Below is a picture of my red PAF pro's installed on my custom Elegee guitar. I got it through musiciansfriend dot com. In my opinion, the PAF pro is the best reference pickup out there because of its transparency. If you look at the tone guide in the dimarzio website, it's well balanced tonally, clean sounding yet loud enough. So the overall tone will be influenced by the different types of wood used and how your guitar was constructed. Be it bolt-on, neck-thru, etc.
This guitar is leaning towards the brighter sounding side of the tonal spectrum because of the flamed maple top and fretboard, ash body and bolt-on construction. But, it's still warmer than a strat. And the best thing about dimarzio's, they have "solution" pickups to compensate for it if needed.
Dimarzio's rule! I'm currently using FRED as well. I have used the Tone Zone, Humbucker from Hell and HS-2. They all are great and served their purpose. I simply opt for transparency nowadays.
