reviving my old drum kit
« on: December 01, 2009, 05:02:15 AM »
Hi guys,

im new here.  :-) my passion for drumming has been revived because of the Rock Band Heroes game in PS3... hehehehe.

i have an old Yamaha DP series with a Sabian B8 cymbal set. it goes waaaay back late 90's. the heads are kinda worn out already. i was wondering if you guys could give me pieces of advise as to what replacement heads i should get. prices and shops to get them would be highly appreciated too. im in the south area (las pinas).

paadvise nadin please prices and where to get mga hardwares like drumrack, boom stands, throne, bass drum pedal...etc. i think i want to do a setup na may rack. any advise on price and places to get a gibraltar rack system?

also, i was wondering if mabebenta pa kaya ito. magkano kaya going price? im thinking of getting a pearl forum or vision series if budget would allow. hehe.  :-D

or perhaps a tama kit?? a superstar efx or ung efx hyperdrive...what do you think guys?

sorry for the many questions but i've been out of the drumming world for quite long, 7 years na ata... hehe.

Thanks in advance.  :-D

hi bro, riff here.. change your heads lang man ok na yun! if it's for home use ok na yun.. pero if you're more after sound, go for the pearl vision kesa pearl forum.. remo heads is most accessible kung south area maraming JB Music sa Southmall/ATC, pati kay vincher sa paranaque meron sa drum shop manila.. pearl/gibraltar accessories and zildjian cymbals are available din sa mga JB music stores as well.. as for drum racks.. meron gibraltar rack sa JB Music around 20K+ ata.. meron din perfect pitch sa southmall - sabian cymbals and yamaha hardware meron sila..

as for TAMA drums, meron audiophile sa festi, pati paiste cymbals and TAMA / Premier accessories.. better go for EFX Hyperdrive kasi 6PC na tska maganda finish niya though medyo may kamahalan compared to the usual wrapped sets.. for other accessories, merong stagg cymbals and mapex equipment sa hi-fi lounge (4th floor near gameworx)

Hi sir Riff,

Thanks for the response.  :-)

im planning sana for a better kit than what i have... tipong 4 toms, 3 floor toms, 6pc cymbals na kit. hehehehehe. i want to expand my equipment. but if thats too pricey, then upgrade ko nalang ung trusty yamaha ko. by the way, may alam kayo where nakakabili ng mga additional tom toms and floor toms?

would you know sir how much ung Tama EFX Hyperdrive?

ung remo heads, remo is the brand sir right? any particular remo head you can recommend? also, mga magkano kaya sir? hehehehe... mejo i need a major update on parts brands and names... hehehehehe.

what about ung head for the snare and bass drum sir?

Again, thank you very much sir. highly appreciated po.  :-D

think of it this way, bili tayo ng bili ng mura kasi mabilis masira at medyo pangit yung tunog, or gastos tayo ng mahal para sa magandang tunog na maglalast ng sooooooobrang tagal.  i'd go for the latter.  :-)

as for the setup you're looking at doing.. monster set ata bubuohin mo.. hehe.. marami naman music stores na mag-cater sa additional parts and accessories na hanap mo though IT IS PRICEY TALAGA... take for example yung Tama EFX Hyperdrive, superstars come in 6 pc setups max (ung kay wireme 7 piece pero diyos kasi yun haha!) anyways, you can have special orders naman done for addtl toms para mabuo ung ideal setup mo.. it would depend din on the size configurations na hanap mo at kung ano meron sa particular brand na kukuhanan mo.. for the price it's better to ask sir barabbas regarding that kasi last time i've inquired regarding the price less than 70K for the 6PC set ang quote niya..

regarding the skins.. REMO in particular, yup yun ung brand niya.. maganda yung pinstripes gaya nga ng sabi ni omnicloud or depende din talaga sa sound na hanap mo..i myself prefer clear emperors over my toms for example.. sa bass drum, i prefer PS3 (powerstroke 3) tapos sa snare varied eh.. i have remo Emperor-X heads on my metal snares, fiberskyn3 on my other wood snares and the ever trusted coated ambassador for my usual "go to" gig snare..

tambay ka lang palagi sa philmusic, watch youtube, ask around fellow musicians and just enjoy learning and playing music.. eventually you'll get the beat your looking for so to speak.. cheers!

hi omnicloud and riff,

thanks for the valuable inputs you all have given me. very much appreciated indeed. its kinda hard regaining footing after several years of absence. with philmusic and guys like you, i thinks its gonna be easier.  :-)

hooomayyygaaddd!!! i was looking for a price range of 30-50k lang.... 70k pala ung 6pc tama hyperdrive kit?! erase erase... hehehehe.

