Need help with rusted pickguard screw
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:26:43 PM »
i'm working on a guitar (need to change pickups on it) and one of the pickguard screws is so rusted and corroded that when i tried to screw it off, halos nabura yung "+" nung screw. normally this wouldn't be a problem kasi pickguard screws twist off easy but this one seems to be screwed in tight.

how do i take it off without breaking the screw or pickguard (medyo mahirap maghanap ng pickguard locally)?

all suggestions welcome. because i'm out of ideas. ayaw talaga pumihit nung screw.

Hmm.. Try heating the screw. Use a soldering iron o kaya yosi. Then tsaka mo gamitan ng screwdriver or kung kaya, long nose.

take extra caution, you might get impatient and pull it off from the body... you might ruin the wood threads

Baka walang pagkakapitan.

thats the thing. beveled yung screw holes nung pickguard so countersunk yung screw heads. grips have nothing to grip on.

You'll be able to drill through it and use a new screw.

Diagonal angle with a hammer, dahan dahan mong pukpukin yung head counterclockwise.

I think its a job for Micsis na... You might scratch the pickguard if you try the pukpok method, or break it...

although if you follow arkeetar's directions, it will work, but go slow.....

kung nakalitaw yung head you could take a lagaring bakal and slowy saw a bit para magkasya ang - head na screw driver..

pwede din try some mighty bond or epoxy and glue the screwdriver or some metal thing to the busted screw head..para lang may makapitan yung pliers para ikotin yung dead screw..

it may work or it may not..depende gaano kasikip yung dead screw...

do this one man..the one said by juan_alderete  is the one closest on removing counter sunk screws, but in your part it would be quite risky because the part where you are removing it is on wood and drilling might damage the pickguard..ginagawa lang ang ganyang technique kapag bakal ang pagtataganggalan mo.. here's a 50/50 chance or mostly like a 100% chance to remove it, if you have a really nice grip.. since broke na ang + ng screw mo..(if you can) kuha ka ng cutter then yung nabilog na part ng screw head mo eh tsagain mong kutkutin or guhitan ng guhitan yung gilid nun para makagawa kang part na kakapitan ulit ng screw driver tapos yung screw driver na gagamitin mo kundi medyo oversize ng konti sa ginamit mo eh.. FLAT screw driver(recommended) na medyo malaki sa philip na nagamit mo.. been doing this all the time on my work.. so this is up to you

but if risk breaker ka.. yun nga.. drill ka ng pabilog ng pabilog on the head of your countersunk screw hanggang sa masira mo yung head nung countersunk.. then remove your pickguard.. then vice-grip mo yung screw palabas ng body ng wood  :-D

bring it to arie, he has the tools to remove it. i had the exact same experience before and it only tool him less than 10 seconds to remove it without damaging the wood/guitar

This.... small flat head screwdriver lang yan. Or drill the screw head until matangal yung buong ulo. Remove the other screws as well in a normal matter, pag nagal mo ng pickguard matitira yang broken screw na may naka angat na konting katawan. Then vice grip mo na lang natirang screw.
I have stated that there are more bad sounding suhrs then there are good ones.

Get a new guitar for the new pickups.

Seriously, if all else fails, eto pwedeng gawin..... medyo halong mcguyver at rambo nga lang.. Heat mo yung screw head with a soldering iron until the plastic pickguard starts to "melt" of soften.. Pag mejo malambot at flexible na siya, lift the pickguard hanggang lumusot yung screw head.. Pag lumamig yung pickguard, andun pa rin naman yung countersunck hole niya ne medjo maayos pa rin.. then from there, tanggalin mo nalang yung screw with a pair of pliers. Done it before and it worked.

i'll try this later. medyo puyat nako kagabi e but i did manage twist and flex the guard enough for me to mount the pickups and finish the work. yun lang, nabobother ako leaving something that small unfixed and not knowing what to do with it. OC tendencies lang.

bring it to arie, he has the tools to remove it. i had the exact same experience before and it only tool him less than 10 seconds to remove it without damaging the wood/guitar
ito last resort ko.

fixed it. tapped a flat head scree driver a few taps with a hammer directly on top of the scree head and i guess i got lucky because it left an indent deep enough for the flat head to turn the screw

Mabuti naayos na. For future referrence: pinapatungan ko ng manipis na goma yung screwhead (yung goma na ginagamit pang "tirador") tapos saka ko iikot using a screwdriver, yung goma will act as a grip para maluwagan yung screw.  :-D

So, is the screwhole drill-pressed or was the screw directly forced through the wood?

i have no idea. it might have been the first time anyone has taken off the pickguard kasi all the screws were still tight but most of them had rusted heads.

yung control panel screws, on the other hand, may 2 na were very loose na and i could tell the pots had been replaced.
