Title: what is the typical pinoy hipster rig?
Post by: jm the mute on November 04, 2014, 03:05:28 PM
teles? offsets? flannel?
can the typical pinoy hipster guitarist/musician be unique or obscure in terms of equipment if they can only access the same shops & stores?

pwede siguro tele or offset na tatak RJ pero souped up lahat para ok naman functionally. then wear it really high like those guys who wear the electric spanish guitars really high and stuff.

pwede rin guitars assembled from parts, then strip the paint off then stain the wood with coffee or do some really cool trippy stuff with the finish.

you can go the lo-fi hipster route and hook up to tiny practice amps and mic that up. fill up your rig with MetalZones and DS-100s and whatever else high school kids use.

try hooking up a guitar to a preamp then into some Korg equipment that processes signals. it could be a Kaoss Pad or a monotribe, whatever, as long as it's not a pedal. the crowd would have no idea what you just did to your guitar. sometimes obscurity can come from using equipment meant for another instrument.

oh, and don't forget to paint your effect pedals, and buy some boutique ones too, the ones without labels. use a wood pedalboard you made yourself.

all that aside, it's always pretty much a tele (thinline depending on your view), plaid shirts, chinos, boat shoes, thick rimmed glasses, weed in a vaporizer, tube combo amps, a couple of boutique dirt pedals, and probably a trem pedal, and a band with a synths guy.

Me kilala akong marunong gumawa walanakamingyelo ata username niya haha #shamelessplug!

If I wanted to project a hipster image and be limited to to locally available gear, I'd do the Jack White lo-fi thing, go for a Danelectro 63 guitar, Fab fuzz pedal, and use an 80s karaoke/minus-one machine as a combo amp.

Hehe sakin nahihipster-an (if there's such term) ako kay Nitoy Adriano (The Jerks, The Octaves). Lagi ko nakikita sa studio sa Bicutan. Sya yung totoong hipster na di poser para sain :) Sama mo na sa guitar gear. just his coral pink strat plugged straight sa amp, ready to rock na. Solid pa guitar playing :)

use a wood pedalboard you made yourself.

this was just like me until i grew my rig beyond my wood plank........replaced it with a bigger wooden board!

tingin ko this will fit the bill sa mga naka tele (aray), jaguars, jazzmasters with a huge pedal board peppered with unmarked pedals that only 3 are
working at any given time haha playing music with obssesively long titles and obscure titles, bordering on prog / gaze and other what-nots  :-D

Hipsters are mostly into indie. Look at indie rock rigs you can find your answer there.

Telecasters. Either that or offset guitars with the bridges replaced with TOMs and the trems blocked off.

I've been slinging a Tele since 1983, and it saddens me how the guitar is somehow code for "hipster" now.

naisip ko lang, di ba mas obscure or ironic if naka-pointy guitar ka. sobrang "IN" na kasi ng teles and offsets these days.

Now you have a hipster band!

I had this magazine during the late 90s/early 2000s I dont think the term "hipster" has  been coined yet. Anyway it had this cool section of comic strips about the indie scene back then and in that issue it had this story of 2 indie kids arguing which went like:

"what?! you composed a song and actually recorded a demo? ,  you totally lost your indie cred now!"

I actually want to have a wooden stripped down rock pedalboard, tapos either ipapalilok ko yung design or ipapa burn/etch thing ko yung design. yun ang hipster. otherwise, hanap lang ng solid plank of wood tapos velcro at rubber feet, solb na

neon pink na Ibanez rg na modified with soapbar pickups (for the jangle/twang or whatever)
unlabeled ts808 and muff clones with personally customized "art" na "cool"
a boss dd20, line 6 dl4, ehx memory man deluxe, mxr carbon copy...basta lahat ng sikat na delay para tapos na ang usapan
phasers (same as above), tremolo (same as above)
a/b/y switch para pwede mag switch to a microkorg (ung first version with wooden side panels para mas "cool")
sound activated LEDs (for show)
diy pedalboard na may naka-dikit na toy action figures, mustache, ball jar...or whatever
bright colored coily cables
duct tape to secure straps sa strap button
walang amp, saksak lang sa venue amp..whatever is available

any odd shaped 60s era guitar plugged directly to the mic input of an 80s boombox with its speaker cones torn to shreds and a nintendo ds 1 for the drums.

and the tshirt of course is important, the byrds, primal scream or any c86 bands.

