Gypsy Jazz
« on: May 27, 2006, 08:11:30 PM »
I've been into Gypsy Jazz just now. Sarap pala netong pakinggan.

Django inspired Andreas Oberg...

Eto pa isa, si Stochelo Rosenberg naman. Galing! :D

Napakalawak din talaga ng jazz music... :D

Any recommendations from you guys BTW? :D

Man, that Andreas guy is pretty wild! Definitely a notch above the trad gypsy style ... He kinda reminds me of Benson when he starts playing with reckless abandon ..

Gypsy, you say? Do check out Bireli Lagrene ... he's got a lot of clips there as well - some of them even with McLaughlin (another favorite)

For quite some time, Bireli was touted as the heir to Django's throne ..

Bireli is just too awesome! What an amazing talent, a virtuoso at such a young age. Of most players on the scene, his playing conveys the true "gypsie" free spirit.

If you're into that stuff, you may want to look for recordings by Elek Bacsik.  He recorded stuff with violinist Stephane Grappelli.  It was my introduction to Gypsy jazz when I was 15 and thought the world of rock guitar.  My perception of the instrument changed because of that 33 rpm recording from a live set in France.

I could also recommend the soundtrack to Woody Allen's The Sweet and Lowdown.  It features the awesomeness that is Howard Alden.  Hell, go ahead and check out the movie itself.  It's about a really cocky jazz guitarist from the turn of the century.  He thinks he's the best out there, but wouldn't ever want to be in the same room as Django when he's performing.

Not exactly a gypsy, but you can also check out the recordings of mandolinist David Grisman. Iba yung trip niya, he's into fusing bluegrass and jazz but the results sound similar to the french "Le Jazz Hot" recordings of Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grapelli. Grisman is still alive today so you can google him up or surf for his recordings.

Grisman calls his bluegrass-jazz fusion "dawg" music, so his website is www.dawgnet.com

Been listening to him a lot lately. I find him very aggressive (musically speaking) sometimes, though. Great player and muso nonetheless.

Andreas Oberg is my absolute favorite contemporary Jazz player on the international scene.

Joscho Stephan is also a beast:

thank you sir.  :-)
