Dumble Tone Fans
« on: March 21, 2014, 03:27:47 PM »
I have recently become in love with the Dumble tone cause of Robben Ford's latest album. It's just creamy and chimey at the same time. Can't explain it, it has a nice balance of smoothness that really expressive and horn-like.

Anyone else into this tone?

Care to share the best way to get the tone without the actual unobtanium Dumble amp?

I love it too!  :)

Many pedals are available to get you close to it tonewise but not the feel.

cranked power amp pushing the speaker to compression, while using minimal pre-amp distortion.  small tube amp combos that have good headroom (typical of 6v6 or 6l6 tubes) with their volume cranked do this well.  and you don't have to break the bank to do this too... a VHT Special 6 is relatively cheap, and can do this.

i was about to say wampler euphoria myself (set to smooth mode) because i personally use it too.  but curiousdcat is correct to say that tone-wise, you can get close with some pedals, but you cant have the same feel of power amp clipping and speaker compression.

also consider that these pros play very loud in their venues, and the loud volume creates feedback that definitely affects the tone and sustain.  this is something that can never be done in low volume.

My jaw just dropped at the sight of that amp! Glaswerks! How does it sound? Can it nail RF tones?
I can smell the mojo on that Tele! What model is it?

Are you saying a TS pedal will be enough to get to dumble heaven through a fender amp?
What's your most accurate formula to get there thru a fender amp?

Whats that pedal with no label?
Also, dang!

Agree there! I have a princeton reverb ri, it gets close with an old ts808, but there is something missing. You must be right, the power amp distorting and the speakers as well. The dynamics is just not there.

Pag walang dumble, prefer ni rf twin reverb.
May bagong rig rundown din s'ya, balik zendrive, naka timeline. Hehe mapanuod at mapakinggan ko lang ng live ok na ko

Are you saying a TS pedal will be enough to get to dumble heaven through a fender amp? To my surprise, RF's tone came out. lol.
What's your most accurate formula to get there thru a fender amp? I don't have one..

Whats that pedal with no label? It's an Andy Fuchs Prototype Plushdrive. Mine is prototype #2.. Scott Lerner has #1.
Also, dang!Thanks!

When it comes to dumble tones, I like Robben Ford and Larry Carlton. Pero Robben has that really unique tone na pag maririnig mo, malalaman mong siya.  :)

si carlton mas smooth, si robben mula sa rhythm playing at string attack lupet ng dynamics.

I loved my old Zendrive and Zendrive 2 but they weren't versatile enough for my rig so I sold them. I also had a Custom Tones Ethos Overdrive Amp and a Providence Stampede OD. Both pedals sounded great. The Tanabe Dumkudo is awesome. Really clear. It captures the Dumble tone more than the Zendrive does, in my opinion.

Just a side note on RF tone, an important formula is his pickups.  Notice that there is rarely ever a discussion on his pickups which shows how ignorant we are about tone.   I don't usually endorse pickups as important as the guitar and amp but in this case it does matter for the reason that during clinics, RF and tech say good things about the product and nothing else.  He uses Jim Rolphs.  I am a VERY Jim Rolph user for the past three years.

LOVE that Robben Ford sound.  Always so authoritative and commanding.  He really digs into the notes.  Once you get close to the tone I think that'll put it over the top in terms of feel.

RF has Rolphs in his Sakashta. I think most of his guitars have stock pu's. Though i'm not really sure.. lol.

There's this Larry Carlton concert I saw on youtube having RF as his guest. Kahit nag ri-rhythm lang na si RF eh litaw na litaw yung guitar nya kesa sa solo ni LC. Kakaiba yung tone niya. Trebly pero not necessarily shrill or ice-picky.
