Yeah.. Quoted to me one time by a fellow guitarist (a shredder) while i was doin some blues licks of my own. Then i asked him saan ba galing ang modern rock music? diba sa blues.. Then i showed him some shred licks and sabi ko sa kanya, "Mas maganda pag versatile ka diba."

me and my childhood friend, a great guitarist, were jamming a few months ago. he was using his Ibanez GIO and I was only using my acoustic guitar. he started shredding the living sh*t out of his guitar and he told me to show him my skills. I started playing some fingerpicking pieces on my acoustic guitar and he looked unimpressed. he then asked me:

friend: can't you shred?
me: nope. my style is more on acoustic fingerpicking.
friend: A REAL GUITARIST CAN SHRED!
me: .............. 

only a handful of people can appreciate my style of playing. just because I can't shred, doesn't mean I'm not a REAL guitarist.

may kilala ako dati na magaling maggitara pero walang sariling gear. no guitars, no amps, no pedals, wala lahat. kung may gig, he will just borrow from someone. ewan ko lang ngayon kung may guitar na siya.

actually madami ata ganun, gitarista ng kuya ko, galing din mag gitara, he was mg childhood guitar hero, meron lang sya cry baby.. so mali yung kasabihan? or depende sa pananw mo bilang isang musikero?

in my own opinion, I don't believe in that saying "you're not a real guitarist if you don't have your own guitar". depende kasi yan sa situation eh. what if he/she doesn't have a guitar because they can't afford to buy one? not all of us can afford buying guitars. ako nga I can barely afford one eh.

i agree, unles you b*%ch about it, or mayabang pa, ibang usapan na siguro un siguro if you love your craft enough, mag save up din talaga ang "guitarista" for a decent guitar eh

tama.  I do find it annoying sometimes though if someone comes to me to borrow my guitar for a gig. I lent my guitar once, it came back with 2 broken strings.

back to topic: misconception - laging late ang gitarista sa jam, bassit mas madalas!

Tama.. tulad nung isa kong kaband mate. he's an awesome guitarist pero wala siyang sariling gitara kasi di niya kayang bumili dahil sa family needs. End up e binigay ko yung isa kong strat sa kanya.

well in my case, I'm not lazy. wala nga lang time to get a teacher because of my hectic study schedule. siguro after I graduate this year I will use my free time to really study music theory.

good for you, ako lazy.. i used to work in with alot of music teachers na naging tropa ko kasi nakakasabay sa pag yosi yosi sa office, they explain alot of those stuff and una palang parang ayioko na marinig, feeling ko it takes out the fun pero i admit na kailangan talaga un to get better sa craft, maybe one of these days makuha ko din ung motivation na meron ka.

I also felt that way back then when I was new to guitar playing. I'm a self-taught guitarist and I thought it's not necessary to learn basic music theory but as time passes, I realize more and more how wrong I was and I regret not learning it.

yup graduating na actually. I've sacrificed my practice time for my studies and it's worth it in my opinion. as for my skills, I'm still a complete noob but I'm still trying to improve my playing. yun nga lang wala akong background sa music theory. not even a little bit.

bro for me basta marunong ka mag gitara gitarista  kana (pera lang kung may bitbit kalang na gitara at hindi ka marunong pinabuhat lang  ). pero kung may banda ka at nag peperform for me naman musician ka nun IMHO
