There is an article on bass traps and how 4 inch foam or glass fiber or rockwool will not work as bass trap.  Go to my facebook page, www. facebook/tracksacoustics/studios.  Best solution is to place your speakers about a meter away from the walls or corners so that the low frequencies are not pronounced as much.  Put your monitor speakers as close to your mix position (your ears) as possible so you get more direct sound from the speakers and not the room's resonances and reflections.  Hope this helps.

Interesting bit of info there, Mike. In one of the older issues of Electronic Musician, there was an article on bass traps that used rigid fiberglass as a backing in some of their bass trap designs. Granted that there was an airspace in some of the designs, I think the EM article was intended more for lo-mid/mid/hi-mid bass control.

Yes.  Just for simple math purposes.  To trap 60 hz., divide the speed of sound (1133 ft./sec.) by the frequency, thus you need 18.88 feet to absorb 60 hz.  If we use quarter waves, that at least would be 4.72 feet to absorb that frequency.  That 56.64 inches!  Then, you use bass absorbers with a thickness of 4 inches?  Panel absorbers using pliable materials like plywood or wood would be the better alternative to trap low frequencies.  You are now threading into the Helmholtz resonator territory.  Or as how Tom Hidley, Philip Newell, Sam Toyoshima and other top caliber studio designers would do bass traps, use a lot of real estate with hanging baffles and fuzz materials.

How about membrane and limp mass absorbers?

Thanks for info. What I ordered (quite cheaply from here ) (and have just arrived) are 4 panels of 50cm x 50cm acoustic (egg-box) foam, and 2 x corner bass traps (foam) measuring 30cm X 30cm X 60cm. I haven't put any of it up yet. Would you suggest NOT using the egg-box panels and just getting loads more bass traps, then? Are foam bass traps okay? (Becuase of the layout of the room (shelving etc.), I don't really have the room to put huge fibreglass bass traps on the walls, so any ideas on small-ish / effective bass traps is very welcome).