upgrade nalang gamit muna... hehehe. heads muna siguro. and probably a cymbal here or two. i'll stick muna with the b8 or b8 pro series siguro since home use lang naman. hehehehe  :-D saka na ung mga AAX... hehehe

by the way, nakakabili ba sir ng mga separate rack and floor toms? if so, what brand can you recommend and magkakano po? hehe. dagdag nalang ako toms kahit not necessarily yamaha din ang brand basta nice and affordable. hehe.  :-D

thanks po mga sir.  :-D

wag mo na revive... HAHAAH

then ung 30k?

then ur ready to go

separate ang batter and reso heads kapag binili.. if ever gusto mo mag-upgrade, nandyan ang lazer or JB music if need mo toms or drum rack kahit diff brand sa set mo.. as for cymbals.. ok na din ung B8 set! if your really keen and matiyaga at the same time, tambay ka lang sa classifieds for sure sobra pa ung 50K mo para makabuo ng monster set.. monster set ko nabuo ko kakatambay sa classifieds less than a year kalahati na halos buo ko.. cheers!

SKINS..
TOMS = Use Remo Encore and Lazer cheap-o head for the reso side.
Snare = Use evans or Remo Ambassador and Lazer Cheap-O head for the reso side. (If you want a cracking sound, use a Remo for the reso side)
Kick = Use Remo PowerStroke 3 and Lazer Cheap-o head for the reso (then get a CD and cut a hole on the reso).

Hardware = Go Gibraltar brands for the stands, throne, lugs, etc.

buy WD-40 to give your kit a shinny wipe!  :-D

Sticks=buy the 6 pairs of Zildjian Sticks with a Free 10" ZHT Zildjian Splash. (While supply last ito dude..)

Lastly, ENJOY!!! :)

For Sale:
Zildjian Avedis MedThin 16" Crash = 5K
Zildjian ZHT 10" Splash = 2K BNew Gibraltar single pedal and Straight stand = 2K each  PM Me ty..

last time i checked, remo pinstripe batter head for 22" kick is P1,600, 12" remo pinstripe is P600+, remo powerstroke 3 for 14" snare is P800 (sale parin sila hanggang ngayon hehe) agree ako kay sir paeng, yung Lazer head for reso side kasi P160 lang ata, tapos Gibraltar Hardwares, it never fails haha
the corny stuff is what pays you :)

hi guys,

thank you for all the responses. helpful talaga sobra.  :-)

right now sir im still just browsing around. sa next week na ang GAS attack!! hehehehehe.  :-D

just a couple of questions lang po...

would it make a difference kung the batter is remo tapos lazer ung reso vs. kung remo both heads? if the difference is negligible, then ok ung remo sa batter then lazer on the reso... laking tipid nga naman. hehe

also, is there a head for the bass drum which would allow me not to use internal muffling anymore?

also, meron ba mga cheap but good na drum rack? im trying to find a good alternative for the gibraltar rack which costs 20k... hehehe.  :-D

again, thanks guys!  :-D

it makes a huge difference in sound comparing lazer to remo resonants.. sabi nga ni paeng, if you want it crisp and tight, go for remo on both ends!

as for the bass drum head, powerstroke 3 heads have an internal ring already para di na masyado kailangan mag-kabit ng pang-muffle.. boomy pa ang sound!

as for drum racks, meron sa classifieds ngayon going for 8.5K neg.. meron din si homer aka dreamtheaterfan66f na Gibraltar rack with side bars and clamps packaged at 19K! (sulit!)  tambay ka lang philmusic.. naka-score ako ng Gibraltar rack, a month after nakakuha ako ng Pearl ICON rack sa classifieds!

hope we've helped you out! cheers!

change the heads then invest on hi-end cymbals and snare... pati pala pedal. =) welcome back to drumming.

Hi guys,

oo nga sir mondi, sarap tumugtog ulit. eto talaga first passion ko... hehehehe.  :-D

a little update lang... retuned my drums after countless hours of studying via online materials. last na natono to was years back. back then, limited palang resources... konting turo ng mga friends and hinge hinge ng advice sa mga instructors sa yamaha.

started with the snare... used the old heads muna. WOW!! what a difference. the sound now is very clean. just the way i wanted it... it used to sound "trashy". ngayon ang linis. hehehe.  :-D

im off to JB to grab me some new heads.  :-D

thanks for all the help guys.  :-D
