord ng mga engineers at sa internet at pagkalikot ng mga recording software (digital performer, pro tools, at sonar). sana magka workshop po ulit kayo at sana pwde manood ang mga wla pang masyadong alam sa recording heheheh :D

sa-an ka located? sa Pinas? sa US? If in the US, you can buy Sonar at any music store like Sam Ash or Guitar Center. Specialized music stores that sell DJ equipment also have music software. You don't have to use a credit card to buy music software, you can pay cash. I did it this way when I first started recording. I first bought Cubase 3.1 as my first serious piece of recording software and never looked back. Support the industry. The more people who support legal buying of software, the better the scene gets because the companies are able to rely on more people to research, develop and improve their current stock of products. Steinberg, Logic, Cakewalk and Ableton have a niche clientele and they work closely with their customers to give them what they need so people like me can make music.

Gotcha. I think si Boss Kit would be your guy. He is quite knowledgeable with who sells what as far as pro audio sa Pinas. I would pick his brain and ask him where he might refer you to get your stuff. Since closer ka sa HK at Japan, you could go that way too. Ishibashi is a place I often shopped from when I was in Japan and even here in the US, the company is reliable, fast, and very communicative.

Famous last words... hehe.

On the upside, you can save a lot by going virtual and recording/mixing everything in the box. Just try to approach the recording as a whole; one of the biggest faults in mixing is making the instrument you are familiar with sound the best even if it isn't in the proper context with the rest of the mix.

I am preparing a workshop on "setting up your project studio with emphasis on simple acoustical solutions for the project studio."  This might happen March.  Alongside this, we will offer the "Fundamentals of Audio Recording" once again.  Another subject matter in the works is "Building Up Your Mix" which will deal with how to mix music and songs.  I'll announce the dates later on.

KitC, you are right on on this.  Also, as you mentioned previously, the process is a never ending matter, especially if you have your own studio.

In a workshop or seminar, the facilitator is not the only one talking or sharing all the time.  The rest of the attendees are suppose to do that as well.  If we have an attendance that would be doing a lot of sharing, everybody will learn a lot more.  Yes, Jepoy, please attend and participate in the discussions next time.

There is a fundamental course that we offer every now and then, just for attendees to understand what sound is all about.  In the works however, is a higher course; one will be setting up a project studio with emphasis on acoustics of the space, and the other, on building up your mix.

Watch out for details soon.  Siguro after holy week na.  Masyadong busy this March.  Max of 15 students only.

BTW, if there are attendees who would like to get into the fundamentals ... will do it again this April.  If you could just sign up and let me know.  Thanks

Hello, Sir Mike!

Have you got a definite schedule for the workshop on Fundamentals?  I am interested in enrolling my son and myself if your schedule is viable.

Ideal would be on the second Saturday and Sunday of May.  Anyway for how many sessions would this be?

Thanks a lot for a speedy reply.

No sked yet, but we might just do that.  Do the Fundamentals on the 2nd Saturday and Sunday of May. and schedule the "Building Up Your Mix" at an earlier date, probably end of April.  The workshops are 2 day affairs, from 1 PM to 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday.

FWIW

can i come? :-)

Sure.  As long you are interested in audio and willing to learn.  Call Aileen 6338710 or 6333175 for particulars.  As I said, we still have to set the dates.

FWIW

yes sir, im willing to learn.. :-) im more interested in recording than to polaying music nowadays.. :-P thanx! maybe ill call later.. :-D

Preparing a seminar sometime towards the end of June or early July.  Watch out for it.  Will probably concentrate on mixing techniques.  A little knowledge is important so, it will be good if you already have attended the fundamentals module, or have attended KitC and Jepoy's planned coming seminar.

I'm really interested in this.  Kaso wala akong idea kung san magsisimula..  :?

Hmm, for the record, I only know about direct inject recording on digital media (PC)...
Asa lang ako sa drum machine softwares and MIDI bass lines and other backing tracks I find on the web.
Ginagamit ko dati was cakewalk and sometimes goldwave to snip a few inconsistencies.  Now I'm trying to figure out Cubase LE (bundled w/ Zoom G2).

Bottom line:
Meron bang mini-session for n00bs like me? :-P

I'd read ahead kaso di ko sure kung papasok sa kukote ko mga binabasa ko lalo na't wala akong makitang actual stuff...

Sorry, guys, I have not found the time to plan out the next seminar because of workload.  We are now in the acoustic construction stage of the new GMA7 studios on EDSA (the big construction you see next to the GMA Network Center and MRT on EDSA) where I am acoustical consultant; the rehabilitation of the Lung Center of the Philippines Auditorium; pre-construction of the new Mission Training Center of the Chuirch of the Latter Day Saints in White Plains;refurbishment of the UP Law Center Auditorium in Diliman; conceptual design stage of a huge, multi-storey hotel and residences in Makati, right at the corner of Makati Ave. and Pasay Road, as well as smaller projects such as home theaters, studios and churches.  So, .. just hang on there.  Once the work load is a little lighter (I have acoustics apprentices training with me at the moment), we'll do a series of acoustics, recording, mixing and other facets lined up for you.  This may happen sooner than you think.  At sali kayong lahat.

Thanks for your patience.  Best regards,

If there is a need, we can design a one or two day seminar this summer here at TRACKStudios, where we have already done several.  We can concentrate on a bit of audio foundation, acquisition and mixing.  Definitely, there will be a cost as seminars and learning of this type normally would entail costs.  If there are those interested, say so.  We are presently conducting some seminars and training programs for private entities and we can use the same training outline for those who want to expand their knowledge in the recording process and acoustics.  Let me know.

