1---2---3---4 quarter

1-&-2-&-3-&-4 eighth

1e&a2e&a3e&a4 sixteenth

sinanay ko muna yung quarter then yung eighth then yung sixteenth!

tapos pwede na mag 32nd notes!

Hi Hat Shuffle and one hand 16 notes...
« Reply #33 on: March 20, 2007, 04:07:57 PM »

i hope i posted it on the right forum... anyway:

i asked a bassist friend  how you practice drills for hi hat shuffles (just like the hi hat thing on Lenny Kravitz's "It ain't over Til its over") ... and he told me: you hit a closed hi hat with the body of the stick, and as you raise the stick, you hit the tip of the stick with the hi-hat.

agree or disagree? how do you practice this since i noticed my progress and my cousin's is sooo slow that i begin to doubt whether it is right.

this technique is a pre cursor to one hand sixteen notes right? ... post your thought on this.

thanks :)

well...you may or may not.

it depends if you want to accent the downbeats and "&'s".

it'll help to accent too if you're playing faster.

I think that was explained in detail during mini-eb 3.

Hehe.

Mahirap talaga sa una yun dude, and you have to start real slow.

as for the 16 note... ano pagkaiba nya with the 2 hand sixteen note?

thanks for the link... i guess that's what i needed to know about the moller technique...

as for the 1 hand vs. 2 hand 16 beat... IMO, its dynamics. i disagree with that drummer who told me na walang pagkaiba except daw "laos" na yung 2 hand... in my mind i said "wow, para palang pop song ang technique, nagiging laos"

You can also check out Steve Smith's instructional DVD.  By far, I think he has the most detailed explanation and demonstration of the Moeller technique caught on video.

And for Modern Drummer magazine freaks like me, review the March 2002 issue and check out the feature, "The Moeller Stroke Revealed!"  Great article by John Riley, plus lots of pictures, insights and practice ideas.

FYI... The Moeller Stroke was named after Sanford A. Moeller (1879-1961), a drummer and educator during his time, and the man behind this concept and technique.

OT...

In my humble opinion, I don't think it depends on the genre or musical style...  Nasa drummer din yan.  8-)

Edi hindi pala pwede gamitin yung moeller technique pang 16ths? kasi tatlong strokes yung napproduce nya bali triplets ba yun? So pano dapat ang technique pag 16ths sa one hand?

Do the second stroke (tap) twice.  So that would be 4 notes: 1-2-3-4 = downstroke-tap-tap-up... Repeat the cycle to play straight-ahead 16th note groove.

The examples shown by Tony Royster Jr. and Steve Smith are exercises, and also in a way an aid in order for us to understand the motion and mechanics of the Moeller stroke.  It's up to us kung pano na rin natin idi-diskarte and iwo-work out sa playing natin.

+1

the stroke can also be used for pull out accents, 2 strokes, etc. ung triplet pattern lang ay para maemphasize ung 3 motions happening.
