Just wondering ...
When you try out a Strat for the first time, what do you expect it to sound like?
I'm sure all of us have had our own unique experiences of plugging what LOOKS like a killer Strat - only to be disappointed when we do hear its inherent tones.
On the contrary, there are those rare moments when we come across what looks like a cheap copy, only to be shocked to find that it sounds close to the tones that we hear in our head.
Granted that we each have our own favorite guitar heroes, whose tones do you think best exemplifies 'THE' Strat tone that you do like - and subsequently use as your benchmark.
The first thing I listen for when testing a Strat is the in-between positions - what others call the 'quack'. I prefer to call it a 'boingk' coz that's what it sounds like. Some Strats have a good 1-3-5 tone, but don't sound good in the in-betweens and vice-versa.
What do you listen for?
My picks?
1. Larry Carlton - 'Song for Katie' (from the Sleepwalk album)
2. Wayne Krantz - first cut (forgot the title) from the 'Long to be Loose' album
3. Robben Ford - 'Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues' (Talk To Your Daughter)
4. Jeff Beck - 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' (Wired) I could say this is one of my favorite Strat tones coz he pretty much switches to all positions throughout the song and gets killer tones all the say
