f you encounter a hard disc problem every time you power up your computer, you may have software corruption on the hard drive.
The first thing you should do is run ScanDisk. You can find it in the System Tools directory under the Accessories directory.
If Scandisk is unable to correct the problem, or else it runs, and you still encounter errors afterwards, then you might want to consider doing a System Restore (provided you have Win XP). If you do, then go to the same System Tools, and you'll find System Restore. Choose to restore your computer to an earlier date from one of the restore points listed on the calendar. Try to take it back to a time when you know it was working fine.
If after you do a System Restore and your computer is still behaving badly, then I'd contemplate backing up all pertinent data on your computer and then re-install the operating system, meaning you wipe your hard drive completely clean, format it, and then put everything back on. This is typically done with a Recovery Disk (or Disks) that came with your computer.
Lastly, if you re-install the o/s, and you still have problems, it's time to check into getting a new hard drive.
These would be the steps I'd take if you were a client of mine and I was sitting in front of your computer attempting to diagnose the problem.
Hope it helps! Good luck!