PCEC - Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches

Our pastor was given an invitation for the event. Sorry brother, I don't have any idea if this is open to all or by invitation only.

The seminar is basically on church sound.  This a project of some Christian churches' organization, to improve the quality and intelligibility of church audio.  I still have to find out exactly the limits of my topic.  The approach is "live sound" - preparation, what to go for, how to do it, etc.  This will include system set up, micing, mixing, levels and all.

I just don't know if it is open to all.  Call PCEC.

Hello JV21!

Sana lang huwag mong masamain pag sinagot ka ng "you may google"... o kaya use the search button.  Ibig sabihin lang nun, either nasa internet na talaga yung sagot mo o kaya may comprehensive thread nang napagusapan.  There is a possibility that your questions are considered FAQ's (frequently asked questions). Instead of starting a new thread, pwede na sigurong mai-refer ka sa isang previously existing topic.

I myself experienced this.  For the nth time, I had to ask Guitar Central how to change strings on my guitar na may Floyd Rose.  I got the answer na, "please check YouTube." I actually did and now I know how.

Try to imagine how many forumites have continuously asked these questions -

Sir, bakit kailangang i-premaster ang mix ngayon?

Are Behringer stomp pedals any good, considering their cheap price?

Ano ba ang scalarizer?

Pare, ano ang pinakamasarap na burger?

If you have been adviced to go to a related thread, okay lang yon.  Mas matrabaho nang kaunti...pero di tapad tayo tamarin para di gawin.

FWIW.  Peace.

OT - I'd like to update my database on this... personally, it was a toss-up among the old Dayrit's, Jack's burger in Monumento, and the old A&W when they opened up the very first branch along H'way 54 on the place where Club Dredd used to be. (man, I'm fudging old...  :| ) Loved the smell of those burgers, though.  :-D

But wait, A&W wasn't where Club Dredd used to be.  That used to be the old D'Mark's !!! A&W was nearer that area na may dating Fish Market along EDSA (mas malapit nang kaunti sa Farmers).  The other A&W was in UN Avenue. Dayrit's of course is an alltime favorite. They are now here along Mother Ignacia tapat ng ABS.  They closed the one in the Morato rotonda after the Cochise Beebom/Antonio Sanchez incident (remember?).  Don't know if the one near La Salle Taft is still there.

Boy, am I hungry.

Boy, aren't we really old!

Boy, we are really OFF TOPIC! Sorry.

Still OT (and getting hungrier):

I was but a pup when we went to that EDSA A&W; it was on a gentle slope so you could be spot on about the location. I remember the waitresses rollerskating to our car (a Ford Fairlane) and setting the tray on the window. Too young to appreciate the waitresses then (I remember they wore short rollerderby skirts), but old enough to know good food.

Ha! Back to topic...

(Further OT)  I'd prefer the old Tropical Hut burgers when they used to have a branch in Quezon Avenue where National Bookstore is now.  They had a store on EDSA/Ortigas Ave. also.  Their burgers now do not taste as good as they used to.  A & W definitely is a favorite.  After parties and gigs (I was in early high school then), A % W is the place to be.  During those times, 5 Pesos (green colored paper money) used to fill up half tank of my old Volks (started driving kinda early; we used to fake our ages to get licenses).  Those were the days ....

Now back to topic ... sorry, just could not help reminiscing the good old days ... where Fender guitars and Vox amps made by Aroin in Sta. Mesa looked like the real thing! I wonder if there are still those fakes in existence now.

I might open up one soon, especially on mixing and use and understanding of equalizers and other outboard gear.  I have had a lot of queries from people, most especially from Churches.  I could zero in on live mixing - from mic use to final mix.

At the moment I am training some audio engineers of a major TV network.  The first batch is to graduate this month.  I could use the same training modules for Church use.  If anybody is interested, let me know.

Hi, KitC.  Very simple syllabus.  It starts off with The Physics of Sound - an understanding of how sound is produced, behaves, characteristics, etc., as received by the ear (psyco-acoustics) + safety issues on hearing.  Next is a full discussion on the microphone, which is the start of the acquisition portion and how sound is transduced from acoustic to electronic and vice versa, characteristics and types of mics; discussion on mic techniques and usage for voice and instruments; problem areas like phasing, etc.  Then, an extensive understanding of the mixer - its various parts; setting gains, use of the auxes, and an exhaustive discussion on equalization,  characteristics and usage; understanding important frequencies that help out in mixing, etc.  Finally, effects processors - understanding them, their usage in controlling sound and suggested settings.  This includes compressor limiters, reverbs, delays, noise gates, expanders, duckers, etc.  Hands on and "ear experiences" are all part of the course.  So far, with the training I have conducted for TV, it has, to a certain extent, worked.  It is a process.  My objective is basically to plant awareness on the part of the trainees - provide them with the right foundation.  With the initial knowledge that they have acquired, they will "experience sound" and understand it more as they encounter it in their work.  The ability to appreciate audio does not happen overnight.  It takes some time to "acquire the taste," ika nga.  They are to exert effort to train their ears to "listen and hear," their most important instrument in audio.  As long as the right foundation is planted, correct practices follow.  My work is done.

Yun lang.  Regards,

can't wait for this one, sir mike, last time i heard you was 2006 pa po. suggestion po sana na in as much as you mentioned church people making the queries on audio and considering the fact that they volunteer their services to the church, baka po pwede na mas mababa ang fee for them. a handful of volunteers from our church have been sent in similar seminars (including yours po) in the past but in as much as learning audio is a long process and not just a 1 seminar thing, it would help a lot to make it affordable for them to continue their learning. perhaps a written recommendation from the church or something similar can be required to avail of any discount for legitimate church volunteers. hoping you'll consider this thanks po.