You Know You’re a Hipster Worship Guitarist When…
Posted on 11 March, 2012 by Karl — 117 Comments ↓

And I can say these things because I am a worship guitarist, and a lot of these are true about me. That’s the rule; you’re allowed to make fun of things you are. And Nicolas Cage. So…you know you’re a hipster worship guitarist when…

when you no longer feel awkward before service at church because you can spend the downtime pretending to mess with your pedals.
when you own a Morgan amp.
when you own two Morgan amps.
when you run a Strymon Blue Sky stereo into your two Morgan’s.
when you plug a Duesenberg into your pedalboard. (Or a Tele.)
when you politely email Strymon about the shortcomings of the Timeline every time it delays a wrong note you hit, and then post about it on Gear Page. ‘Ya, I’ve already contacted Strymon about that, and Ethan says they’re working on it. Because, to be completely honest, a delay pedal that can’t intuitively sense when I hit a wrong note, is totally unusable live.’
when you still talk about John Mark McMillan as if no one has ever heard of him.
when you liked Mutemath before they were cool.
when you complain about the injustices of mass-produced overseas gear via twitter from your iPhone.
when every riff you play sounds like U2, but you still maintain that they’re overplayed and unoriginal.
when you hate U2, but dig The Edge’s innovative approach to the guitar.
when you know the names of every Hillsong guitarist.
when instead of saying, ‘The lead goes like this’, you say, ‘Well Nigel does this.’
when you are honestly able to convince yourself to pay rush shipping because you legitimately believe worship won’t happen without that fuzz pedal.
when you complain about the snobbishness of The Gear Page, on posts in Facebook guitar gear groups.
when you have a pedalboard as big as the sun.
when you’ve sold your Fulldrive for a Tim, your Tim for a King of Tone, your King of Tone for a Jetter Gain Stage, your Gain Stage for a Wampler Ecstasy, your Wampler for a Rockett Flex Drive, your Flex Drive for a Pearl, your Pearl for a JHS Double Barrel, and then end up using your stock TS9 most of the time.
when you battle for ‘Praise and Worship’ to be recognized as a legitimate message board musical genre.
when you consider yourself innovative for lowering the mix level on your dotted eighths.
when you wear wristbands and stripe socks, but still maintain that ‘you’re not hipster.’ Right. Because you were so wearing stripe socks in 2004.
when you Instagram 7 photos a day of your ‘updated pedalboard’, even though no one can tell the difference due to the vintage ’70′s lighting effect.
when you pontificate on pedals you’ve never played…or sometimes even heard of.
when you hate Rob Bell, love Francis Chan, and have a dust-covered copy of Blue Like Jazz you’ve never read.
when, if the power to the whole building went out, your rig could still run for two hours. (In fact, you rig was probably the reason for the power outage.)
when you miss prayer to pull your Pedal Power out form under your Pedaltrain to change the dipswitch and test out your Fulltone OCD on 9 vs. 12 volts in a live situation. (Oh yikes…I’ve so done that.)
when you have an ambient album. ;)
It’s really, really refreshing to laugh at yourself every once in a while. We’re such goobers. And I’ll gladly risk sounding cliche here because it’s just so incredibly true and really awesome: God’s grace is amazing.

Splendid.
Karl.

The most hipster guitar rig

^^^ This is a riot!! hahaha

A fender jaguar or tele with at least 1 sticker on it ("mean people suck", or "I support [insert cause of choice]"), excess string ends left uncut. Very frequent use of a capo.
Amp must be a worn looking fender combo with reverb set to at least 8. Bonus hipster points for tweed covering and/or wheat grillcloth. Usually uses 3 or 4 off brand pedals (no two are the same brand or shape). No pedalboard; all cables and pedals are carried in the smallest suitcase from Grandma's old luggage set from the 60s.
Definitely wears skinny jeans and high top black chucks or some other [grape]-looking equivalent. Wrinkled print long sleeve button down shirt with a t shirt of some band you've never heard of underneath. If it's a gig night, black vest over top and a pork pie hat.

maituturing kung typical hipster kung
-offset ang gitara
-payat na malaki ang tyan o pwet
-distortion at delay lang ang guitar effects
-may kulay yung ibang part ng buhok
-malakas mag yosi
-madaldal pagsilay nagsamasama
-nag a-adik-adikan look

actually, there was a time when I...
had an accordion(got it from pier...smelled like pier)
3 vintage analog synths (wish I still had them)
I had a 60s/70s style "maleta" for a pedal container...used it for a night (hassle dalhin...pero "cool" hehe)
diy pedal board made of stuff from ace hardware (panel board+rubber feer+drawer handles)
a smaller diy pedal board (maliit na white board, kalikot audio psu na neon green ang ilaw for the WHOA)
I've always wanted a jaguar since the mid-90s but never owned one ( I now play an 80's Gibson V and a soldano inspired siochi \m/)
I had a shot-lived "electronic music" band and recorded some songs (still in my soundcloud)

anyway...I guess I was...and still is :p

maituturing kung typical hipster kung
-offset ang gitara
-payat na malaki ang tyan o pwet
-distortion at delay lang ang guitar effects
-may kulay yung ibang part ng buhok
-malakas mag yosi
-madaldal pagsilay nagsamasama

I actually want to have a wooden stripped down rock pedalboard, tapos either ipapalilok ko yung design or ipapa burn/etch thing ko yung design. yun ang hipster. otherwise, hanap lang ng solid plank of wood tapos velcro at rubber feet, solb na

actually, any 3/4 na guitar para madaling dalhin kapag naka-fixed gear bike

(those 3/4 flying Vs at RJ music are quite interesting...I wanna buy one for my son hehe)

"Hipsterism" is so broad you really cant tell. Although I dont know how the hell indie, shoegaze, experimental now is considered hipster music lol

On guitars they use all fender except strats
Gibson except flying v , lp customs

Any other guitars except metal guitars

Expect od reverb maybe fuzz if brave enough

How to spot a hipster: You really cant pinpoint what they're using if we talk gear because no hipster would admit they are one haha. Never mind the music they play it doesnt matter listen first if they constantly whine about other bands to make them selves more credible. Thats how u spot one also the unnecessary "word-play". Sometimes its not about the music anymore its about creds and coolness, rarity.  that sucks Lol

actually coily cables are cool and funky...

pero in my opinion di siya practical.. mabigat, and pag tumatalon talon ka humahapas siya sa sahig..and medyo bulky compared sa conventional cables..

coily pros are

1.coolness factor
2.neat siya

pero decided not to utilize it..pang bahay lang...bale yung connection ko sa amp to the pedal board..para madali madistinguish...

yep..ako rin may white vox coily cable na binili ko for the "WHOA" factor. I don't jump or run around kaya ok lang na gamitin sa gig...kaso faulty minsan ung
plugs nya kaya sa bahay ko na lang ginagamit ngayon....while wearing my boat shoes, flannel shirt and indian headdress (syempre joke lang yung last part)

I can consider myself as a hipster so i'll give a feedback on this base on my understanding of what is a "hipster", usually hipsters ay yung mga taong iwas sa mainstream ideas or items. they prefer to look different and unique compared to others, which is a way to express themselves and not to "impress" other people.

from  1 - 10 scale i can say i'm a level 4 hipster considering the following:

1 - my guitars/accessories usually have unique color ( not black/white/red)
2- i dress uniquely thou it should still be appropriate with the weather and venue.
3 - i don't quite dig the mainstream (top chart 100 ) music or should i say i prefer indie bands.
4- mahilig sa kape / vintage items (typewriter/old cameras)

I guess, anything other than popular stuff... stay away from strats, or les pauls...offsets, fiberglass, beatup student guitars...fuzzes, discontinued boss pedals...amps, mostly fenders and off the beaten track brands, no marshalls or highend boutique stuff...coily cables..some pins and badges on their straps...addition of interesting instruments, electronic gadgets etc. adding texture and spunk..
thick glasses, duct tape for straplocks..accompanied by fashionista crowd..intellectuals..artists,writers..philosophers..highly opinionated individuals..
usually on their vespas, or VW karmann ghias,combi's..

Rakista:

kids in tight skinny jeans, with some black tshirt with a deathmetal band print..loaded with Ibanez', and metal dirt pedals or MFX units..through orange or Marshalls..
some piercings and tats...long hair..and leather wrist bands..skate shoes..with their bmx or skateboards..downing a few bottles of redhorse before, during, after the show...

i beg to disagree mr. gandy on the "no highend boutique stuff" i think may pagka hipster-ish din yun!
spending tons of money just to find that tone that makes you "unique"
i guess it depends on how you define the term, for me the stereotypical hipsters are the
ones who try too hard to be unique

but hey no hate here lahat naman tayo at some level ganun din, everybody wants to be special  :)
and i think there's nothing wrong with that pero sympre everything in moderation
things only go bad when its in excess

ang "COOL" siguro kung ganito lineup:

walang drummer. instead, drum circle. yung mga pa-earth people na naka-djembe at darbukha na bentang-benta pag mga cultural events. tapos singer na naka-ukulele na mukhang minor tapos nagsysynthesizer in 1 or 2 songs. bassist na naka double bass. yung gitarista nagsysynth din. tapos lahat sila naka native indian headwear and warpaint na neon colors

pangalan ng banda "Helvetika"

pag punk: pay-to-play / ticket selling yung gig.

i guess there good and bad hipsters.

good hipsters I believe still have good taste in music. you will notice in their music that there is passion. maybe these are the ones that can stand out, not stick out.

bad hipsters probably are just those who like to show off. yung tipong hindi na pinag isipan yung compositions, nag search lang ng mga hipster riffs tapos copy riff na, then copy clothes, then they become a society. Then its like a virus, hawa-hawa na kasi uso, then may mga makikiuso (worse hipsters I guess) na di naman bagay. hehehe! but I respect them, its their social life.
