Well I dont do that...aside from the fact that all manuals sample setting are like it. Seems to be beating an old dogs standard but... I'm jerked by some know it all tech saying that my config is wrong(or just they are confused), but when asking them why..they dont give an intelligent answer...sagot nila "basta ganun". Anyway wanted to know your insights on this before I gave my rationale to my unusual input groupings. Thanks in advance, I hope it will be a healthy discussion.  :-D

interesting topic. . ., I also have this question on my mind, "bakit nga ba nauuna ang bass and drum inputs sa mixer?!?" pero ganun din ako mag-input, ginaya ako ang 1/3octave na 31band GEQ, from low frequencies to high frequencies ang arrangement ng inputs ko sa board namin. . .

In mixing (but this is not a must, I must warn you), you normally start with the foundation of the song.  And that normally would bass and kick.  The reason why input ! and 2 are those.  Then snare.  then toms, oh, etc.  Although this is not really how things are to be done, to make things easy, this kind of arrangement is followed.  Also, the edge of a tape, say 24 track tape, normally, would, a lot of times, be bent or damaged, which results to loss of high frequency.  And since bass does not need any HFs, that is where it is most logical to put the bass track.  This was how it was during the analog days.  Now that these things do not happen anymore in the age of digital, any input position can be used and it does not matter.  It is just what you are used to in recording or mixing.  To date, I still follow the old assignment technique as I find it most logical and follows a step by step procedure.  In mixing, I always start putting up the vocals, wherever input they are assigned, process and eq, etc. them, and when finished or I am satisfied with how they sound, follow the step by step technique of putting up the faders of the bass, kick, etc.  To each his own.  There are no rules in mixing.  FWIW

  i do this too.

just an old trick when 'mic-ing' drums - if you mic a snare drum top and bottom, you need to invert the polarity of the bottom mic.

though there are other conventions, it is generally agreed that the kick drum goes into the first channel of the console

Mine is bass first followed by kick. It's like laying down a building... foundation first then the rest on top of that. The entire drum kit goes into their own aux bus too. This makes for easier level adjustments down the line when you're satisfied with the balance of the kit.
Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire
