Need help with fixing an old guitar.
« on: June 10, 2016, 08:32:38 PM »
Heya, I'm looking for advice on what to do with my old guitar. Long story short, I broke the electronics + pickguard when I was younger (was trying to do guitar spins), so all I have is the body, and the neck which thankfully, is a bolt-on. It's an old RJ copy, and I want to restore it for personal reasons, since it was my uncle's guitar when he was still alive.

Here's an album with some photos:

So, pwede pa kaya i-salvage to? Kasi medyo start from scratch yung mangyayari kasi body lang talaga sya. Or would I be better off just buying a new guitar, tapos yun na lang ipasetup ko?

That looks easy enough to fix pero I'd rather get a new guitar.  Mangangati ka rin eventually pero nabawasan na yung budget mo sa pagpaayos dyan.  Maraming ok sa classifieds na swak sa budget mo.

Kahit anong upgrade ang gawin mo it is still an rj guitar talo ka pag binenta mo later. Tago mo na lang kung may sentimental value and buy a better guitar.

Uy, tukayo! (My real name is Alwyn, BTW.)

Depends on what your priority is right now.

If your priority is to have that restored for sentimental reasons, you could always buy cheap materials. Kumbaga, tumunog lang. In that case, maybe you could set a limit like 2.5 to 3k and spend the rest for a new guitar. Kasi, I think an OEM strat pickguard would cost you no more than 500. Tapos a 2nd hand ceramic set of Strat pickups may cost you around 1k tops. Yung generic 250k pots, siguro mga not more than 100 pesos isa so 300. Yung capacitor wala pang 20 pesos yon. The rest you can spend on a reasonably priced luthier for his services.

Pero kung priority mo naman is to have a decent guitar to gig with, itodo mo na dun sa bagong guitar yung budget mo.

Buy a new/used guitar nalang for your budget, then 2nd priority na muna yung repairs sa old guitar. Tama, it will cost more or less 3k for electronics/loaded pickguards/basic setup para marestore yung working state nung old guitar mo. So mas madali na ipunin yon after makabili ka ng new/used one.

baka instable nadin yung wood (warp), frets (popped out and sharp) , truss rod (di na maadjust) ng RJ...

bili na ng bago..tapos..pag minod mo na yung guitar na bago...lipat mo parts sa RJ unti unti... good luck!

advanced happy NGD!

@ op

i'd suggest you go with the 15k for a used, decent, working guitar.

If it were me...

and as an alternative to what af villaruel outlined...
I'd scour the classifieds for a cheap secondhand strat-clone
(I've seen some horrible-looking, but electronically-sound
strat-copies selling for as little as 1.5k), and cannibalize the
poor thing for parts to (re)build your uncle's old guitar...

as af villaruel says, "tumunog lang".
If I buy new parts, kahit sa Raon + Deeco pa 'ko bumili ng
POS parts, I can wind up spending more than 3-5k, if I'm not
careful, lalo na't the bridge/trem are missing.

Vital learning experience ang mod/build ng guitar, so it's not
just sentimental pay-off. That said... kapag tumunog na 'yan,
itatabi ko na sa aparador as a memento.

I'd buy a brand-new, decent guitar for myself.
Now, kanya-kanyang taste ^'yan, but I've said it before:

Nothing forces one to master proper technique quite like an
'original Telecaster'-type design. Everything from body shape
and materials to pickups/wiring is unforgiving of sloppiness,
so lantad ang lahat ng sablay sa pag-tugtog. Sapilitan tuloy
na magpaka-tino, hwehehe.

JM2, and good luck
