i guess for some rock/metal is like rice you eat it everyday never get tired of it and getting into other musical styles (e.g. jazz for this matter) is enhancing the eating experience

IMHO, maturity in terms of music has more to do with lyrics/songwriting than with the various genres. :)
Music is perpetual, and only the hearing is intermittent.

In that case, rock for me is like water. Pagnagsawa ka, lagyan mo iced tea/orange juice powder. Tubig parin, pero mas malasa. Ahaha.

mature in age kamo? ndi na maka-headbang eh, baka whiplash ang resulta.  :-D

i think sa mood yan eh, me time talaga na gusto mo ng mellow, jazzy. pag tumanda na moody na eh ehehehehe...
i think you're more of a mature musician if you appreciate both spectrum and you dont look down on any style  8-)

Are bands like radiohead or king crimson not that mature?

IMHO, the most mature form of music is when it transcends to the level of sublimity, when it goes beyond the borders of entertainment (check out oscar wilde's philosophical argument on art vs. entertainment), when it just becomes art and contributes to the value and realm of the art world itself.

If you want to hear sublime and serious kinds of this artform listen to classical/art/serious music - from bach to stravinsky to john cage.

"art for art's sake"

rock guitarist reaches a plateu when it becomes very difficult to find the time or energy it takes to get to the next level of guitar playing. his taste changes. he listens to other forms of music. he decides which direction he wants to go: jazz or classical...

(jazz) ...he starts to add chromaticism to his soloing/improvisation. he listens to bebop. he abandons the scalar/modal appraoch. he learns to solo based on the scale where the chord/chord progression can be found. his understanding of jazz becomes more in depth. he starts not to rely on the mechanics of chord scales. he struggles to learn chord-tone soloing. eventually, this approach becomes more natural to him as he develops develops good jazz rhythm (swing feel). he explores other chord voicings. then he starts to enjoy the sound of a good acoustic guitar and an electric guitar plugged directly to a clean amplifier. he develops a strong repertoire of standard tunes. he is now 70 years old.

(classical) OT na  :-D

guthrie govan is not jazz. just wanted to get that off my chest.

para sakin maturity sa music is yung pagiging masmalawak pa yung perspective mo into different genres....appreciating others and accepting their opinions....
