The VLZ is of a higher standard than the CFX/DFX series.  The VLZ has and still is the benchmark of most compact mixers manufacturers.  That is why evn though Mackie came out with the ONYX Series (which features their new studio grade pre-amps), they did not discontinue the VLZ simply because the VLZ owns its place in the market.  The CFX/DFX was primarily developed for the small entry to mid-market sound reinforcement market.  as you would notice, it does not have fetures associated with recording such as direct outs, few AUX sends, etc...

The heirarchy is ONYX 80 Series/ ONYX 40 Series/ ONYX Compact Mixers/ VLZ/ CFX/ DFX

If your purpose is recording, at the end of the day, one of your primary considerations would be sound which is highly influenced by the Mic Preamp.  Before you even consider price, try to have a "listen" coz the difference in sound quality might just be worth the difference in price. 

The ONYX Compact mixers are the new line that has an optional FIREWIRE Card to connect directly to your PC/MAC/ Laptop.
