re-considering filpino music culture
« on: August 07, 2006, 08:05:51 AM »
music in the philippines becomes a melting pot of culture from southeast asian neighbors to western... but on top of it all we have our own ethno-music styles...like that of mindanao and cordilleras... what is your point on revitalizing our tribal-ethno music and contemporizing it in a justifiable way to become acceptable in our genration of listeners?

well kasi i have heard of bands like pinikpikan and music of grace nono and stuff... i just think they create a pinoy music genre that could be considered pinoy and rock.. i don't know...opinions??!!!   :D

Nung college student pa ako sa Baguio may naisipan akong concept na Igorot Tribal Death Metal. Bale incorporated ang indigenous instruments ng Cordillera within a Death Metal framework, at saka dapat yung bokalista pag sumigaw parang tunog ng baboy na kinakatay para maging tunog authentic. Sadly, hanggang concept lang siya.  :(

Hahaha but here's the thing: Para mas maging authentic ay dapat naka-tribal costume din sila tuwing performance at dapat may kakatayin silang native na baboy sa stage at iaaalay sa mga anito.

Sepultura did something similar in "Roots".  Berimbaus plus nu metal on the rise...

i think with more daring and experimental new music, kelangan mas magaling ang musicians at creativity ng songwriting. pwede maging maganda ung concept of something new. metal but ethnic, the way i see it, kahit anong fusion ang gawin mo, kung magaling ung musician, papakinggan ng tao. if the musician isnt that good, maybe the peoples attention will just get caught the first time they listen to it because its differnt. but i think the appeal will always remain on the music, not the instruments. pero cool ata ung idea mo! why dont u try recording a sample song or 2 to see how it will really sound hehe. ung fruityloops ata pwede gumawa ng ethnic instruments etc. pero pano ung gitara? distortion?
